The
28-year-old Jon Lord,
with no experience at all
of writing for orchestra,
composed this work in
only three months in the
lead-up to its premiere
with the Royal
Philharmonic Orchestra
and Malcolm Arnold. It
was his first workfor

career as both a
classical composer and a
founding member of Deep

rich in youthful
invention, sound in
structure, and
sophisticated in
craftsmanship. It broke
new ground at thetime,
and seems only to have
grown in stature across
the intervening years.
The full score appears

Tam
O'Shanter was first
performed at a Henry Wood
Promenade Concert on 17
August 1955, with Malcolm
Arnold conducting the
Royal Philharmonic
Orchestra. It was
received with tremendous
enthusiasm, and was,
without doubt, the most
popular novelty during
the 1955 season of
Promenade Concerts. The
composer is at pains to
point out that, whereas
the earlier overture
Beckus the Dandipratt is
not descriptive but
merely a musical
impression, Tam O'Shanter
is very definitely
programme music.

German.
The
piano-accompanied Lied is
undoubtedly the main
genre of Pauline
Viardot-Garcia's oeuvre.
With this volume, we
present settings of
German texts by such
poets as Ludwig Uhland,
Eduard Morike, Johann
Wolfgang von Goethe,
Heinrich Heine, Emanuel
Geibel, Ludwig Rellstab
and Richard Pohl. Except
for the Uhland settings,
these German Lieder were
written between 1862 and
1871 during Viardot's
Baden-Baden period, when
she shifted the focus of
her activities from
singing to composing and
teaching. Here she
worked, among other
things, on the poetry of
Eduard Morike, which she
called the greatest and
most genuine in all
German poetry after
Goethe.One of her first
published songs was the
setting of the Uhland
poem Des Knaben Berglied.
Accompanying herself on
the piano, she performed
it in 1838 on her first
concert tour of Germany.
A performance of the song
at the Leipzig Gewandhaus
prompted Robert Schumann
to remark: She showed
three talents here
[composition, singing and
piano playing], each of
which would grace its
artist. Through her
music, Viardot brings the
creatures in the poems to
life, tracing their
different characters and
inner states, thus giving
the texts a new level of
interpretation.

‘As
Steals the Morn’ (The
Cheerful Man, the
Thoughtful Man and the
Moderate Man), was
composed in 1740. It is
described as a
‘Pastoral Ode’ and
based on the poetry of
John Milton. Many of the
arias which occur in
Handel’s operas and
oratorios are suitable
for concert performance,

These songs
by Emile Naoumoff are
squarely in the tradition
of French lied
composition such as by
Gabriel Faure. Here,
Naoumoff chose texts by
late 19th-century French
lyricists: Auguste
Villiers de l'Isle-Adam,
Emile Verhaeren, Charles
Baudelaire and
Rene-Francois
Sully-Prudhomme.In their
elegance and suppleness,
the four songs sound
typically French. As they
are all easy to sing and
have not been composed
'against' the voice, they
are perfectly suited for
both music lessons and
concert
programmes.Naoumoff was
born in Sofia in 1962. At
the age of eight, he
began his career as a
pianist and composer; he
was a student of Nadia
Boulanger for ten years
until her death. At the
age of ten, Naoumoff
composed and performed
his own piano concerto
under the direction of
Yehudi Menuhin. He then
received numerous awards
and prizes and gave
performances as highly
acclaimed pianist. Today,
Naoumoff lives and works
as an associate professor
at the School of Music of
the Indiana University at
Bloomington. He gives
master classes in the
USA, Europe and Japan and
is director of a music
academy.
