English. The first
known canon of European
art music, now in the
British Museum in London,
is preserved in a
thirteenth-century
manusript from the
English abbey in Reading:
This is the so-called
summer canon, whose
verses greet the advent
of summer. An
accompanying note
elucidates the artistic
layer-like construction
of the sound structure: a
two-voice foundation of
bell-like, swinging
pendulum tones supports
an upper structure of
four voices which enter
at equal time intervals.
The note terms the canon
rota * round -, which
makes reference to the
turning, circling
movement of the
constantly pulsating
sound. The circular
figure originates in a
vital, ages-old moving
force in music-making,
and it demands a
dance-like execution. But
the canon is also,
through the interaction
of the strictly ordered
voice entries,
convivially bound musical
form. Carl Orff was able
to choose no better
fitting musical form for
the Greetings to Youth at
the Olympic Games 1972 in
Munich than the medieval
rota. In the connexion of
the singing voices with
the Orff instruments,
today in world-wide use,
a testimony of European
tradition sounds in a
living present. $5.99 - Voir plus => Acheter

9790007171391. What
would love be without
music - or music without
love! Many couples
associate unforgettable
beautiful hours, a first
meeting, or first kiss
with a particular song.
And composers have always
been inspired and
stimulated by love, have
celebrated romantic love
and longing from afar,
secret love, and
jealousy. In her
selection of 80 songs
from seven centuries,
Mirjam James evokes this
tremendous feeling with
the most beautiful songs
ranging from medieval
courtly songs, through
Beethoven's Ich liebe
dich, to the Beatles song
And I love her. Many of
the songs come from
German and English
language traditions, but
what would such a book be
without the fire of
southern Europe or a dose
of French charm, without
the moving melodies of
cool northern climes, or
the melancholy songs of
the Russian soul? This
beautifully-produced song
book is illustrated with
the sumptuous paintings
of Gustav Klimt, for whom
love was one of the great
themes of his life. The
song book contains a CD
with recordings of all
the songs in instrumental
versions so you can sing
along with the pieces and
get to know them. A piano
book is published
alongside the song book,
containing all the songs
in idiomatic, playable
accompaniments. Whether
it's for an engagement or
a wedding, for
Valentine's Day or an
anniversary, Liebeslieder
makes an ideal present
for those newly in love
or still in love, and who
also love music. $39.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 2 to 3 weeks

Sacerdos Magnus (Behold
the Great Priest) comes
from the early European
tradition of plainchant.
Bruckner's setting of the
responsory, originally
scored for eight-part
mixed choir, organ and
three trombones, brings
certain medieval
qualities to an otherwise
Romantic-era composition.
This transcription for
10-part brass choir is
appropriate for
intermediate level and
above and attempts to
retain the majesty,
power, and beauty of the
original piece. It should
be approached as a choral
piece: connected and
fluid. The harmonic
language is essentially
triadic; great care
should be taken in the
tuning of each chord
throughout the piece.
Instrumentation is for: 3
Trumpets in B-flat, 2
Horns, 3 Trombones,
Euphonium and Tuba.
Listen to the live
performance by a young
group of musicians
conducted by Dr. Paul
Stevens, Professor of
Horn at KU. $42.50 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 2 to 3 weeks

the abbey records quite
astounding achievements

the harsh treatment of
delinquents. The order
had its own school, in
which children were

walls and were only
allowed to eat from the

The medieval witch trials

interpreted as the
devil's work. The result:
a show trial that
sentenced the dancers to
death by fire. All in the

abbey and come right into
the brothers' chambers.
In a blind fury, all the
pipes of the abbey organ
are torn out, icons
beheaded with swords and
brothers beaten death
while numerous buildings
are set on fire. The
abbey church is in
flames. A frantic and
desperate escape begins.
Abbot Bordier and a
handful of brothers make
their getaway via the
River Saar, adjacent to
the abbey, to the
neighbouring village of
Bous. They survive, but
their life--the
Premonstratensian
abbey--is destroyed.
While they flee towards
Prague and the sanctuary
of the Strahov Monastery,
the abbey at Wadgassen is
razed to the ground and
becomes a stone quarry.
The desert blooms once
more, however. A few
short decades later, a
glasswork arises from the
foundations of the abbey.
As peace returns to the
region, it brings jobs
and a new vision for its
people. $198.00 - Voir plus => Acheter

Language:
Spanish. This song
is a popular 'Cueca
brava,' also known as
'Cueca Chilenera.' The
'Cueca' was designated a
na tional dance in Chile
since 1979 and it has
been danced throughout
this country since the
early 19th century, both
in the countryside and in
the cities. The styles of
the 'Cuecas' are
different according to
the nature of the texts
and to traditions of each
region. The origin of the
'Cueca' is unclear, but
certainly it developed in
the Viceroyalty of Peru,
fi rst as a dance called
the 'zamacueca,' which in
turn originated from the
'jota' and the
'fandango.' It is danced
in couples who dance
apart from each other
while waving red scarves
and moving in circles.
The musicologist Carlos
Vega writes: it is
possible to consider the
'Cueca' as a parody of
courtship between a cock
and a hen: the scarves
could symbolize feathers
or ridges within a
choreography that is
characterized by loose
interdependent partners.
In describing the 'Cueva'
another musicologist,
Samuel Claro, explains
that the choreography
recalls the ancient or
medieval tournaments and
derives from the
pantomime of love ... It
is a festive and cheerful
dance, accompanied by
guitars, harp, accordion
and percussion
instruments, although it
is written mostly in
minor keys. The rhythm
combines measures of 6/8
and 3/4. $4.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 2 to 3 weeks
