This
musical fantasy depicts
the history of the Dutch
fortified town of Elburg.
The work begins with an
atmospheric medieval
picture of the Convent of
St Agnes, the nunnery
that was built in the
first half of the 15th
century. We hear the
sound of the convent
bells together with an
upward motif, which will
reappear later in the
work. Next, the rest of
Elburg is featured,
including the fortress -
from which the bells of
the Sint-Nicolaaskerk
(Saint Nicholas Church)
are ringing. Then,
cheerful sounds can be
heard at the Vischpoort
(Fish Gate), where a
dancing group is
performing a 16th century
French folk dance (a
branle des chevaux). We
also hear old wagons
rumbling over the
town’scobble
stones. Trade made this
Hanseatic town a lively
place. The repetitive
upward motif first heard
in the introduction now
develops into a more
distinct feature,
reflecting the mercantile
spirit of the town
residents.Then follows
the slow middle movement,
in which the clock has
been turned back to the
time when Elburg was
still lying on the
Zuiderzee (which was a
bay of the North Sea),
and was struggling with
floods. After the second
St. Marcellus Flood
(1362) and the water
flood of 1367 it was
decided that the town
would be relocated. We
now hear the theme of
branle des chevaux in a
minor key, followed by a
death bell sounding in
remembrance of the
drowned citizens of the
former town. Back in our
own time, a slow,
expressive theme in
Baroque style mirrors
Elburg’s tranquil
places, such as the
Feithenhof (Feithen
Court) and the
Weduwenhofje (Widow
Court). Then the bustle
returns with motifs from
the introduction,
followed by an attractive
theme in which
present-day Elburg is
portrayed with its many
tourists. Now, suddenly,
there is an echo from the
past, depicting the
dramatic floods and wars
that once plagued the
town. This leads to the
grand closing theme:
branle des chevaux
is heard for a final time
from the perspective of
the historic town centre.
Deze muzikale
fantasie vertelt de
geschiedenis van de
Nederlandse vestingstad
Elburg. Het werk begint
met een middeleeuws
sfeerbeeld vanuit het
Agnietenklooster, het
nonnenklooster dat in de
eerste helft van de 15e
eeuw werd gebouwd. We
horen de kloosterklok
samen met een opwaarts
motief, dat ook later in
het werk terugkomt.
Vervolgens komt de rest
van Elburg aan bod,
inclusief de vesting -
van waaruit de klokken
van de Grote of
Sint-Nicolaaskerk
weergalmen. Dan klinken
bij de Vischpoort de
vrolijke geluiden van een
dansgroep die daar een
16e-eeuwse Franse
volksdans (branle des
chevaux) uitvoert.
Ook horen we oude karren
over de kinderkopjes van
de stad denderen.
Dehandel maakt deze
Hanzestad tot een
levendige plaats. Het
zich steeds herhalende
opwaartse motief uit de
inleiding krijgt hier een
nadrukkelijker karakter
en verbeeldt de
handelsgeest van de
stedelingen.Dan volgt het
langzame middendeel,
waarin de klok wordt
teruggedraaid naar de
tijd dat Elburg nog
direct aan de Zuiderzee
lag en te kampen had met
overstromingen. Na de
tweede
Sint-Marcellusvloed
(1362) en de watervloed
van 1367 werd besloten
dat de stad verplaatst
zou worden. We horen het
thema van de branle des
chevaux in mineur,
gevolgd door een
doodsklok, die de
verdronken inwoners van
de voormalige stad
herdenkt. Terug in onze
eigen tijd verklankt een
langzaam, expressief
thema in barokke stijl de
verstilde plekken in de
stad, zoals het
Feithenhof en het
Weduwenhofje. Dan keert
de levendigheid terug met
motieven uit de
inleiding, gevolgd door
een aansprekend thema
waarin het Elburg van nu
met zijn vele toeristen
doorklinkt. Plotseling is
er dan nog even een echo
uit het verleden: de
dramatiek van de
overstromingen en
oorlogen die de stad ooit
teisterden. Hieruit
vloeit het grootse
slotthema voort: de
branle des chevaux is
voor de laatste keer te
horen vanuit het
perspectief van de
historische
binnenstad.

van menselijke emoties,

het leven op de aarde,
zijn o.a.: blijdschap,
verdriet, verwondering,
berusting, hoop, wanhoop.
De aarde is de vaste

klinkt de fanfare: soms

Hymnus was
commissioned by the
Wilhelmina Easterein
Fanfare Orchestra in the
Autumn of 1999 for their
performance at the World
Music Contest,
Kerkrade.
The
commission was the result
of a collaboration
between the composer and
the thenmusical director,
Marten van der
Wal.
The exact
meaning of the word
Hymnus is not known but
it is taken in this
presentation to mean hymn
or hymn-like. The
melodic material is
organic and grows from an
initial unison tone.
Thisinterval is gradually
expanded to form the cell
F E C F, a semitone,
third, fifth. The only
other melodic motif is
the ascending three-note
pattern spanning a major
third. This is the second
of his compositions to
use this ascending motif,
theother being Fanfare
for a Bright New Age for
Brass Band and Organ,
also of 2000. These
characteristic intervals
appear in many
contrasting moods and
guises throughout the
piece.
The
opening unison notes are
intended to convey as
sense ofpower and
magnificence, like the
first sounds at the
dawning of the
universe. After the
immense power, a period
of stunned silence and
reverence. The evolution
of the hymn melody
incorporates a variety of
moods and atmospheres,
sometimes expressing much
joy and celebration
whilst also suggesting
periods of intense
savagery or prayerful
contemplation. The
hymn builds as the piece
progresses and is finally
stated in its complete
form at letter W.
The official
worldpremiere of the work
was given by Wilhelmina
Easterein at the World
Music Contest 2001.
Whilst the composer was
unable to attend in
person, he was able to
enjoy the premier
simultaneously
transmitted via a mobile
phone from the
audience!
Conductors Note The
tempo indications are to
be viewed as a guide
rather than a literal
instruction. Within the
music there is an innate
sense of pulse and metre,
lending itself to

Hymnus was
commissioned by the
Wilhelmina Easterein
Fanfare Orchestra in the
Autumn of 1999 for their
performance at the World
Music Contest,
Kerkrade.
The
commission was the result
of a collaboration
between the composer and
the thenmusical director,
Marten van der
Wal.
The exact
meaning of the word
Hymnus is not known but
it is taken in this
presentation to mean hymn
or hymn-like. The
melodic material is
organic and grows from an
initial unison tone.
Thisinterval is gradually
expanded to form the cell
F E C F, a semitone,
third, fifth. The only
other melodic motif is
the ascending three-note
pattern spanning a major
third. This is the second
of his compositions to
use this ascending motif,
theother being Fanfare
for a Bright New Age for
Brass Band and Organ,
also of 2000. These
characteristic intervals
appear in many
contrasting moods and
guises throughout the
piece.
The
opening unison notes are
intended to convey as
sense ofpower and
magnificence, like the
first sounds at the
dawning of the
universe. After the
immense power, a period
of stunned silence and
reverence. The evolution
of the hymn melody
incorporates a variety of
moods and atmospheres,
sometimes expressing much
joy and celebration
whilst also suggesting
periods of intense
savagery or prayerful
contemplation. The
hymn builds as the piece
progresses and is finally
stated in its complete
form at letter W.
The official
worldpremiere of the work
was given by Wilhelmina
Easterein at the World
Music Contest 2001.
Whilst the composer was
unable to attend in
person, he was able to
enjoy the premier
simultaneously
transmitted via a mobile
phone from the
audience!
Conductors Note The
tempo indications are to
be viewed as a guide
rather than a literal
instruction. Within the
music there is an innate
sense of pulse and metre,
lending itself to
considerable rubato.
Melody is king, and all
else is mere support and
decoration, careful
attention must therefore
be given to balance.

Avalon is a
one-part composition. The
surprising opening
measures describe the
sudden entrance into
another world. After
these initial measures,
we hear a choral-like
melody, which is repeated
three times in different
instrumentations with
increasing intensity.
This represents the
procession of the ghosts
dwelling in the
underworld of Avalon,
headed by the mighty
magician Merlin.The
exalted sound is then
suddenly interrupted by a
fast movement, in which
ostinato figures
alternate with bi-tonal
motives. This represents
the attempt of some evil
characters to invade
Avalon. Mordred is the
leader of this horde and
together they disturb the
peace and quiet in the
otherwisecalm Avalon. The
flourish of trumpets
heralds the entrance of
the Knights of the Round
Table who drive away the
intruders and return to
their castle, Tintagel,
in a triumphal
procession. Upon their
return, the next problem
presents itself. An
inexplicable disease
plagues the resting
ghosts.The Knights and
the Council of the Wise
are convened to find out
the cause of this
problem. Musically this
can be heard in the
repetition of the initial
themes. The Knights and
the Council of the Wise
determine that the
presence of mortals is
the reason that the
resting ghosts are
suffering. There is
simply no room for mortal
souls in Avalon. After a
powerful statement by
King Arthur, we hear a
glissando referring to
the very first measures,
and… we are back in
the normal world. The
journey through the
underworld has come to an
end and a dream is over.

The word
‘tsunami’ is of
Japanese origin. When you
look it up in a
dictionary, you will find
that it means ‘a great
sea wave produced by
submarine earth movement
or volcanic eruption’.
A megatsunami is the
superlative of this
awesome expressionof
power that nature can
create, and has
catastrophic
consequences.
When Carl Wittrock
completed this
composition not many such
big earth movements had
occurred, but since then
we have become all too
familiar with the
disastrousconsequences
which a tsunami may
have. On the 26th of
December 2004 a heavy
seaquake took place near
the Indonesian island of
Sumatra. Tidal waves 10
meters in height ravaged
the coastal regions of
many countries for miles
around. The tsunamitook
the lives of thousands of
people and destroyed many
villages and
towns.
There are
more areas which run the
risk of being struck by a
tsunami, such as the
island of La Palma, one
of the Canary Islands.
This island is based on
oceaniccrust at a
fracture zone and as such
is one of nature’s time
bombs. The consequences
of a natural calamity
like a megatsunami are
immense. In the case
of La Palma, the tidal
wave will move in the
direction of South
America, where it may
reach 50km inland,
destroying everything on
its way.
In his
composition Wittrock
describes an ordinary day
which will have an
unexpected ending.
Right from the
beginning there seems to
be something in the air,
the music creating an
oppressiveatmosphere of
impending disaster.
Themes are interrupted,
broken off suddenly,
followed by silence,
suggesting the calm
before the storm.
Suddenly a short
climax (glissandi in the
trombone part) indicates
the seaquake, and the
megatsunami isa fact.
Hereafter follows a
turbulent passage
symbolising the huge
rolling waves. After
nature’s force has
spent itself, resignation
sets in and the
composition ends with a
majestic ode to
nature.
Het woord
tsunami is afkomstig uit
het Japans. Het
woordenboek geeft als
betekenis: een vloedgolf
als gevolg van een
onderzeese aardbeving.
Een megatsunami is de
overtreffende trap van
deze vorm van
natuurgeweld en heeft
catastrofale
gevolgen.
Toen
Carl Wittrock deze
compositie voltooide
waren er nog niet veel
voorbeelden van
dergelijke grote
bevingen, maar inmiddels
weten we maar al te goed
welke desastreuze
gevolgen een tsunami kan
veroorzaken. Op 26
december 2004 vond ereen
zware beving plaats in de
zee nabij het
Indonesische eiland
Sumatra. Vloedgolven van
wel 10 meter hoog
teisterden de kuststreken
van menig land in de
verre omtrek. De tsunami
eiste duizenden
mensenlevens en
verwoestte vele dorpen
ensteden.
Er zijn
meer gebieden waar sprake
is van een directe
dreiging, zoals op het
eiland La Palma, één
van de Canarische
eilanden. Dit eiland ligt
op een breukvlak en is
daarmee een tijdbom van
de natuur. Bij een
calamiteit als
eenmegatsunami zijn de
gevolgen niet te
overzien. In het
geval van La Palma
begeeft de vloedgolf van
enkele honderden meters
zich richting Zuid
Amerika met alle gevolgen
van dien. Tot ongeveer 50
kilometer landinwaarts
heeft de megatsunami
eenallesverwoestende
werking.
In de
compositie schetst
Wittrock een gewone dag
die ongewoon zal aflopen.
Al vanaf het begin hangt
er iets in de lucht en is
er sprake van een
dreigende, beklemmende
sfeer. Themas worden
onderbroken
doorplotselinge
afbrekingen en stiltes.
Opeens is daar de korte
climax (glissandi in
trombones) die de beving
symboliseert en de
megatsunami is een feit.
Een onrustig gedeelte
vangt aan, daarmee de
rollende, voortstuwende
golven symboliserend. Na
hetnatuurgeweld is er
berusting en The Power of

This is an
ancient Welsh air that
was first published in
Relics of the Welsh Bards
in 1794. Dafydd (David)
Owain was a famous Welsh
bard who lived on a farm
called Gareg Wen (The
White Rock) in Eifionydd,
Carnarnvonshire, North
Wales. Tradition has it
that on his deathbed he
called for his harp and
composed this lovely
melody, requesting that
it be played at his
funeral. Accordingly, it
was later played at the
parish church of
Ynys-Cynhaiarn. Lyrics
were later added by
Ceiriog Hughes, which
describe the melody's
inspiration. This version
for fanfare band retains
all the beauty and
simplicity of the
original.
Deze

overlevering vroeg hij op
zijn sterfbed om zijn
harp en componeerde hij
vervolgens deze prachtige
melodie, met het verzoek
om die te laten spelen op
zijn begrafenis.
Overeenkomstigzijn wens
werd de melodie gespeeld
in de dorpskerk van
Ynys-Cynhaiarn. De tekst
werd later toegevoegd
door Ceiriog Hughes en
beschrijft de
ontstaansgeschiedenis van
deze
muziek.
Dafydd
Owain war ein
berühmter walisischer

Bauernhof namens Gareg

Es wird erzählt, dass
Dafydd auf seinem
Sterbebett nach seiner
Harfe verlangte und dort
diese Melodie
komponierte, mit der
Bitte, man möge sie zu
seiner Beerdigung
spielen. Die Schlichtheit
dieses bezaubernden Airs
