Roost to write a work to
mark the bicentenary of
the Tyrolean fight for
freedom, which was
settled in 1809. Various
musical elements reflect
this historical event.
First, a hymn-like
section rings out, based
on melodic fragments from
the ‘Tiroler
Landeshymne’ (by
Leopold Knebelsberger),
which intertwine in a
counterpoint-like
arrangement. The second
passage is more bellicose
in character, and mirrors
the fight of the
Tyroleans - under the
inspiring leadership of
freedom fighter Andreas
Hofer (1767-1810) -
against Bavarian, French
and Italian troops. Next,
a broad, chorale-style
melodyappears again:
here, the imposing beauty
of nature in Tyrol, and
the amiable, lively
temperament of the people
who live in this
mountainous region, are
glorified.This is neither
a programmatic work
around an historical
reconstruction, nor a
politically inspired
work: it is a combination
of factual and cultural
components, with an
artistic and sonorous
character. The use of the
flugelhorn in particular
gives Tirol Terra
Fortis its
‘couleur
locale’: for this
beautiful instrument can
invariably be found in
the Austrian wind band.
The commissioning music
society had therefore
specifically asked the
composer to incorporate
the instrument in this
work. It certainly
enhances the already
extensive colour palette
of the modern concert
band!

bustle of the popular ski
resort, before the two
opening themes return in
reverse order to bring
this musical sight-seeing
excursion to a
close.

Symphony for
symphonic wind band is an

work, thematically
complex, with a rich
orchestration, but also
great beauty. The
composer was keen to draw
a parallel between an
atlas, where all the
geographical maps of the
world are collected in
one book, and his score,
which brings together all
the facets of his musical
style. Despite being
written without any
breaks, the symphony is
structured around three
main ideas. It is based
upon a series of notes
that will become the very
essence of the piece, its
building blocks. Like the
works of composers of
serial music, the series
appears in different
forms - melodic and
harmonic, thematic or
simply asan
accompaniment. With its
wealth of rhythms and
contrapuntal power, this
piece is a compelling
concerto for orchestra.
The Orchestre de la
Police Nationale was
the first to be attracted
to this work and
premiered it with
excellence under the
baton of composer Thierry
Deleruyelle.

Fort Fincastle
was built in the Bahamas
in 1793, constructed in
the form of a ship’s
bow so as to fool passing
ships. The opening bars
of Fincastle Overture
reflect the form of the
magnificent stronghold,
before a heroic theme is
heard in which the fort
comes under repeated
attack, and just about
survives!

Fincastle werd in 1793 in
Nassau gebouwd, de
hoofdstad van de Bahamas.
De oprichter ervan, Lord
Dunmore, gaf het fort een
bijzonder vorm: een
cirkelvormig gebouw met
een puntige uitbouw, in

was built in the Bahamas
in 1793, constructed in
the form of a ship’s
bow so as to fool passing
ships. The opening bars
of Fincastle Overture
reflect the form of the
magnificent stronghold,
before a heroic theme is
heard in which the fort
comes under repeated
attack, and just about
survives!

certain. In this three-
movement arrangement,

respecting the beautiful
simplicity of the
original tune.

by Thomas Moore
(1779-1852) and the
melody is a traditional
air titled The Groves of
Blarney. The German
composer Friedrich von
Flotow (1812-1883)

work that is still
regularly performed. The

In the programme note for
the premiere the composer
wrote: I am always
impressed by the
expansive earth and
sparkling ocean scenery
when I come to Kyushu. I
have met many local
people here and they are
all expressive and
energetic. I wrote this
dramatic piece to convey
to the whole of Japan the
memory of my experience
here, swaying in the west
wind. I wrote this,
hoping that the Self
Defense Force will forge
closer ties with the
community through this
piece. Eastern drama felt
in the west
wind!

Thine Eyes can be
traced to English poet
Ben Jonson, a
contemporary of
Shakespeare. The
melody’s origin,
on the other hand, is not
certain. In this three-
movement arrangement,
Philip Sparke provides
the soloist with plenty
of substance while
respecting the beautiful
simplicity of the
original tune.
Vooral bij jonge
musici is dit oude
Engelse lied van
onbekende herkomst
buitengewoon populair.
Met zijn arrangement voor
trompet en blaasorkest
dat uit drie coupletten
bestaat werkte Philip
Sparke de solomelodie

of Summer is a popular
Irish folksong. The
original text was written
by Thomas Moore
(1779-1852) and the
melody is a traditional
air titled The Groves of
Blarney. The German
composer Friedrich von
Flotow (1812-1883)
cleverly used this song
in his opera Martha, a
light-hearted, successful
work that is still
regularly performed. The
melancholy character of
The Last Rose of Summer
still appeals to many
people in the present day
and this arrangement by
Wil van der Beek
certainly does justice to
the beauty of the melody.

On May 13th 1106 the
count Van Leuven was
appointed duke of
Brabant. This was the
birth of the duchy of
Brabant. For centuries
this duchy, situated in
the heart of the
Netherlands, was the
primary of the seventeen
provinces in the
Lowlands. Brabant formed
with it’s capital
cities Brussels, Leuven,
Antwerp and
‘s-Hertogenbosch the
focal point for politics,
culture and economy. The
revolution against Spain
(1566-1648) caused a
fracture between the
North and South. The old
duchy was divided into a
Dutch and Belgian part.
Even though each had
their own historical
background, the bond
forged in the past was
partially keptalive. To
this day we still have a
duke of Brabant.
Brabantia Aeterna takes
you on a musical journey
through 900 years of
Brabant history. A
fascinating journey
portraying war and peace,
love and grief,
prosperity and adversity,
development and
deterioration. Listen to
how monks chanted, bells
tolled and churches were
built. Or take the
thirteenth and fourteenth
centuries with their
bustling markets,
builders of cities or the

hoping that the Self
Defense Force will forge
closer ties with the
community through this
piece. Eastern drama felt
