Music from the Motion Picture Soundtrack for Violin Solo. Par BOLOGNE JOSEPH. Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, was born Christmas Day, 1745, on the island of Guadeloupe, then a French colony, in the Caribbean Sea. The son of a wealthy plantation owner and a slave, he rose to unimaginable heights in French society thanks to his excellence in many things including math, literature, and fencing, but most of all, music. He rose to become one of the most popular violinists and composers in France, even hired to provide music lessons for the imperious Marie Antoinette who would become the last queen of France. Bologne's amazing life story came to life in the 2022 film Chevalier. Our matching folio includes original works by Bologne as well as violin solo arrangements of the score by Kris Bowers and featuring Violin Duel by Michael Abels. The book also includes a short biography of Bologne's life story. / Date parution : 2023-10-31/ Recueil / Violon

Émile Sauret, violin virtuoso, teacher and composer, was admired by some of the greatest composers of his time, including Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Bruch, Wagner, Grieg and Mahler. He gave numerous concerts with Liszt, Rubinstein, and Moszkowski, and often played duets with Sarasate. He is predominantly remembered for the fiendishly difficult cadenza he composed to Paganini?s first violin concerto. Sauret?s 24 Etudes Caprices for solo violin are a substantial virtuoso journey through every major and minor key. Written while he was a professor of violin at the Royal Academy of Music in London, they are notable for the exceptional variety of filigree detail and variation in nuance, dynamic, fingering, bowing and phrasing, creating etudes far more substantial than is typical in this genre. Unavailable since their first publication early in the 20th century, the Etudes Caprices are edited by leading violinist and Sauret specialist, Nazrin Rashidova, who has made the first complete recording of the Etudes Caprices, performing them on Sauret?s own Stradivarius. Using the original Simrock edition as a basis, this edition supplements Sauret?s original bowings and fingerings with Rashidova?s own suggestions. An extensive preface gives further insights into performance and contextualizes the life of the composer. / Date parution : 2022-11-29/ Répertoire / Violon

Whitcomb Ed (Compiled). Par WHITCOMB ED. Canadian fiddle music receives the credit and recognition it deserves in this lively collection of tunes from virtually every province and ethnic group in Canada. Originally published in 1990, this project is the result of generous donations by numerous fiddlers and fans of fiddle music. In addition to the preservation and popularization of this folk music form, the contributors shared these common goals in this endeavor: composer recognition, folk music revitalization in Canada and abroad, acknowledgement of the violin and its own origins in the development of fiddle music and its place in Canadian society, note reading and chording, and to pay tribute to many great fiddlers. This revised edition features contributions of 200 of the best tunes from the first printing as well as 200 new tunes. They consist of hornpipes, strathspeys, polkas, waltzes, calypsos, reels, clogs, two-steps, jigs, airs, breakdowns, schottishes, marches, rags, and laments. A bibliography and the background of each composer is included. / Niveau : Débutant à Intermédiaire / Canadian - Songbooks / Recueil / Violon

Without any doubt J.S. Bach?s cycle of the three Sonatas and Partitas BWV 1001-1006 represents one of the pinnacles of classical European music. According to C.P.E. Bach a contemporary voice stated that there was ?nothing more accomplished in order to become a good violinist? than his father?s works. The cycle reflects the entire harmonic and polyphonic musical universe of Bach?s time, so masterfully composed that it can be rendered within the limited framework of but a single instrument the violin. The new publication of the Sonatas and Partitas BWV 1001-1006 (BA 5256) constitutes a complete revision of our older edition (BA 5116). The musical text has been edited by Peter Wollny and represents the most up-to-date state of research as published in the New Bach Edition Revised (NBArev), volume BA 5937-01. The edition is mainly based on Bach?s unusually clear autograph which is considered among the most beautiful manuscripts by the composer. All relevant secondary sources have been taken into consideration in order to clarify ambiguities. These include five contemporary copies, including one by Anna Magdalena Bach, and four manuscripts from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The musical text has been newly engraved with a clear and generous layout, whereby page turns and pagination have been retained from the previous edition. This allows the straightforward navigation between a copy of the previous and this new edition. The detailed Preface (Ger/Eng) provides information on the genesis of the Sonatas and Partitas, their context and the sources. Critical Edition Violin Solo Part. Par KORNGOLD ERICH WOLFGANG. This new edition...(+)
Critical Edition Violin Solo Part. Par KORNGOLD ERICH WOLFGANG. This new edition of the violin solo part to the Korngold Violin Concerto in D Major is the first-ever to include Jascha Heifetz's performance notations, edited by Endre Granat, one of his star proteges. Born in Austria, Korngold was forced into US exile by the annexation of Austria by the Nazis. He vowed to give up composing anything other than film music until Hitler was defeated. With the end of World War II, he retired from films to concentrate on music for the concert hall. The violin concerto was the first such work that Korngold wrote following some initial persuasion from violinist and fellow émigré Bronislaw Huberman. Korngold was hurt by the assumption that he had sold his integrity to Hollywood. He was thus determined to prove himself with a work that combined vitality and superb craftsmanship. Korngold composed his Violin Concerto in D major, Op.35, in 1945, dedicating it to Alma Mahler, the widow of his childhood mentor, Gustav Mahler. The work was premiered on February, 15 1947 by Jascha Heifetz and the St. Louis Symphony under conductor Vladimir Golschmann. It received the most enthusiastic ovation in St. Louis concert history at the time. On March 30, 1947, Heifetz played the concerto in Carnegie Hall with the New York Philharmonic conducted by Efrem Kurtz: the broadcast performance was recorded on transcription discs. Heifetz's performance launched the work into the standard repertoire, and it quickly became Korngold's most popular piece. Concerning Heifetz's performance of the work, the composer wrote, In spite of the demand for virtuosity in the finale, the work with its many melodic and lyric episodes was contemplated more for a Caruso than for a Paganini. It is needless to say how delighted I am to have my concerto performed by Caruso and Paganini in one person: Jascha Heifetz./ Répertoire / Violon

to the violin concerto by Gyorgy Ligeti. Par ADES THOMAS. In a conversation with the violinist Peter Herresthal, we touched on the “invitation” in the score of Ligeti’s Violin concerto to provide a cadenza for the work. Peter suggested that I answer this invitation and I was happy to accept. I followed all the composer’s directions exactly: the cadenza may use material from all five movements, and should be of “hectic” character throughout. I also aimed to write a cadenza of which the closing orchestral coda would be an inevitable result. (Thomas Adès)
The cadenza can also be composed by the soloist and can last up to 1-2 minutes. It should be hectic throughout (continuation of the appassionata agitato molto), but can incorporate melodic material ad lib. from all five movements. Towards the end, the tempo should be prestissimo with alternating arco and left hand pizz. in mad virtuosity. The cadenza has no real end and is suddenly interrupted by the orchestra at R (as agreed between soloist and conductor). This interruption occurs suddenly 'as if unprepared'. The soloist should at this point be playing in high positions (on the top string) at maximum velocity. The solo violin abruptly falls silent on the entry of the high woodblock. Sir Edward Elgar was an English composer, many of whose works have entered the British and international classical concert repertoire. Among his best-known compositions are orchestral works including the Enigma Variations, the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, concertos for Violin and Cello, and two symphonies. He was appointed Master of the King's Musick in 1924.Composed in 1892, Etudes Caracteristiques For Violin Op.24 is dedicated to the preeminent Hungarian Jewish Violin virtuoso, and Elgar's former Violin teacher between 1877-1878, Adolphe Pollitzer. Pollitzer believed that, as a violinist, Elgar had the potential to be one of the leading soloists in the country, but Elgar himself, having heard leading virtuosi at London concerts, felt his own Violin playing lacked a full enough tone, and he abandoned his ambitions to be a soloist. / Violon

Edizione critica di Italo Vescovo. Par PAGANINI NICCOLO. Paganini's Tema variato for solo violin (M.S. 82) is a work dating from the composer's juvenile period, written between the end of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth, a period in which works such as his (M.S. 1) for violin and guitar, the posthumous 'Grande concerto' (E minor concerto M.S. 75), and Inno patriottico for violin (M.S. 81) were composed. Organised as a theme followed by seven variations, the piece showcases a decidedly virtuosic musical writing, with numerous technical gestures that seem to prelude the Capricci op. 1 (rapid arpeggiated passages, wide leaps, double stops, etc.) together with a search for unusual effects, such as 'organetto” and 'flagioletto” (the use of simple or double harmonics). The Tema variato is a significant work both in terms of its historical-instrumental importance and its musical quality, where the carefully thought-out organization of the variations, each with its own distinctive character, is evident.
This critical edition is based on the manuscript kept in the Historical Archives of the Municipality of Genoa (ms. 1793) compared with the 1999 Suvini Zerboni edition. / Niveau : Avancé / Répertoire / Violon

Written in 1890, it was commissioned by the publisher Novello for the Birmingham Music Festival and premiered there under the direction of the composer on 9 October 1891. Par BRUCH MAX. Thanks to the premiere performance by Joseph Joachim and to the release of the printed edition in 1868, Max Bruch's Violin Concerto #1 zipped onto the road to success and has never left it since. Yet from the preface of the 'BreitkopfUrtext' edition, one can infer how things looked like behind the dazzling facade. After the world premiere, the composer struggled for the definitive form. He wrote '3, 4 development sections in the finale,' and sought the advice of celebrated virtuosi such as Joseph Joachim and Ferdinand David to revise the solo part. And after all this was done (see above), Bruch suffered under the work's popularity: 'Have I written nothing but this one concerto?'
The new Urtext edition is based primarily on the first edition. Next to the main source and the autograph, what is supremely interesting is a solo part with entries by Joachim and Bruch. It confirms how intensively the two men collaborated on honing the final form of the work./ Répertoire / Violon 2 (Partie Séparée)

Par MOZART WOLFGANG AMADEUS. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's horn concertos: the Mozart expert Henrik Wiese edits the central work genre of Viennese classicism according to the current status of international Mozart research. Mozart wrote the Horn Concerto K. 417 - like the other works of this genre as well - for his horn-playing friend Joseph Leutgeb. The jokes which the composer made at Leutgeb's expense are wellknown. For example, he called the dedicatee a 'donkey” in the autograph, and, as Henrik Wiese evidences in his preface, Mozart also occasionally enjoyed a bit of tomfoolery with the soloist in the musical text as well.
Otherwise the editor's task was anything but amusing. The main source - the autograph score - is incomplete: missing are the close of Movement I as well as the entire slow middle movement. For these two sections, Wiese used a copy of the score from the archive of the publisher Johann André. The unusual circumstance that Mozart generally left the horn part almost unmarked recurs in the Concerto K. 417 and was deliberately maintained in the Urtext edition./ Répertoire / Violon 2 (Partie Séparée)

Allerheiligentag V. Par LINJAMA JYRKI. The material for Jyrki Linjama's Allerheiligentag cycle is a Finnish folk chorale for All Saints' Day (no. 146 in the Finnish Hymn Book). The first work in the cycle is a string trio (2007), the second a piece for orchestra (2009), and the fourth and fifth are solo works for viola da gamba (2018) and Sonata for violin solo (2019). The composer tells: 'The choice of topic and material was originally influenced by the place where the string trio would be premiered ? the old church on the island of Seili (Själö) in the Turku archipelago. The bleak history of the mental hospital on the island invited images of suffering and death. I got so attached to the fine, bleak melody that this series of works began to emerge.' Lasting 17 minutes, the sonata for solo violin has three movements, all of them embracing the folk choral material and Béla Bartók?s influence in different ways. It was premiered by Kaija Saarikettu at the Kaustinen Chamber Music Festival in 2020. / Date parution : 2022-05-31/ Répertoire / Violon

An Introduction to Folk Styles, Technique and Improvisation. This in-depth tutor...(+)
An Introduction to Folk Styles, Technique and Improvisation. This in-depth tutor book, from renowned fiddle player and teacher Chris Haigh, is perfect for classical violinists and fiddle players looking to master the art.
Covering all aspects of folk violin technique from ornamentation to modes and scales, and from scordatura to improvisation and composition.
The book is centred around Irish traditional music, but also dips into English, Scottish, Scandinavian, East European, Klezmer, Cajun and American Old-Time traditions.
Accompanied by audio recordings (to download) of all pieces performed by Chris Haigh with a live backing band.
Folk fiddle and classical violin are as different as chalk and cheese. At first glance, folk might seem so simple it's hardly worth bothering with. The tunes are often no more than 32 bars long, they stay in first position, and they don't even have a composer. However, it's what's NOT written on the page that makes folk fiddle so interesting and challenging.
This book attempts to explore, from general observation down to the finest detail, what the fiddler needs to know to bring these tunes alive. We need to understand their history and context, their purpose, their structure and pulse. And we need to be able to add all the stylistic elements that come not from reading the music, but from years of immersion in folk music, both listening and playing.
Key areas covered include:
Tune types and structures
Ornamentation
Bowing
Modes and scales
Scordatura
Starts, endings and links
Variation, improvisation and composition Playing tunes in 'sets”
Regional and individual style
Playing in sessions, for contests, and for dancing / Niveau : 3 / Pédagogie / Etude / Violon
