Brahms' first Piano
Concerto was the fruit of
a complex, protracted,
and extremely trying
creative process. Its
origin goes back to a
sonata in D minor for two
pianos conceived in
spring 1854. The impulse
for the creation of the
main subject was however
a shocking event:
According to Joseqph
Joachim, the theme
originated after hearing
about Schumanns suicide
attempt. A few months
earlier, Schumann had
revealed Brahms to the
musical world in his
essay New Paths. In this
article, Brahms is
extolled as the musician
who is called to give
expression to the feeling
of his times in an ideal
fashion. The unusually
rapid genesis of the
D-minor sonata and its
prevailingly dark,
monumental mood can be
interpreted as an
impassioned compositional
response to Schumann's
suicide attempt. However,
the year-long struggle to
arrive at the final form
of the work should
perhaps also be seen in
the context of the
resounding praise of
Schumann's prophetic
article. Brahms undoubtly
felt a growing inner
pressure to live up to
the expectations aroused
therein.Together with
Clara Schumann, Brahms
played the three so far
existing movements of the
sonata, but he was very
self-critical. He felt
that he had not been able
to realize the
monumentality he had
envisioned, and which
Clara Schumann felt, by
merely doubling the piano
sound. He soon decided to
transform the sonata into
a symphony (his first
orchestral project).
However, this idea did
not seem to fit his
vision either. Only in
spring 1855 did he strike
upon the definitive
solution: a piano
concerto. With Brahms as
soloist, this concerto
premiered in 1859, though
he initially had little
success. He wrote to
Joachim about one of the
first performances that
the concerto was a
brilliant and
unmistakable - failure.
This hardly surprised
Brahms, for he was
undoubtedly aware of the
newness of the work,
which surpassed the
expectations of the
audience. The work's
complex structure and
symphonic dimensions, the
solo part's rejection of
showy, elegant
brilliance, and the
uniquely Brahmsian
orchestral density it
maintains throughout; all
of these qualities
inevitably exasperated
audiences at first -
until they raised this
work to the ranks of the
most celebrated concertos
of all time. $7.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 3 to 4 weeks

originally as a work for

arrangement of
Dvořák’s
Suite in A Major for
flute and piano is based
on both the piano and
orchestra versions. It is
one in a series of
Stallman’s

by his happy and fruitful
stay in the “New

folk influences, both
American and Old World

in E≤ Major, the

ed originally as a work
for solo piano, the Suite
in A Major was composed
by Dvořák in 1894,
during his famous
two-year visit to the
United States. He wrote
the work in a mere ten
days, and a year later
made a full orchestration
of it. The Suite was
first performed in this
second version in 1910 in
Prague at the Rudolfinum.
Dvořák, who died
in 1904, never had a
chance to hear a
performance of this
stirring orchestral
realization.The Suite was
inspired by the
composer’s happy
and fruitful stay in the
“New Worldâ€,
especially by his
unforgettable summers
spent in the quiet
Czech-American village of
Spillville, Iowa—a
period that produced some
of his greatest works,
full of thematic
freshness, raw energy and
folk influences, both
American and Old World
Czech. The “New

in Eb Major, the Violin
Sonatina and this A Major

with his personal
impressions of the Wild
West’s fascinating
Indian and Afro-American
music, its God-fearing
and friendly people, its
vast open spaces and its
awe-inspiring natural
beauty.Several of the
Suite’s affecting
melodies find echoes in
these other, better known
compositions of this
American period. Wistful
themes abound in all five
movements, reflecting
Dvořák’s
transformative American
experience as it found
resonance in his own
emotions. Contrasting
with deeply felt,
contemplative passages
are
Dvořák’s
joyous and tempestuous
expressions, which open
the second, third and
final movements.This
arrangement for flute and
piano is based on both
the piano and orchestra
versions. It is one in a
series of my
“new†works
for flute by some of our
greatest composers and I
am delighted to add it to
the collection. I predict
that the A Major Suite
will become a popular
addition to our Romantic
recital repertoire, much

Sonatina.—Robert

tone poem on Roman
mythology, QUICKSILVER is
a 23-minute concerto for
Alto Saxophone and Wind
Ensemble by one of the
sax literature’s
most commissioned and
admired composers.Through
worded captions as well
as gorgeously expressive
tone painting, Movement 1
depicts the birth and
childhood pranks of
Mercury, Movement 2 shows
him escorting souls to
the gates of the
Underworld, and Movement
3 is a phantasmagoric
finale portraying Mercury
as messenger amid the
conflicts of other
mythological figures.
There are many YouTube
performances available,
both in the original
version with Wind
Ensemble, and with
Piano. In addition to
being another name for
the element mercury,
“quicksilverâ€
is used to describe
something that changes
quickly or is difficult
to contain. My concerto
of the same name was
inspired by the Roman god
Mercury, as well as the
mercurial nature of the
saxophone: unpredictable,
very lively, and
volatile. Mercury (known
as Hermes in Greek
mythology) is best known
for his winged shoes,
which allowed him to fly
swiftly as the messenger
of his fellow Olympians.
Mercury had other duties
too, including serving as
the god of merchants,
travelers, and
tricksters; he also
ushered souls of the
departed to the
Underworld.Quicksilver
tells three tales of the
Roman god. The first
movement (Antics of a
Newborn God) opens with
the birth of Mercury;
after he takes his first
steps, he toddles around,
gleefully looking for
mischief. He stumbles
across a herd of cows
that belong to his
brother Apollo; Mercury
slyly lets the cows out
of their pen before
toddling onward with his
mischief-making.In the
second movement (Guiding
Souls to the Underworld),
Pluto, god of the
Underworld, bids Mercury
to bring him fresh souls.
The movement begins with
death-knells tolling for
humans who are about to
die; Mercury picks up
these souls and leads
them down to the gates of
the Underworld.The third
and final movement
(Messenger of Olympus)
depicts Mercury as he is
busily running errands
for various gods and
goddesses. We first
encounter him mid-flight
as he dashes to earth to
find Aeneas, a Trojan
lieutenant who had been
run out of Troy by the
invading Greeks. Aeneas
is on a quest to find
land on which to
establish a new city that
would eventually become
Rome. While traveling, he
is distracted from his
quest when he meets the
beautiful queen Dido.
They live together for
many years before Mercury
intervenes; he chastises
Aeneas for giving up on
his quest and persuades
him to pick it up again.
As Aeneas mournfully
resumes his journey, we
hear Dido perish of a
broken heart. Mercury
then takes to the skies
to seek out Perseus, who
is preparing to kill
Medusa, the hideous
gorgon who has snakes for
hair and a gaze that
turns those who catch her
glance into stone.
Mercury advises Perseus
on how to slay Medusa and
lends Perseus his sword
to do the deed. We hear
Perseus victorious in the
beheading of Medusa,
after which Mercury takes
to the skies once more to
fly home to Olympus. $34.99 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 24 hours - In Stock

Birkmann,
Christoph. It only
became apparent a few
years ago that the text
of the soprano cantata
Falsche Welt, dir trau
ich nicht came from the
collection
Gott-geheiligten
Sabbaths-Zehnden by the
Leipzig theology student
and Bach pupil Christoph
Birkmann, printed in 1728
in Nuremberg. Birkmann
was probably therefore
the author of the text.
The cantata was written
for the 23rd Sunday after
Trinity, which fell on 24
November 1726 in the year
of its first performance.
As in other cantatas in
the first annual cycle,
Bach chose an
instrumental sinfonia as
the opening movement -
here the first movement
of the 1st Brandenburg
Concerto. The soprano
soloist has two
recitatives and two
arias, in which the
falsehood of the world is
juxtaposed with trust in
God. The cantata text is
rounded off with the
first verse of the
chorale In dich hab ich
gehoffet, scored for
four-part chorus, as is
usual with Bach. With the
use of two horns and
three oboes added to the
string ensemble, the
cantata has colorful and
varied orchestration.
