Par AHO KALEVI. Kalevi Aho's (b. 1949) concerto no. 2 for cello and orchestra (2013) is in five movements performed without a break. It begins with a swinging Berceuse, followed by a very quick, virtuosic Presto in 5/8 time. The heart of the concerto is the cadenza-like third movement, Adagio, dominated throughout by the soloist. A fairly short Allegretto is followed by the closing Epilogue. This has flashbacks to the opening movement, and they lead to a cadenza in which the soloist plays only flageolet notes and pizzicatos. The concerto ends with a virtuosic coda in 5/8 time evocative of the second movement. Arto Noras gave the concerto its first performance with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra conducted by Osmo Vänskä in Naantali on June 5, 2014. It was a joint commission from the Naantali Music Festival and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra. This product consists of the solo part (18 pages) and piano reduction by Kari Vehmanen (62 pages) - have a look inside by clicking “sample”. The concerto is scored for a fairly small orchestra. Simon Laks (1901-1983), who moved from Warsaw to Paris in 1926 at the age of 25, belonged to the large group of composers from Central and Eastern European countries who went down in 20th-century music history as the „École de Paris“. Slavic temperament amalgamated in their music with French esprit, the folklore of their native countries combined with the stylistic elements of neoclassicism and jazz typical of the time. As a member of the „Association of Young Polish Musicians“, Laks quickly made his way into French musical life. However, his career was ended with the beginning of World War 2 due to the collaboration of the Vichy government with Nazi Germany. Internment in 1941 was followed by deportation to Auschwitz in 1942. Laks survived the Shoah as a member and later leader of a camp band in Birkenau, which he testified to in his moving book Music in Auschwitz. After the traumatic experiences, Laks did not return to regular compositional activity until the 1960s, producing an opera, songs, and chamber music works, some of which were awarded important composition prizes. At the peak of this optimistic creative phase, he composed incidental music for Peretz Hirschbein's famous Yiddish comedy Dem Schmids Techter (The Blacksmith's Daughters), which premiered in New York in 1918, for a new production of the play at the Théâtre de l’Entrepôt in Paris. Along with Prokofiev's Overture on Hebrew Themes and Shostakovich's cycle From Yiddish (Jewish) Folk Poetry, it is one of the most significant 20th-century explorations of art music with Jewish folklore – homage to a culture irreparably destroyed. From the original score, Holger Groschopp compiled two suites, for violoncello and piano and piano solo, that capture the essence of Lak‘s enchanting drama music. Il l'a jouée devant les têtes couronnées d'Europe au château de Windsor, dans des tournées en France et en Allemagne, ainsi qu'à Cologne avec Franz Lizst au piano. À l'origine configurée en un cycle de quatre mouvements, le compositeur a lui-même supprimé deux mouvements - Zamabada-Ronde des muletiers, Sérénade - aujourd'hui disparus, juste avant leur publication sous le numéro d'opus 22. Par BEETHOVEN LUDWIG VAN. Les deux Sonates op. 102 composées en 1815 se tiennent à la frontière du style tardif de Beethoven, aux sonorités souvent austères. Un critique de l’édition originale déclara en 1818 qu’elles «font très certainement partie des choses les plus étranges et les plus bizarres qui aient été écrites depuis longtemps.» À partir du schéma classique établi, Beethoven explore ici les possibilités de transformation et d’élargissement de la forme sonate, qui font de l’opus 102 l’accomplissement final de ses œuvres pour violoncelle. Dans la Sonate en Ré majeur se reflète la manière dont Beethoven fait appel au contrepoint traditionnel: si le mouvement initial permet d’admirer des combinaisons raffinées de thèmes excessivement variés, la partie «Allegro fugato» du Finale témoigne de la façon dont Beethoven tire d’un simple thème un art de la fugue des plus élaborés. Soon after its composition in 1886, Camille Saint-Saëns asked Auguste Durand that Le Carnaval des animaux, which he thought of as a parodic fantasia, should only appear in print posthumously. He probably believed that this entertainment would tarnish the seriousness of the rest of his oeuvre. The Carnaval was therefore published in February 1922, two months after the composer's death. Nevertheless the composer contravened the restrictions he had imposed: in 1886 Charles-Joseph Lebouc obtained the authorization to make and publish a transcription for piano and cello of the penultimate piece in this musical bestiary: no.13, Le Cygne . This arrangement, which became a bravura piece for cello, was an immense success each listener compelled to imagine a majestic swan gliding across a lake , a success which Saint-Saëns was obliged to accept. / Violoncelle / Durand

Brahms completed his Cello Sonata op. 99 during the productive summer of 1886. The first public performance took place in Vienna on 24 November of the same year. Robert Hausmann played the cello part and the composer himself was his partner at the piano. Even though the work was generally received positively, it took some years until it was fully appreciated and gained its irrevocable place in the cello repertoire.Of particular value to the editors were the two early performance editions of the Cello Sonata op. 99 by Hugo Becker and Carl Friedberg, as well as by Julius Klengel. Both cellists, Becker and Klengel, had a connection to Brahms who very much admired and trusted Becker's playing and who performed together with Klengel. This edition not only incorporates Becker's and Klengel's performance markings but also Hausmann's for whom the piece was written. As such, the Barenreiter edition comes with a cello part marked with fingering and bowing by the editors which are based on the practices of Brahms' contemporaries. We also provide an unmarked Urtext part.An important part of this edition is the extensive Preface. Firstly it informs about the work's origin, early performances, its publication as well as early reception. Truly remarkable is the unique Performance Practice Commentary. This Concerto en Ut mineur for cello and piano was first published in 1947 by Editions Salabert, being attributed to Johann Christian Bach with harmonization by Henri Casadesus. Certain musicological studies after its publication proved that the Concerto should not have been attributed to Johann Christian Bach after all, as it had actually been composed 'in the style of Bach? some two centuries later. Nevertheless, the Concerto has been a success and is today often performed and studied closely.
