Belcanto is
a term for the Italian
art of singing which took
its development from the
richly ornamented solo
vocalism of the early
17th century (nobile
maniera di cantare) and
dominated European
operatic singing until
the first half of the
19th century. Complete
control over the voice
meant not only legato and
messa di voce, but also
appoggiatura and
portamento, as well as
virtuoso ornamentation by
means of coloratura
(canto fiorito). This
development towards
utmost virtuosity,
emulating instrumental
playing techniques, led
to a mannered, artificial
style on the one hand,
but on the other also
emphasized the physical
aspects of interpretation
(castrati were considered
the ideal belcanto
singers). And today? In
his essay The Grain of
the Voice, Roland Barthes
writes: The grain is the
body in the voice as it
sings, the hand as it
writes and the limb as it
performs. Initially, he
refers to the friction
between language and
voice in singing, but
then transfers his
thoughts to the
physicality of
instrumental music. In
this spirit, I went in
search of beautiful
singing, a beauty which
perhaps results in the
very place where the
grain, the roughness,
meaning also physical
resistance, are not
smoothed over. The oboe
seemed very suitable to
me for singing with such
a physical expressivity,
as a very unruly
instrument! The backbone
of my piece is one
single, quasi endless
melodic line, consisting
of intervals that are
constantly pulled apart
and contracted again
(breathing). Many
different actions attach
themselves to these
notes: coloratura,
trills, chords
(multiphonics), double
flageolets. However,
there are not only sound
types, but also impulses,
repetitions, rhythmic
figures and other
elements: composed
elements of belcanto. In
the opera tradition
described above, these
were improvised ornaments
or additions; here they
become composed figures
which originate with the
notes of the melody, but
also pull on them, bend
them, and charge them

Chester Roberts.
Initially composed for
vocalists, it was
transcribed and adapted
for tuba or bass
trombone. Ideal for
developing the range of
the tessiture, it also
has a strong musicality.
Bass trombone players
could also find it hugely
beneficial for developing
their technique. Marco
Bordogni (1789-1856) was
an Italian operatic tenor
and a singing professor
who was based in Paris.
He performed in several
of Rossini's operas and
was awarded the
Légion d'Honneur
in 1839. He also had a
lot of influence on one
of his famous students,
the English tenor Sims
Reeves.

clarinet). Approxima
tely 9 minutes in length,
the title ' Yellow Green
' is a tribute to the two
colours of the Brazilian
flag. The introduction
gives way to a vast Fugue
(marked Vivace) dipped in
the colours of swing. The
central Adagio floats a
dreamy, timeless melody.
The brief finale brings
together the fugue's
thematic material with
one last recommendation
for the performers: 'Feel
jazz'. This invigorating
work was recorded for the
Chant de Linos label by
its dedicatees, the Omega
Quartet
clarinetists.&rdquo.

During his ''years of
pilgrimage'' spent in
Italy, the young Liszt
gained enough musical
inspiration from the
local musical, artistic,
and literary heritage to
last for decades. These
intense impressions are
recorded in Volume 2 of
Années de pelerinage,
whose sources range from
Raphael to Michelangelo,
Dante, and Petrarch.
Three of the latter's
sonnets (47: Benedetto
sia 'l giorno 104: Pace
non trovo and 123: I'
vidi in terra angelici
costumi) were first set
by Liszt as songs and,
shortly afterwards,
arranged for piano solo.
The songs and, as a
result, the piano pieces
as well, reflect the
style of Italian bel
canto - Donizetti and
Bellini - rather than
following the GermanLied
tradition. And while this
feature was criticized by
the contemporary press,
the broadly arching
melodic lines of these
pieces and their
Mediterranean passion
have always carried away
performer and listener
alike. This revised
(2018) edition contains
the Three Sonnets in two
versions: the first
version was published in
the course of 1846 and
1847, and the second, as
part of Volume 2 of
Années de pelerinage, in
1858. Based on the New
Liszt Edition, the
present volume provides a
revised score, a
facsimile reproduction,

great composers of
Italian bel canto opera
also wrote marvelous
sacred music. Yet most of
these pieces are rarely
performed. This is also
true of Gaetano
Donizetti’s Messa
di Requiem, which he
composed as an expression
of grief at the early
death of Vincenzo Bellini
in 1835. Neither
performed nor printed
during Donizetti’s
lifetime, the Requiem is
ripe for rediscovery. A
rich and highly intense
work, it features
dramatic choruses with
full orchestra, fugues,
and a cappella passages
that alternate with
lengthy cantilenas for
the soloists. These solo
cantilenas are often
scored for three male
voices accompanied by low
winds to create a dark
timbre. The soprano and
alto soloists do not
themselves sing any solo
arias, instead remaining
part of the solo
ensemble.Carus is
