Country Blues Guitar styles span a wide horizon. In these three lessons the ideas and techniques of Rev. Gary Davis, Charley Jordan, Tommy Johnson and Mississippi John Hurt are presented. The arrangements vary from alternating bass to a Delta strum to a monotonic bass. In notation and tablature with three compact discs featuring 3 full hours of note-by-note, phrase-by-phrase instruction. LESSON ONE: Rev. Davis's Cocaine Blues and You Got The Pocket Book, I Got The Key both played in the key of C and in what Rev. Davis called 'old fashion' pickin'. The popular blues Crow Jane played in the key of E. LESSON TWO: Charley Jordan's Keep It Clean and Hunkie Tunkie Blues both played in the key of E and presenting Jordan's unusual blues approach. Tommy Johnson's Canned Heat played in dropped D tuning. LESSON THREE: We begin with Come Back Baby, a slow blues in A using a monotonic bass. This is a challenging set of three lessons presenting a variety of tunes from string band rags to classic rags to novelty instrumentals. The three audio CDs give 3 full hours of note-by-note, phrase-by-phrase instruction. LESSON ONE: Two New Orleans standards are presented in this lesson. Both are played in the key of C with a style that combines an alternating bass with single-string runs and counterpoint lines. Mabel's Dream was popularized by the King Oliver Band. High Society is a well known Mardi Gras instrumental. LESSON TWO: Two rags are presented in this lesson. We begin in a dropped D tuning with the classic rag Powder Rag. This is followed by an arrangement of the 1928 Dallas String Band recording of Dallas Rag. This combines alternating bass with counterpoint techniques and single-string runs. LESSON THREE: One of Rev. Davis's most popular show instrumentals was Soldier's March. Par AL PETTEWAY. Master guitarist Al Petteway ventures into new territory with 15 Celtic-inspired, traditional, and New Age fingerstyle compositions in standard and alternate tunings. Derived from Al's award-winning solo recording of the same title, each piece bears the inimitable Petteway signature of profoundly graceful, inspired innovation. Written in standard notation and tab with several pieces in alternate tunings. Al began his professional music career at the age of 11. He played guitar, drums, and string bass with a variety of rock and folk acts in the Washington D.C. area during the 60's, becoming a local legend by the time he went to college to study music composition in 1970. In1977, Al took a job with The National Geographic Society. His work as Supervisor of Picture Editing for the society's Image Collection, gave him the artistic freedom to develop his own acoustic guitar style. While long recognized as one of the country's foremost bluegrass and folk sidemen, Celtic music specialty label Maggie's Music signed Al in 1993 and released Whispering Stones following by The Waters and the Wild-exposing his solo acoustic guitar work to an international audience for the first time.
