oratorio - St. Paul , op.
36 - in 1836, at the age
of
twenty-seven.
The
first version, which was
premiered on 22 May 1836,
was then extensively
revised by the composer.
This second version,
which at the same time
served as the basis for
the published version,
was premiered as early as
October that year in
Birmingham . The acclaim
with which the oratorio
was received was
exceptional. Within
eighteen months of
completing the score,
Mendelssohn was able to
list fifty performances
of the work. Robert
Schumann praised the work
effusively and even
Richard Wagner, who later
denigrated Mendelssohn,
was full of admiration.
Today, St. Paul belongs
to the core repertoire of
sacred choral
music.
This Urtext
edition of the oratorio,
edited by the
internationally-recognise

Michael Cooper is based
on all critical sources.
As well as the principal
version of the work, the
score also includes for
the first time numbers
which were composed for
the first version and
subsequently removed.

One can
truly say that
Mendelssohn's St. Paul
oratorio is a genuine
work in progress - such
as one finds repeatedly
in the composer's works.
After the world premiere
in Dusseldorf in 1836,
the composer sighed:
Since I changed a number
of things after the
performance, notably in
the recitatives, and
omitted a few pieces
entirely, I really don't
know how these changes
can be made in the
quartet parts that have
already been
engraved.Luckily, the
score had not yet been
printed at this point in
time. It was published
not long afterwards
(1837) and served as the
basis for the old
Complete Edition, where,
however, it was mixed
together with other
sources.Michael Marker's
present Urtext edition
uses the first edition of
the score as the main
source for the first
time. Its inconsistencies
were emended by the
editor in agreement with
other contemporary
sources.By forgoing the
version transmitted by
Julius Rietz (1878), on
which all later
reprintings were based,
in favor of the score of
the first edition of
1835, which was
personally supervised by
the composer, a new
Paulus has come to light:
freed from a number of
conventionalizing,
adulterating retouchings,
at times more angular in
detail and thus more

Between 1905
and 1934, Gustav Holst
was Director of Music at
St Paul’s Girls
School in Brook Green,
London. St
Paul’s Suite,
written for the
school’s string
orchestra, was premiered
there in 1913 and
consists of four
movements: an energetic
Jig in 6/8 and
9/8, Ostinato,
based on a simple 4-note
theme, Intermezzo,
an energetic and rhythmic
dance and Finale,
adapted from the
Second Suite in F
in which Holst
brilliantly combines
The Dargason and
The English Dancing
Master, with the
traditional melody,
Greensleeves. <
