Après avoir quitté Weather Report, il continue à enregistrer et à diriger des groupes de jazz fusion, notamment lors d'une tournée en 1988 avec le guitariste Carlos Santana. De nombreuses compositions de Shorter sont devenues des standards du jazz, et sa musique est appréciée dans le monde entier et saluée par la critique. Shorter a remporté 12 Grammy Awards. Sherwood Concerto pour saxophone soprano (ou clarinette) et orchestre a été créé par Nicolas Prost et Sébastien Paindestre à New York City, N.Y. le 22 février 2023 et à Paris le 28 mai 2023.
