Edouard
Lalo's Symphonie
espagnole was heretofore
inadequately edited: the
two first editions (piano
reduction and score)
differ considerably from
one another, since the
composer continued to
hone his work after the
completion of the
engraver's master for the
piano reduction, and he
even made certain
compositional additions.
Christian Rudolf Riedel's
new urtext edition
eliminates all these
inadequacies and
inconsistencies.
Moreover, the editor was
able to base himself for
the first time ever on
the previously unknown
autograph of the solo
part. The discovery of
this source was nothing
less than sensational.
Lalo, who was an
outstanding violinist in
his own right, had
meticulously marked up
his manuscript with the
help of the arrangement
by Pablo de Sarasate, to
whom Lalo had dedicated
the work and entrusted
the world premiere. This
new source situation
allowed for the
preparation of an urtext
edition that corresponds
throughout to the
author's final version.
The composer's piano
part, which sometimes
resembles a short score,
was revised by the
editor, who rendered it
easier to perform and
supplemented the ten
measures that had been
missing until now in the
introduction to the fifth
movement.As benfits this
publishing house, the
handy 6x9 inch score is
meticulously edited and
is a welcome aid to study
of the whole works. (Mary

Even today, concert life

highly virtuosic work
already inspired critics

composer's lifetime;
reported about the
premiere in 1867 was: The
Introduction and the
Rondo capriccioso for the

original and charming,
and Maestro Sarasate, who
was in his element here,
admirably made the most
of it. And a few years
later, a music critic
described the work as a
kind of fantasy waltz in
the Spanish style and
with a most bewitching
effect. After the first
performances in 1867,
despite success, the
work's score and
orchestral parts had
little chance of
publication due to
concert companies'
reluctance. In 1869 the
Paris publishing house G.

an arrangement for violin

composer's friend Georges

Whilst
Horowitz toured across
Russia with violinist
Nathan Milstein, the two
regularly played Pablo de
Sarasate's Carmen Fantasy
op.25, for violin and
orchestra, based on the
opera by Bizet. Horowitz
was bored of the sparse
orchestral reduction and
started writing his own
transcription after
discovering Moritz
Moszkowski's arrangement
of the same piece for
solo piano. Thus emerged
Variations on a Theme
from Bizet's Carmen. The
transcription was made in
1926 and was regularly
played and further
developed by Horowitz
until 1978. Technically
challenging and written
in a virtuoso manner,
this edition is based on
a recording from 1947 and
is suitable for advanced
piano players.
