Carl Nielsen's Fantasy Pieces for Oboe and Piano were composed in 1889/90. Having just gained a position as a violinist in the Royal Danish Orchestra, Nielsen had already experienced success with his String Suite op. 1 both as a composer and as a conductor. Several sketches and autographs bear witness to his intensive work on these contrasting pieces for oboe, which were to appear in 1890 as his Opus 2. The two movements, Romance and Humoreske, are dedicated to the oboist Olivo Krause who played in the royal orchestra. His beautiful tone and virtuosic technique probably played no small part in the fact that these miniatures by the 'young, talented composer? took the public and critics by storm at their first performance in March 1891. / Hautbois Et Piano

En novembre 1778, Mozart est à Mannheim où il ébauche un deuxième concerto pour hautbois en fa majeur un an après avoir achevé son premier, le concerto en ut majeur KV 314 datant de début 77, le seul qui hélas nous parviendra dans son intégralité. On ne sait rien de la genèse de ce concerto, ni de la raison pour laquelle le compositeur n'acheva que le tutti initial et le début du solo, mais il est fort probable qu'il soit lié à sa rencontre avec Friedrich Ramm comme en témoigne sa correspondance à son père datée du 4 décembre 1777 « un hauboïste qui joue fort bien et qui a un son très pur». Mozart composera pour lui le quatuor KV 370 en 1781. À l'opposé du hautbois, les sopranos disposent chez le compositeur d'un répertoire d'une richesse éblouissante avec souvent un traitement de la voix d'une virtuosité rappelant celle des instruments jouant dans le même registre. Il était donc très tentant de construire un concerto avec deux arias en fa majeur, le KV 538 « Ah se il ciel, begnine stelle » et le KV 638 « Ma que vi fece » sans le récitatif initial. Ces deux airs seront proposés ici avec la partie originale et une proposition légèrement ornementée pour un rendu plus purement instrumental. En guise de deuxième mouvement, j'ai utilisé l 'Andante pour flûte et orchestre KV 315, originellement en do majeur que j'ai baissé d'un ton pour une relation classique fa-si b,-fa. Pour le hautbois, c'est une nouvelle opportunité de se mouvoir dans cette musique à la magique pureté et la vitalité sans cesse renouvelée ! Yuri Maizels was born in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) in the former Soviet Union. After the conclusion of the Second World War, he was accepted at age 13 into the Naval Boarding Musical School in Leningrad (the school which had been organized in 1873 by Rimsky-Korsakov), to study the oboe. In 1964, he graduated from the College of Music with multiple degrees in oboe performance, oboe teaching, and conducting. Elegia is a small piece for Oboe and Piano accompaniment by Nino Rota . Really lyrical, its medium difficulty will enable intermediate players to execute it, for a recital or for a contest. This lovely work is quite slow, nostalgic at some points and ends up on a perfect harmony between the two instruments. Nino Rota (1911-1979) is an Italian composer and conductor, particularly known for his works on film music. The composer states that'the piece begins with a slowly falling scale of seven notes, thrown from one player to another, repeated nine times and embellished with ornamental flurries which outline a gradually evolving harmonic pattern. The repetitive nature of the music is like a peal of bells or some other kind of evocation. Eventually the music breaks out of this cyclic inevitability and heads into a faster dance-like material which in turn develops its own ritualistic recurrences.? These two extraordinary works of late Mozart, KV 594 and KV 608, were both composed to fulfill a commission for a memorial exhibit in Vienna, to be played in a 'mechanical clock organ.? The term 'fantasy? or 'fantasia? came to be affixed to these works later, and is more descriptive and less cumbersome than the term Mozart listed in his own catalogue, 'Ein Stüke für ein Orgelwerk in ein Uhr.? They are also variously titled 'Adagio und Allegro in f für ein Orgelwerk? and 'Allegro und Andante (Fantasie in f) für eine Orgelwaltze.?The first of these, composed between the monumental String Quintet in D and the Piano Concerto in Bb KV 595, is an A-B-A form, comprised of an f minor Adagio opening and closing, with a contrapuntal Allegro at its heart. KV 608 is more complicated, opening with an f minor section reminiscent of a French Overture, followed by a fugue in f minor, then an Andante aria, followed by a return to the opening and then a more complex version of the fugue.Despite the frustration that Mozart expressed (in a letter to Constanze) with the sound world of these mechanical devices, KV 594 and 608 are remarkable works which stand at an intersection, incorporating what he learned about counterpoint studying at the foot of Bach, while looking ahead to the emotional and harmonic poignancy of Schubert. / Quintette A Vent
