Ed. critica P. Everett - Riduzione per canto e pianoforte di A. Frigé. Par VIVALDI ANTONIO. This volume presents the vocal score of Vivaldi's Stabat Mater RV 621 for alto, strings and continuo, based on the critical edition by Paul Everett. Composed for the church of Santa Maria della Pace in Brescia, it was performed, for the first time, on 8 March 1712, for the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary celebration. It is considered as one of the most inspired and celebrated Vivaldian works. Together with the Gloria RV 589 and the Quattro stagioni, it dates from a juvenile period. / Niveau : Intermédiaire / Répertoire / Chant et Piano

The present reduction derives from the critical edition of the score published in this catalog in 2002 (PR 1362). Although it is not possible to establish with certainty the time and the occasion for which it was composed - between the end of 1716 and beginning of 1717 - the Gloria RV 589 is the best known among the works Vivaldi wrote on this subject, enough to be considered the Gloria by Vivaldi. The critical edition is based on the only source available, the autograph full score now kept at the National University Library of Turin, Codex Giordano 32. It restores the famous Vivaldi text based on the revised criteria by the Committee of the Critical Edition. The volume includes a synthetic introduction of the historical context and a choice of the critical Notes to the musical text. / Voix Et Piano

Ed. critica A. Borin - A. Moccia - Riduzione per canto e pianoforte. Par VIVALDI ANTONIO. With Il Teuzzone, RV 736, the collected edition of operas by Antonio Vivaldi gains a new volume that brings to completion the pair of operas written by the ?Red Priest? for Mantua. Premiered during the last days of 1718, the opera preceded by a few months the production of Tito Manlio, RV 738 (PR 1411). This edition of Teuzzone, the first in modern times, is based on the two complete sources to have survived: a copy originating from the composer?s own archive (Biblioteca Nazionale Universitaria di Torino, Raccolta Mauro Foà 33) and the one today housed in Berlin (Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin ? Preussischer Kulturbesitz, Musikabteilung, N. Mus, ms. 125), which was made for the Mantuan production. Additionally, numerous secondary sources have been collated. An appendix to the volume contains the musical materials discarded by Vivaldi during the period preceding the opera?s premiere. The supporting texts for the edition report on new findings that have emerged from archival and documentary research. It has been established, for instance, that the aria Tu, mio vezzoso (I.03) is a borrowing from Alessandro Severo by Antonio Lotti, while the aria Tornerò, pupille belle (II.02) is a reworking of Nelle mie selve natie, an aria in Scanderbeg, RV 732. These examples reveal the pasticcio-like nature of this Vivaldi opera. In the section concerned with the description of the sources, which includes a meticulous codicological examination of the source in Turin, a bold attempt has been made to reconstruct the phases that the composition of Vivaldi?s opera underwent, an operation that sheds light on the inner workings of Vivaldi?s atelier. In addition, the close relationship of this score to a work with the same title staged in Turin with music by G. Casanova and A. S. Fiorè is analysed./ Répertoire / Chant et Piano

The present reduction derives from the critical edition of the score, just published in this catalog. La Griselda, was composed and performed in Venice, in the spring of 1735, for the occasion of the Ascensiontide fair (Sensa). The task of adapting the libretto by Apostolo Zeno to the particular exigencies of the production was assigned to a young writer of comedies attached to the company led by Giuseppe Imer: Carlo Goldoni. The latter immortalized in his Mémoires his meeting with Vivaldi and the composer's inseparable prima donna, the contralto Anna Giraud, confessing to having been forced against his will to 'assassinate? Zeno's drama at the composer's whim. La Griselda was favourably received by the audience at the San Samuele theatre, remained the sole opera by Vivaldi to be staged at a theatre owned by the powerful Grimani family. The present edition includes a synthetic introduction of the historical context, the description of the main source employed and a choice of the critical Notes to the musical text. / Voix Et Piano

Tito Manlio was performed for the fi rst time in Mantua as second work of the Carnival season of winter 1719. Vivaldi set the libretto of La fi da ninfa, a dramma per musica in three acts by Scipione Maffei, with a view to its use for the inauguration of the new theatre of the Accademia Filarmonica of Verona, which took place on 6 January 1732, during the Carnival season, elaborate stage sets being provided by Francesco Bibbiena. The critical edition is based on the collation of the two complete manuscripts of the work kept at the National University Library of Turin: the Vivaldi's autograph and a copy realized by fi ve copyists under the direct control of the composer. / Voix Et Piano

The surviving second and third acts of Catone in Utica, one of Metastasio's most dramatic libretti, premiered in Verona in the spring of 1737 in a setting by Vivaldi, contain some of his finest, most mature, and most original arias, and are published here for the first time. They evince a potential dramatic intensity that makes us regret all the more the loss of the first act. Only one aria of Act I can be definitely recovered from a surviving opera, but the rest has now also been successfully reconstructed by Alessandro Ciccolini, whose intimate knowledge of Vivaldi's working methods, combined with brilliant stylistic insight won universal acclaim for his work on Vivaldi's Motezuma and Ercole sul Termodoonte. Ciccolini has also composed cadenzas and da capo variations for all the arias, published here in an appendix.A complete recording under the direction of Alan Curtis is available from Naïve Records(OP30545).Press Quotes:'[For his completion,] Alessandro Ciccolini, who, mindful that Vivaldi frequently adapted vocal music for his instrumental works and vice versa, has composed the missing passages using themes from the concertos as his starting point.

This volume presents the vocal score of Vivaldi's Magnificat RV 610/611 for soloists, choir, winds, strings and continuo, based on the critical edition by Michael Talbot. Probably meant for a performance at the Pietà, Vivaldi, after its first 1715 version, returned on it in two occasions at least: at the end of the 1720s and of the 1730s. The Magnificat, in its time, was considered as Vivaldi's most celebrated piece. / Niveau : Intermédiaire / Répertoire / Chant et Piano

Ed. critica di M. Talbot - Riduzione per canto e pianoforte di A. Frigé. Par VIVALDI ANTONIO. The present volume contains all three settings by Vivaldi of the Marian antiphon Salve Regina that have come down to us. All three are for solo voice: soprano in the case of RV 617, and contralto in that of RV 616 and RV 618. The last two settings are scored for two instrumental cori and introduce woodwind instruments, respectively a flute and a pair of oboes, whereas the instrumentation of the first is confined to strings disposed in a single coro, although a solo violin is employed in three movements. RV 617, preserved in a non-autograph source in Brno, belongs to Vivaldi's first period of sacred music composition at the Pietà (1713-1717), while RV 616 and RV 618 are works of his maturity dating from the years around 1730. RV 617 is laid out in four movements, RV 616 and 618 in six movements. All three works are noteworthy for the tenderness of their expression and skilful writing for both the voice and the instruments. The Introduction and Critical Commentary for these vocal scores, prepared by Antonio Frigé, are closely based on those of the Critical Editions by Michael Talbot, published in 1998, 1990 and 1994. / Niveau : Intermédiaire / Classique / Répertoire / Chant et Piano

The present reduction derives from the critical edition of the full score published in this catalog in 2002 (PR 1367). The Beatus vir in C major RV 597 is composed on Psalm 111, is a prominent member of a group of around 13 sacred vocal works by Vivaldi composed in a period running from the second half of the 1720s into the early 1730s even if it is not possible to establish their right destination. The critical edition is based on the only source available, the original autograph manuscript now kept at the National University Library of Turin Foà 40, cc. 155-185 - it restores the text starting from the revised criteria by the Committee of the Critical Edition.
