Vivaldi's
12 concertos were first
published in 1711 by
Roger in Amsterdam. These
8 elegant part-books
helped to establish
Vivaldi's reputation
throughout Europe and
provided the rules from
which such writers as
Quantz, Marcello and
Mattheson judged and
advised other composers.
Much imitated, the
concertos continued to
influence the works of
later composers and
indeed J. S. Bach.

Russian
composer, Alexander
Glazounov (1865-1936) was
director of the Saint
Petersburg Conservatory
for a large part of his
career. As a prolific
composer, his works were
always well-received,
Concerto in E-flat for
Alto Saxophone and String
Orchestra being no
exception. Glazounov's
compositional style was
particularly significant
due to his successful
reconciliation of
nationalism and
cosmopolitanism in
Russian music. Composed
in 1934, a typical
performance of
Concerto in E-flat for
Alto Saxophone and String
Orchestra last about
fourteen minutes and is
played without a pause.
The work is highly
romantic and remains part
of the standard Saxophone
repertoire. For all
advanced saxophonists,
Glazounov's Concerto
in E-flat ensures a
riveting and exciting
performance for players
and audiences alike.

The Cello
Concerto is in four main
sections that are played
without a break. As with
most of my work, the
music throughout is
generated from the ideas
presented in the fi rst
few bars, and these ideas
and their variants appear
freely in the different
sections. Recurring
material and references
to earlier sections are
used deliberately to
create not only a sense
of unity but also an
impression of familiarity
that aspires to induce a
dream-like perception of
the passing music, a kind
of spiral. The piece
opens with a slow
introduction that
gradually quickens into
the first main section,
an allegro. The form of
the second section, which
is in a lighter mood, is
based on an early 13th
century verse form, the
Sestina, which consists
of six stanzas of
sixlines each, followed
by an envoi. The words
that end each line in the
first stanza are rotated
in a strictly prescribed
pattern* to give the
line-endings of the
remaining stanzas; in
this adaptation, each
line consists of four
bars, and the repetitions
ensue according to the
plan. The intricate
repetition inherent in
this form can also be
seen as a form of spiral.
The third section is an
extended slow movement
interrupted by a quicker
episode that refers to
the fi rst section.
Generally lighter and in
a similar vein to the
second section, the final
section includes a
reference to the slow
movement before returning
to the lighter music that
ends the piece. This work
is dedicated to Natalie
Clein.

F.A. Rosler
(Antonio Rosetti), a
Bohemian by birth, worked
as court music director
in
Ludwigslust/Mecklenburg.
He wrote 14 flute
concertos altogether the
most important of which
is the concerto G major,
Op. 14. The expanded head
movement combines the
sonata form with the
ritornello technique of
the concerto grosso.
Right at the beginning,
the basses of the
Mannheimer-Walzermotiv
make it clear that Rosler
knows how to use
effectively the
orchestral technique of
his time. Despite all
motivic and thematic as
well as harmonic
abundance, -Rosler
achieves in this concerto
an almost natural musical
unity.

His concertos
justifiably rank among
the milestones of solo
music accompanied by
orchestra. In Viennese
Classicism, piano music
flourished thanks to
innovations in the
instrumental technique,
and even Mozart fully
exploited the advantages
of the fortepiano action
over the rigid sound of
the harpsichord in his
works.Piano Concerto No.
25 is Mozart's longest
concerto. The harmonic
structure, the continuous
change between major and
minor, the witty
dialoguing between solo
and orchestra, the strong
contrapuntal saturation,
the frequent use of the
pedal point as well as
the overflowing melodic
abundance give the work a
character all its
own.

Piano
concertos combine two
elements: pure playing
and full poetic
expression. Virtuosity
and romance. Pianistic
brilliance, educated in
the works in the stile
brillant, brought to
perfection, but at the
same time - a farewell.
Both are forms of direct
expression of the
personality of the
composer, which showed
itself in them for the
first time with so much
strength and is
manifested in a group of
characteristics of
forming Chopin's
individual style. Piano
Concerto in F minor In
terms of size,
substantially smaller
than the E minor concerto
and also a different kind
of expression: more
lyrical, drawn in
delicate pastel colours.
Especially famous is the
second movement, the
Larghetto, which Chopin
wrote under the
inspiration of his first
love. Critical
source-edition edited by
Jan Ekier and Pawel
Kaminski based on
manuscripts, copies
approved by Chopin
himself, and first
editions. Its purpose is
to present the works of
Chopin in authentic
form.

Thanks to
its skilful combination
of Romantic melody and
sparkling virtuosity,
KoussevitzkyÂ’s Double
Bass Concerto op. 3 has
been one of the most
popular works of its
genre since its Moscow
premiere in 1905. No
wonder, for the virtuoso
double bass player
Koussevitzky had composed
it for his very own
instrument. As early as
1906/07 a first piano
reduction was published
in Moscow, followed by a
second in 1910 in
Leipzig. However, both
contain so many mistakes
in the solo part that
there is still
uncertainty about the
correct musical text in
many passages to this
day. The double bass
player Tobias Glöckler
has therefore prepared
his Urtext edition using
several sources: as well
as the manuscript
performance material and
the piano reductions
published during the
composer's lifetime, he
has also studied
recordings with
Koussevitzky as soloist -
thereby finally producing
a
thoroughly-researchedUrte
xt edition of the
orchestral score and
piano reduction of this
classic of the double
bass literature. As with
all double bass concertos
published by Henle
Publishers, this edition
also contains the piano
reduction by Christoph
Sobanski in two keys (E
minor and F sharp minor)
for performance with solo
or orchestral tuning.

faster and slower, wildly

Rihards
Dubra (born Latvia, 1964)
wrote his piano concerto
– Liepaja
Concerto No. 3
– in 2012. A
33-minute work for solo
piano and symphony
orchestra comprising
triple wind and brass,
percussion, harp and
strings, the concerto
starts with a mournful
piano melody. It has an
elemental beauty –
we hear water in the
sonorities of harps and
chime-bells, earth in the
rhythmic formulae, and
fire in his colourful
harmonic sequences
– ending with a
majestic and vibrant
conclusion.

My Concerto
for Orchestra (2007) is a
twenty-minute work in
which different sections
of the orchestra, as well
as individual solos and
duos from within the
orchestra, are
highlighted as the music
unfolds. The work
continues my interest in
two-movement forms that
began with my Cello
Concerto (1991), and was
later developed in
Sortilege (1996) and
Symphony (Broken Consort)
(2004). In these works,
and in the Concerto for
Orchestra, each movement
is given equal weight and
importance with the
second developing earlier
material and taking it in
new directions.The
two-movement form of the
Concerto for Orchestra
derives from a symphonic
sonata structure,
reshaping the traditional
four-movement form and
combining this with
aspects of sonata form, a
tradition that goes back
to Liszt, Schoenberg and
Sibelius:1st movement (i)
exposition of ideas -
dramatic and sudden (ii)
scherzo and development 1
- resolute2nd movement
(iii) adagio - calm and
unhurried (iv)
development 2 with
recapitulation - intense
and energeticThe Concerto
for Orchestra was
commissioned by the
Musikalische Akademie des
Nationaltheatre-Orchester
s Mannheim with the
support of Die Landesbank
Baden-Wurttemberg for its
first two performances on
31st March and 1st April
2008 conducted by
Friedemann Layer. The
score is dedicated in
friendship and admiration
to Ronald Zollman.John
