Reflections
on an Old Japanese Folk
Song is based on the
tune Suiryo-Bushi,
which comes from the
shamisen tradition and
opens with two
contrasting statements of
the melody followed by
several variations each
in an own style based
uponthe same tune, or
sometimes only fragments
of it. In one of the
variants, the pentatonic
scale is used. The final
section is in the form of
a scherzo, which
eventually forms the
accompaniment to a final
presentation of the folk
tune.

Based on
the traditional Japanese
tune
â??Suiryo-Bushi,â?
Reflections on an Old
Japanese Folk Song
opens with two
contrasting statements of
the melody - first
sparsely presented by the
woodwinds and then in a
harmonized version played
by the full band. This is
followed by a lively
section based on
pentatonic melodies that
characterize the folk
tune. The following
slower variation first
centers around a
plaintive English horn
melody made up of
sections of the original
tune, and later presents
the opening phrases of
â??Suiryo-Bushiâ?
against an intensely
florid accompaniment. The
final section is in the
form of a scherzo that
eventually forms the
accompaniment to a final
presentation of the folk

dquo; an Irish folk song
that appears towards the
end of Prelude on an
Irish Folk Tune, is a
hymn tune version of the
much older folk melody
“The Banks of the
Bann.” In this
composition, fragments of
this melody are
introduced, hinting at
what is to come later in
the piece, but another
folk-like tune is
predominant. This theme
later acts as a descant
to “Slane”
when it finally appears.
Add a little Sparke
sparkle to any concert
with this lovely
interlude. Duration:

success through the rock
’n’ roll
singer Ritchie Valens,
however, who in 1958 gave
the song his own
incomparable treatment.
And it’s this
version that the
experienced arranger
Naohiro Iwai took as the
basis fort his wind
orchestra version.

is eigenlijk een oud

bekendheid verkreeg het
vrolijke danslied door de

manifestations of folk

To create
the musical material of
this medley, the arranger
drew upon the rich
arsenal of Russian folk
songs and dances.
Familiar traditional
tunes have been combined
with less well-known, but
certainly no less
interesting
manifestations of folk
music. In this attractive
arrangement the following
melodies are featured:
The Volga Boatmen
Song, The Jolly
Chap, The Red
Sarafan, The
Forest Glade, The
Nightingale and the
Gopak.

in International Schools,
Albion Heritage is a folk
song fantasy based on
tunes from various parts
of the British Isles. It
opens with Brighton Camp
(an English version of
The Girl I Left Behind
Me), which is treated to
a variety of twists and
turns. The slower section
is based on the Scottish
tune O Waly Waly (also
known as The Water Is
Wide), which dates from
the early 18th century.
This is followed by a
robust setting of Men of
Harlech, which is said to
describe the repeated
sieges of Harlech Castle
in the 15th century.

Klezmer
music originated in the
‘shtetl’
(villages) and the
ghettos of Eastern
Europe, where itinerant
Jewish troubadours, known
as
‘klezmorim’,
had performed at
celebrations,
particularly weddings,
since the early Middle
Ages. Since the 16th
century, lyrics had been
added to klezmer music,
due to the
‘badkhn’
(the master of ceremony
at weddings), to the
‘Purimshpil’
(the play of Esther at
Purim) and to traditions
of the Yiddish theatre,
but the term gradually
became synonymous with
instrumental music,
particularly featuring
the violin and clarinet.
In recent years it has
again become very popular
and in A Klezmer Karnival
Philip Sparke has used
three contrasting
traditionaltunes to form
a suite that will bring a
true karnival atmosphere
to any concert.
De wortels van de
klezmerstijl liggen in
wereldlijke melodieën,
populaire dansen, het
joodse
‘hazanut’
(cantorijmuziek) en de
‘nigunim’,
de melodieën die
worden gereciteerd door
de ‘hasidim’
(orthodoxe joden). De
term werd in de loopder
tijden synoniem aan
instrumentale muziek,
waarin met name de viool
en klarinet de hoofdrol
spelen. Voor A Klezmer
Karnival zijn drie
traditionele melodieën
gebruikt: Choson kale
mazel tov, een
bruiloftsdans,Freylekh

kringdans, en
Sherele, een
Duitse
herdersdans.

p Sparke verarbeitete in
seinem Werk drei
unterschiedliche
traditionelle
Klezmermelodien: einen
Hochzeitstanz mit
Glückwünschen
für Braut und
Bräutigam, einen
Rundtanz und einen so
genannten Scherentanz.
Daraus entstand A
Klezmer Karnival, das
die dem Klezmer eigene
Mischung aus
Fröhlichkeit und
Melancholie ausgezeichnet
wiedergibt. Ein ebenso
abwechslungsreiches wie
stimmungsvolles
Konzertwerk, mit dem Ihr
Blasorchester
überzeugen wird!

Kentish Dances
was commissioned by the
Bromley Youth Music Trust
for the Bromley Youth
Concert Band - Michael
Purton, conductor.
Bromley is in Kent, the
most southeasterly of all
the English counties.
Kent has a rich folk
history and, like many
parts of the country, its
own home-grown dance
tunes. What has become
known in England as
country dancing became
popular during the
Elizabethan period
amongst the middle and
upper classes, who
preferred the style to
the more formal galliards
and pavans of the royal
court. This suite is
based on three dance
tunes that originated in
Kent; the first is a sort
of moto perpetuo based on
two lively 6/8 tunes,
Dover Castle and The Fair
Maid of Wickham. The
middle movement uses the
rather sombre Blackheath,
contrasting it with the
charming and apt Bromley
Bells. The finale uses
the sprightly We Are All
Right at Canterbury and
Ramsgate Pier, using the
lilting Northdown Waltz
as a lyrical
contrast.
