Complete Edition brings
together 21 very
different compositions
from various phases of
Schutz's compositional
output. The spectrum
ranges from a short,
two-part sacred concerto
to a six-part cyclical
psalm setting and
large-scale polychoral
concerto, from well-known
works such as the
Osterdialog to a
completely unknown
madrigalian composition,
full of emotion, to a
simple chorale setting. A
particular challenge was
posed by the ten works or
versions of works which
survive incomplete. Two
of these, the Christmas
concerto Ach Herr, du
Schopfer aller Ding SWV
450a and Ein Kind ist uns
geboren SWV 497, appear
here for the first time
in print. With both of
these it turned out that
it was possible to
reconstruct the missing
parts fully from
available material. For
the Ultima Verba Psalmi
23, Gutes und
Barmherzigkeit SWV 95 and
the two Nunc dimittis:
Herr, nun lassest du
deinen Diener SWV 432 and
433, the editor's
reconstructions are
presented, and likewise
with the chorale movement
In dich hab ich gehoffet,
Herr SWV 446. The
impressive Easter dialog
Weib, was weinest du SWV
443 is one of the works
which survives
incomplete. In order to
give an impression of how
the whole work might
actually have sounded in
the complete form as
planned by Schutz, the
Appendix to the volume
contains a reconstruction
of the four-part vocal
setting of the missing
final chorus, based on
the surviving figured
bass. The magnificent
Gesang der drei Manner im
feurigen Ofen (Song of
the three men in the
burning fiery furnace)
SWV 448 from the book of
the prophet Daniel, the
original source of which
is lost, is critically
discussed and published
with various
possibilities for
scoring. $350.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 2 to 3 weeks

Portrait In 2012 Nicola
Campogrande received a
rather singular
commission when a total
stranger asked him to
compose a musical
portrait of his fiancee.
The man knew exactly what
he wanted: a concerto for
piano and orchestra.
After some reflection,
Campogrande realised that
he would be able to paint
with music. It would
never be possible, of
course, to recognise the
shape of the woman's face
or the colour of her
hair, but the score could
evoke the way in which
she occupied space and
time, and the different
movements of the
composition would be like
the faces on a rotating
prism. Campogrande thus
accepted the commission
and the stranger sent him
a few photos of his
fiancee, spoke to him
about her and, finally,
introduced him to her.
This is how R (A portrait
for piano and orchestra)
was born, first performed
in April 2013 by Lilya
Zilberstein with the
Orchestra Verdi in Milan.
Subsequently, following
other performances and a
TV documentary, a number
of different pianists
asked Campogrande to
write a version for solo
piano. Hence Nudo
emerged, a piece that
would be very similar to
R, were it not for the
fact that, as the title
suggests, the pianist is
naked, without orchestral
clothing.Un portrait
musical En 2012, Nicola
Campogrande s'est vu
proposer une commission
fort singuliere ; un
parfait etranger lui
demandait de composer le
portrait musical de sa
compagne. L'homme savait
exactement ce qu'il
voulait : un concert pour
piano et orchestre. Apres
quelques hesitations,
Campogrande s'est rendu
compte qu'il pouvait se
servir de la musique
comme d'un pinceau. Bien
entendu, il ne serait
jamais possible de
reconnaitre la forme du
visage de la femme ou la
couleur de ses cheveux,
mais la partition
pourrait evoquer la facon
dont elle se deplacait
dans l'espace et dans le
temps, et les differents
mouvements de la piece
seraient comme les
figures d'un prisme en
rotation. Campogrande a
donc accepte la
commission ; l'etranger
lui a envoye des photos
de sa compagne, il lui a
parle d'elle, avant de
les faire se rencontrer
personnellement. Ainsi
est ne R (Un portrait
pour piano et orchestre),
interprete pour la
premiere fois en avril
2013 par Lilya
Zilberstein et
l'orchestre Verdi de
Milan. D'autres
executions ont suivi,
ainsi qu'un documentaire
televise, apres quoi
plusieurs pianistes ont
prie Campogrande d'ecrire
une version pour piano
seul. C'est ainsi que
Nudo a vu le jour : un <<
nu >> tres semblable au
premier portrait, si ce
n'est que le piano s'y
trouve, comme le suggere
le titre, depouille de
son vetement orchestral.
Ritrarre con la musica
Nel 2012 Nicola
Campogrande ha ricevuto
la piu singolare delle
commissioni, quando un
perfetto sconosciuto gli
ha chiesto di comporre il
ritratto musicale della
sua fidanzata. L'uomo
sapeva esattemente cio
che voleva: un concerto
per pianoforte e
orchestra. Dopo qualche
esitazione, Campogrande
si e reso conto di poter
dipingere con la musica;
certo, non sarebbe stato
possibile riconoscere la
forma del viso della
donna o il colore dei
suoi capelli, ma la
partitura avrebbe evocato
il modo nel quale lei si
muoveva nello spazio e
nel tempo, e i vari
movimenti del brano
sarebbero stati come le
facce di un prisma in
rotazione. Campogrande ha
dunque accettato la
commissione e lo
sconosciuto gli ha
mandato alcune foto della
sua fidanzata, gli ha
parlato di lei e, alla
fine, gliela ha
presentata personalmente.
E cosi nato cosi R (Un
ritratto per pianoforte e
orchestra), eseguito per
la prima volta
nell'aprile 2013 da Lilya
Zilberstein insieme
all'Orchestra Verdi di
Milano.In seguito, dopo
altre esecuzioni e un
documentario tv, diversi
pianisti hanno chiesto a
Campogrande di preparare
una versione per
pianoforte solo. E stato
cosi che ha preso forma
Nudo, un brano del tutto
simile a R tranne per il
fatto che, come
suggerisce il titolo, il
pianista e nudo, senza un
abito orchestrale.

Tauno
Marttinen (1912–2008)
studied in Viipuri and
later in Helsinki at the
Helsinki Conservatoire.
His piano teachers were
Ilmari Hannikainen and
Selim Palmgren, but he
soon became increasingly
interested in composing.
Marttinen was also the
conductor of the
Hämeenlinna City
Orchestra in 1949−1958
and the founder and
principal of the
Hämeenlinna Music
Institute.
Marttin
en started his composing
career in late Romantic
vein. However, his first
concerts in the 1940s met
with criticism since the
winds of Modernism had
already landed in
Finland. He then became
interested in Dodecaphony
and studied under
Vladimir Vogel in Ascona
but later abandoned
strict dodecaphony and
found his own, personal
style incorporating
elements from
Neo-classicism and
free-tonality with a hint
of mysticism – he was
called the Shaman of
Hämeenlinna (his
hometown).
Tauno
Marttinen was an
incredibly productive
composer; he wrote around
four hundred works with
opus numbers as well as a
wealth of other pieces.
His oeuvre includes 10
symphonies, concertos for
various solo instruments,
operas as well as vocal,
chamber and instrumental
works. Many of
Marttinen’s pieces have
become popular standard
repertoire, such as the
piano piece Kimalluksia
(Gleams). $22.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 4 to 6 weeks

German/English. Text:
Franck, Salomo. A
joyful dispute of the
gods is how Johann
Sebastian Bach's
librettist Salomon Franck
described the Birthday
Cantata for the court of
Saxony-Weissenfels, now
generally known as the
Hunting Cantata BWV 208.
The work was probably
first performed with the
composer present on 23
February 1713, Duke
Christian's 31st
birthday. On that
occasion the choir may
have numbered just four
soloists, but it can of
course be larger. Bach
also went on to perform
this colorful and varied
work, comprising 15 short
movements, several
times.
As the
cantata begins with a
recitative, there is an
opportunity to precede it
with an instrumental
movement. A suitable
piece is the opening
movement of the 1st
Brandenburg Concerto BWV
1046 with its hunting
horn sounds, which Bach
also used later in other
works such as the church
cantata BWV 52. The
edition includes this
movement from BWV 1046a
(the oldest version) as a
performance
suggestion. $7.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 2 to 3 weeks

Vivaldi's Winter from his

patterns in the lower

implied harmonies from
the original score,
spreading this energetic
rhythm throughout all the
sections of the
orchestra. Students will
have the opportunity to

language:
German/English. For
the magnificent opening
of the oratorio season at
the beginning of 1736
Handel presented a
composition which, like
hardly any of his other
oratorios, gave him the
opportunity to display
his musical artistry:
John Dryden's ode
Alexander's Feast or the
Power of Music, published
in 1696, demonstrates the
power of music by the
example of the ancient
hero, Alexander the
Great. From the
impressive lament on the
death of Darius, the King
of Persia, to the
boisterous Praise of
Bacchus Handel avails
himself of the entire
breadth of the musical
representation of the
emotions and the
possibilities for
expression. In the text
by Newburg Hamilton added
at the end of work St.
Cecilia elevates the
events of the ancient
heathen story, which
Handel expressed in
plastic, skillful
polyphony. Later, this
homage to the patron
saint of church music,
Handel also present the
opportunity to perform
the work on St. Cecilia's
Day (22 November). For
the first time the
present new edition is
based consistently on
Handel's conducting
score, which he used for
his own performances of
the oratorio, thus not
only eliminating timeworn
errors, but also offering
clarity concerning the
choruses, the arias and
recitatives, actually
performed in Handel's
concerts, as well as
their sequence of
performance. The new
Carus edition offers two
performance versions: the
version of the premiere
in 1736, as well as a
revised version from
1751. Furthermore, the
inclusion of the Concerto
for Harp HWV 294 (CV
55.294) is also possible;
Handel composed this work
especially for
Alexander's Feast (as an
illustration of
Timotheus, the ancient
poet who played the
lyre). For this purpose
the edition contains the
appropriate alternatives
for the sequence of the
movements. Score and
