Hidas (1928-2007) was the
most prolific Hungarian
composer for wind
ensembles, and his works
are the most often
performed. His worldwide
popularity is based on
works such as Balettzene
(Ballet music), Vidam
zene (Cheerful music), El
nem tancolt balett
(Undanced ballet),
Requiem and Save the Sea.
His folk song suites,
which are enormously
popular in his homeland,
are fine examples of
Hidas' mature style in
the genre of folk song
arrangements. The first
suite works up nine folk
songs of differing
character and atmosphere,
while the second, with
its recurrent structure,
makes use of five
melodies, creating a
modern harmonic
environment around them
and thereby highlighting
even more the beauty of
the melodies. To perform
these works effectively,
ample technique is
required, as well as an
ability to shape the
music freely. Highly
recommended for ensembles
with an interest in
Hungarian wind music and
folklore.

Faure composed the
Cantique de Jean Racine
in 1865, the prizewinning
work for the completion
of his musical training.
The composer expanded the
original scoring for
choir and organ by adding
a string accompaniment;
the version with
orchestra was first
performed in 1906. As a
text Faure chose a French
adaptation by Jean Racine
of the Latin hymn Consors
paterni luminis. The
Cantique already displays
the characteristics of an
expressive choral setting
typical for Faure, as
well as the finely worked
out orchestral
accompaniment, and
together with the
Requiem, composed
considerably later, it is
among the most popular
works of the composer.

Mass by Charpentier, the
present work, ,Messe de
Minuit', ist without
doubt one of the most
popular. The work belongs
to the tradition of the
parody-Mass: the composer
adapted 10 noels - whose
titles are given in the
autograph - to the text
of the Ordinary. The
resulting music is fresh,
charming and
jubilant. The single
extant source is book 66
of the 25th volume of
Charpentier's autograph
,Meslanges' which was
sold to the Bibliotheque
Royale (now Bibliotheque
Nationale) Paris. The
manuscript is extremely
clear. All editorial
additions are placed in

Before the days
of photography, the great
state occasions were
captured in paintings and
tapestries. In this
Suite, the composer has
imagined the pomp and
splendor of the English
court at work and play,
capturing each mood in a
short
movement.
Stuart
Johnson has the fine
ability to capture moods
and scenes in music. He
was born in
Staffordshire, the county
for which he was Director
of Music until his
retirement in 1997. After
experience as a player in
brass bands, he served in
the band of the King's
Dragoon Guards before
training as a teacher and
working in schools.
Following a period as a
lecturer at
Northumberland College of
Education he became Music
Adviser to the
Metropolitan District of
Sandwell prior to his
appointment to
Staffordshire. He has
long experience as a
conductor, particularly
in the choral and band
fields and also wide
experience as an
adjudicator and examiner.
He has written
prolifically for bands
and orchestras and his
didactic publications are
used in many countries.
He has over eighty
published compositions
and arrangements, many of
which have been broadcast
on radio or television.
His commissioned works
include the cantata David
and Goliath which was
first performed at the
Royal Festival Hall,
Oregon Overture for wind
orchestra, Landscapes,
Sinfonietta No 2, Wessex
Dances and A Castle
Suite. Stuart Johnson has
recently completed
several commissions,
funded by National
Lottery grants, for bands
in Cumbria, the Isle of
Wight, and Staffordshire.
Requiem for Soprano,
Chorus and Orchestra, was
premiered successfully in
front of a capacity
audience in Lichfield
Cathedral in March 1997,
and received its first
London performance at St.
John's Smith Square in
March 1998. This
prestigious venue also
saw the first performance
of Songs and Sonnets for
unaccompanied mixed choir
in 2001. Stuart Johnson
has written extensively
for the theatre, his
music for the production
of Anna of the Five Towns
was used for both the
radio and television
adaptations His music
ranges in style from the
evocative and demanding
Sinfonietta for Wind
Orchestra, which has
received many
performances since its
premiere in the Royal
Festival Hall, including
a broadcast by the Band
of the Scots Guards, to
his ubiquitous Bandstand
Boogie which has set feet
tapping all over the
world. Apart from the
latter his most performed
work is probably Circus
Suite which was the
British Youth Band
Championship test piece
in 1980. Northumbrian
Suite and Landscapes have
also been used as
National Brass Band
Championship test pieces.
The Flint Knappers
commissioned as a test
piece for the 1998 East
Anglian Band Festival was
selected as a test piece
for the 1999 Australian
Championships. Before the

ben ritmato symbolises
how inexorable the course
of the world is. The
choir chants the question
about what Welt (the
world) actually is.
Hectic bustle is
expressed through a
pulsing basic motif. This
is repeated constantly
and moves through the
parts. A lyrical B flat
minor in the central
section allows us to
float like shadows on the
way into a dream.The
song text is a collage.
The first verse, by the
Baroque poet Christian
Hoffmann von
Hoffmannswaldau, is
concerned with the
vanitas motif: the world,
and everything which
seems beautiful to us, is
ephemeral. The second and
third verses were written
in the 18th century by
Johann Gottfried Herder.
Here, the poet expounds
the view that real life
does not take place in
the world and that
people's mathematical
abilities are
insufficient to measure
space and
time.

Saint-Saens in a critical
new edition. Among the
sacred works by
Saint-Saens there are
just two settings of the
mass: the Messe de
Requiem op. 54 from his
middle period (1878), and
the Mass op. 4 dating
from 1856. This was first
performed on 21 April
1857. Camille Saint-Saens
was a devoted follower of
historicism as part of
the reform movement in
French church music. This
is more evident in the
mass published here than
anywhere else. The model
for this work is the
unison Messe Royale by
Henry DuMont (1610-1683).
Saint-Saens combined its
Gregorian style in a
convincing manner with
contemporary elements of
Romantic composition, an
expressive chromaticism,
which determines the
harmonic progression.
Alongside the orchestral
forces, the Grand Orgue
plays an important role.
Used as a solo
instrument, it is an
equal partner in the
