Badla
nds occur throughout the
world, and are
represented by dramatic
terrain created
by sediment that
is deposited in
layers,
then solidifies and
 is eroded over
millions of years. These
processes leave stark,
but
beautiful structures
in a harsh and alien
landscape. BadlandsÂ
opens with a first theme
that depicts the stark
emptiness of the badland
terrain. This moves to a
brooding, mysterious
second theme followed by
variations on this
theme. A brief lyrical
theme and a return to
the second theme follow.
The piece ends with a
return of the first theme
for a dramatic
finish. Badlands occur
throughout the world, but
many of the most striking
are in Canada and the
United States. This
dramatic terrain is
created by sediment that
is deposited in layers,
then solidifies and is
eroded over millions of
years. These processes
leave stark, but
beautiful structures in a
harsh and alien
landscape. The regions
known as badlands are
frequently difficult to
impossible to navigate on
foot and are often
considered to be sacred
lands by cultures that
live in these regions.
Badlands opens with a
first theme that depicts
the stark emptiness of
the badland terrain. This
moves to a brooding,
mysterious second theme
followed by variations on
this theme. A brief
lyrical theme and a
return to the second
theme follow. The piece
ends with a return of the
first theme for a
dramatic finish.I enjoyed
writing this piece and
hope your students will
enjoy playing these
contrasting styles.

Colour) is a reflection
on the life and work of
the German artist Paula
Modersohn-Becker who died
aged 31 in 1907. Maxwell
Davies first got to know
the artist's work whilst
on a school exchange in
Hamburg in 1951 and the
composer has since
written that
Modersohn-Becker's work
has influenced the way
that he views the
relationship between art
and the landscape in
which it is produced.
This is a particularly
significant statement for
a composer whose music is
often a response to the
land and seascape of his
adopted home in the
Orkney Isles.
Commissioned by the
Bremer Philharmoniker and
first performed by them
in 2007, the 30 minute
orchestral work in three
movements is one of the
key works by Maxwell
Davies in recent
years.

The Lost City
of Shambhala takes the
listener on a journey to
the discovery of the
mythical utopia, nested
in the Himalayas. In
Sanskrit, Shambhala means
place of peace, and the
music paints an
Eden-esque landscape
shrouded in mystery. But

with hostility as the

The title
No people. comes from the
surrealist Raymond
Roussel. In 1932 he
published a long poem
called New Impressions of
Africa. For this he
commissioned 59 drawings
to illustrate the text.
The commission was given
to the artist through a
detective agency so he
never knew who the
commissioner was or saw
the text he was supposed
to illustrate. All he got
was instructions for each
drawing and he had to
make the drawings
accordingly. A typical
instruction might
beNocturnal landscape.

thin crescent of moon.

arm raised and fingers
outspread, dropping a
pebble (still visible)
down a well and seemingly
straining to hear the
sound of its splash. (No

Roussel put the drawings

strangeness they might

the text in front of him.
It's the juxtaposition of
