The
three-act operetta LA
RONDINE (The Swallow) by
Giacomo Puccini
(1858-1924) was first
completed in 1916 and
premiered at the Grand
Théâtre de Monte Carlo
on March 27, 1917. It
tells the story of Magda,
a Parisian courtesan, who
is torn between more
transactional love she
has chosen and the
romantic love of a wife
with the young man
Ruggero, whom she meets
at a small house party of
her protector Rambaldo,
then again at a Paris
nightspot. After leaving
to live with Ruggero for
some time, she flees back
to Rambaldo when Ruggero
proposes marriage,
declaring that she cannot
keep her past a secret
and she will not allow
her previous life to
bring grief to both
Ruggero and his parents.
Never satisfied, Puccini
revised the operetta in
both 1920 and 1921,
altering the ending each
time, and he passed
before he settled on the
definitive version. The
beautiful tenor aria
PARIGI! È LA CITTÀ DEI
DESIDERI (Paris! It is
the city of desire) was
not included in the
original libretto and
added by Puccini to give
Ruggero, the romantic
lead, something to do in
the first act. While it
does not move the plot
forward, the aria does
quickly endear listeners
to the Ruggero character.
The aria was later cut
from the opera and is not
usually heard in staged
versions, although the
music was used again with
different text in
Puccini's 1917 song
MORIRE?, S. 89. This
edition of the aria by
Michael Kaye is from the
second version (1920) of
the opera.

The rags in

Lovrien, written when he

written in 1980 and is
dedicated to his
girlfriend of that summer
at the National Music
Camp at Interlochen,
Michigan. It also owes a
debt to another friend,
Gregory Loselle, whose
Broadway-musical-in-progr

melody. Lewisville (1987)
is subtitled A Slow Drag
– referring to the
specific ragtime dance
style and probably not
the character of the town
of Lewisville, Texas
where the composer lived
when it was written. A
Shy Smile (1979) was
written after meeting a
particularly cute french

A salute to
the famous sailboat race,
this rollicking piece in
A minor introduces
compound time with an
opening (and closing)
section in 12/8. The fast
flowing music of the
opening, vividly
suggestive of a ship
slicing through the
waves, returns in a
higher key (B minor)
after a warmly scored,
sweepingly melodic middle
section. This is a piece
whose sophistication is
an excellent showcase for
a more advanced
performing
group. Written in 12/8
in A minor,
America’s Cup
evokes the intensity and
momentum of a wild sea
with driving triplets,
sweeping melodies, and
accented downbeats. The
A-material from the
opening measure is played
aggressively but lightly
enough to keep the
feeling of forward
motion. Strong accents
and rhythmically precise
playing in the cello and
bass provide solid
support for the fast
moving violin and viola
passages. Measure 67
begins the slow, pastoral
setting of the
B-material. A gentle,
lyrical violin motive in
A major grows into a
high, sweeping melody
over sustained harmonies.
This provides a brief
repose before returning
to the fastoriginal tempo
and minor key as the
recapitulation begins at
m. 90. A modulation to B
minor (m. 94) lifts the
energy of the piece and
gives young players the
challenge of playing the
running lines in another
key. Measure 118 builds
to the end, keeping the
intensity a soft dynamic
and growing into the
final syncopated tutti
unison figure in mm.
122–123.

This is one
very cool and tasty
ballad. After a short 4
bar piano intro, the
melody is played by a
quartet made up of your
strongest players -
trumpet, alto, tenor and
trombone. The whole Band
joins in for some great
ensemble work (trumpets
never leave the staff)
which leads into an easy
but very hip piano solo.
Then more great ensemble,
and finally the piano is
again featured at the
end. The piano part is
completely written out,
and the right hand has a
single note line
throughout. There's
nothing high, loud or
fast here - but what a
great way to impress and
audience by showcasing
your band's ability to
play with A Gentle
Touch.

Leok
adiya Kashperova
(1872-1940), hitherto
consigned to a footnote
in musical history as
Stravinsky's piano
teacher, is undergoing
rediscovery. A double
graduate of the St
Petersburg Conservatoire,
she emerged as a virtuoso
pianist and composer in
the romantic tradition.
She was associated with
some of the great
musicians of her day,
including Mily
Alexayevich Balakirev and
Leopold von Auer. She
performed in both Germany
and the UK in the 1900s,
but her career petered
out after 1920. These new
editions of the Cello
Sonatas 1 & 2 have
been broadcast and
recorded, whilst new
editions of her Symphony
and hitherto unpublished
Piano Concerto have
recently been issued.
Kashperova's Romantic
empathy with nature and
childhood may be keenly
observed in her chamber
music and songs. The
six-movement piano suite
In the Midst of Nature
(1910) in no exception in
the way it uses
evocations of nature to
express nostalgia for her
childhood in the peaceful
and remote Russian
countryside. In the Midst
of Nature also resents an
artfully graded
progression, indicating
that Kashperova probably
shared this music with
her many pupils: the
early movements are
within the range of the
talented young player
whilst the latter
movements require the
technique and
interpretative maturity
of a conservatoire
student, the whole work
being admirably suited to
the professional
recital.

During his ''years of
pilgrimage'' spent in
Italy, the young Liszt
gained enough musical
inspiration from the
local musical, artistic,
and literary heritage to
last for decades. These
intense impressions are
recorded in Volume 2 of
Années de pelerinage,
whose sources range from
Raphael to Michelangelo,
Dante, and Petrarch.
Three of the latter's
sonnets (47: Benedetto
sia 'l giorno 104: Pace
non trovo and 123: I'
vidi in terra angelici
costumi) were first set
by Liszt as songs and,
shortly afterwards,
arranged for piano solo.
The songs and, as a
result, the piano pieces
as well, reflect the
style of Italian bel
canto - Donizetti and
Bellini - rather than
following the GermanLied
tradition. And while this
feature was criticized by
the contemporary press,
the broadly arching
melodic lines of these
pieces and their
Mediterranean passion
have always carried away
performer and listener
alike. This revised
(2018) edition contains
the Three Sonnets in two
versions: the first
version was published in
the course of 1846 and
1847, and the second, as
part of Volume 2 of
Années de pelerinage, in
1858. Based on the New
Liszt Edition, the
present volume provides a
revised score, a
facsimile reproduction,
and critical notes. The
new editorial preface
orientates the reader in
all the major questions
regarding the work's
genesis.

This
, the ninth of a series
of books begun in 1983,
contains Brian Wren's 36
most recent hymns (2009
to 2012). It is nicely
presented and laid out in
a user-friendly way. The
hymns are divided into
five thematic sections:
Jesus from Cradle to
Cross; Easter Hymns;
Church and Mission;
Praise; and Metrical
Psalms. This last
section, rooted in
(though not bound by) the
Old Testament, is often
influenced by Isaac Watts
and will be of more use
to some than others; it
concludes with a
tremendous rendering of
Psalm 8; a paean of
praise which all will
love, set to a stirring
tune.
Each
section is prefaced with
a single page
introduction listing the
contents and, in some
instances, giving an
interesting insight into
Brian Wren's theology and
thinking which provides
food for contemplation.
Each hymn is printed in
words format with all the
necessary information for
inclusion in an order of
worship. Every hymn is
also printed with full
score music for
accompaniment interlined
with the words. The book
is slightly larger than
A5, and there are various
useful indexes.
The tunes range from
ancient to modern, some
very familiar, including
Candler (better known as
Ye Banks and
Braes). A number are
of a metre where
alternative tunes are
available. Those tunes
which are new vary in
ease of use; some will be
readily picked up, others
would prove challenging
for occasional use in a
small congregation but
could be used as music
group items.
These are hymns which
need to be read as a
whole and require
thought. The words are
chosen with care and
notable as much for those
not used as those
included e.g.: 'Christ,
untameably alive,/
breathe your life upon us
- / Compass, Governor and
Guide, / with us and
beyond us,/ Sky and
Sunlight, / spreading
Vine./ Spring of Living
Water,/ Truth and Wisdom,
Way and Word,/ here, and
then hereafter.' These
hymns will be useful in
worship as either sung or
read pieces, and will
also prove an invaluable
resource for private
devotion.
