Danish musician, often
seen as his country's
greatest composer, who
now occupies a
distinguished platform in
the national and cultural
heritage of his native
land. The Carl Nielsen
Edition is an independent
project which aims to
publish all of his
finished works, in the
version last approved by
the composer. The Quartet
for Strings in G minor
(Op. 13) is the earliest
of Nielsen's four
published quartets,
having been composed in
1887-1888, but it was not
published for over a
decade. It comprises four
movements: Allegro
Energico - Andante
Amoroso - Scherzo.

Though
conceived as four
separate movements, my
second string quartet has
a single motif which is
common to them all. This
is the three-note Muss es
sein? from Beethoven's
last quartet, Op. 135.
But whereas Beethoven's
theme is notated G E A
flat, thus giving it an F
minor connotation, I have
sued an alternative
spelling - G E G sharp -
which suggests an
ambiguous E minor-major.
This ambiguity, in fact,
becomes the tonal basis
of the whole work, only
to be resolved at the end
of the final movement.
Each movement begins with
a variant of the basic
motif on the cello. The
first has the original
form of the theme, while
the second has a
majorised version which
is also expressed as a
chord. The third
movement, with its
scherzoid middle section,
reverts to the
major-minor ambiguity of
the first, and the finale
begins with the majorised
version as an ostinato
accompaniment on
pizzicato cello. The slow
movement is sub-titled In
memoriam DSCH and
concludes with a
quotation of
Shostakovich's motto - D
E flat C B - which is
basically the same as
Beethoven's with the
addition of one note.
This is not to imply that
the work contains no
other thematic material.
One important theme, a
rising fifth and a
second, is also common to
three of the movements,
and is ultimately derived
from my first quartet,
Op. 1 of 27 years
earlier, to which this
second contribution to
the form is in many ways
like a sequel. Like the
earlier work, too, this
quartet is dedicated to
my wife.

discovery of a lost
source to AntonÃn
Dvorák's
â??Nocturneâ? in B
major op. 40 provides new
insights into the genesis
of the composition and
the composer's intended
final form of this
lyrical little piece for
string
orchestra.
The
musical material of what
was later to be named
â??Nocturneâ? was
initially elaborated in
the String Quartet in E
minor; subsequently it
was used in the original
version of the String
Quintet in G major as its
second movement. However
Dvorák then extracted
it again, expanding and
editing it afresh. The
final result was the
â??Nocturneâ? for
string orchestra (two
violins, viola,
violoncello, double
bass). The first edition
was published by Bote and
Bock in 1883.
The
authorized second copy of
the work that had served
as a template for the
first printing was
discovered by the editor
Jonáš Hájek in a
privately owned
collection. This enabled
him to resolve the
several ambiguities
caused by the existence
of multiple versions and
to unveil the authentic
â??Nocturneâ?.

quintet and his nonet for
winds and strings were
often performed and were
very successful works
during his lifetime.
Their density, but also
the delicateness of the
scherzo movements are in
the tradition of Schumann
and Mendelssohn and these
traits are combined with
Rheinberger's sense for
the clear, defined
structure of the
movements and solid
contrapuntal writing. The
octet for winds and
strings is published here
for the first time and
the nonet, which is
actually a reworking of
this octet that
Rheinberger undertook
some twenty years later,
is also published in this
volume. Rheinberger made
major changes from the
original octet and he
added two new movements
to the nonet. Both works
show especially the
interest and pleasure
which he derived from the
variety in the
differentiation of colors
in ensemble playing. The
Thema mit Veranderungen
op. 93, which until now
has been known as a work
for string quartet, is
published here with the
double bass part which
Rheinberger later
added.
