His brilliant technique and rich tone produced a characteristic sound that was and remains immediately identifiable. Par PLANEL. French composer, Robert Planel (1908-1994) was the son of composer and founder of the Music School of Montelimar, Alphonse Planel. Robert Planel was an exceptionally accomplished musician, reflected in his composition Prelude and Saltarelle for Alto Saxophone and Piano. It is hard to fathom why Prelude and Saltarello has somewhat disappeared from the repertoire. With a typical performance lasting about seven minutes, Planel 's pieces is made up of two movements. The Prelude begins calm and, while tonality is exploited and significantly complex flourishes are heard, therelationship between the Saxophone and Piano remains exquisite. The movement then climaxes into the 6/8 Saltarello. Par BALAZS ARPAD. Árpád Balázs (*1937) composed the first version of the work between 1994 and 1996 for tárogató and concert band. Since this traditional Hungarian instrument is rarely found in ensembles abroad, a soprano saxophone can serve as an alternative solo instrument. The composer uses melodies from the early 18th century, from the age of Rákóczi's war of independence. An ambitious framework is given to the work by the reminiscing, solemnly flowing brass chorus, which is built of the motives of the folk song Oh, Rákóczi, Bercsényi (Hej, Rákóczi, Bercsényi). As a contrast serves then Panna Czinka's ancient ''violin lament''. Following this, in a pierced-work-like fashion, the folk song The dew of green forest (Zöld erdo harmatát) comes in, then, as the culmination of the work, the well-known, wild Kuruc dance of Csínom Palkó appears. It is an early attempt in my work at magnifying the barriers between sound and silence, exploring the extreme ranges of pianissimo sounds in the saxophone that seem to appear without recognizable transition out of nothing. Glissandi, sliding tones, have always fascinated me, and in this piece I applied for the first time my ideas about pitch slides in a composition. These two qualities - the absence of a recognizable boundary between soft and inaudible sound, and the absence of a stationary pitch by employing glissandi - were soon to become something of a basis of my compositional aesthetic for many years. It was in Music for Saxophone and Piano that these ideas seem to have first germinated. The architecture of this piece employs a simple binary form, but the halves are stylistically diametrically opposed, creating a dialectical pair, the serene and elegiac character of the second half being born out of the high point and cathartic event of the first half. Par NODA. Maï by Ryo Noda, a Japanese composer, is a unique piece of work for solo Saxophone that is strongly influenced by Japanese music. With some sonority supposed to be quite close to those of a koto and of a shakuhachi, this piece is very technical and complex to play. The story behind this work is about the ghost of a Japanese Samurai. While his wife asks why he let her behind and left to fight in the war, he tries to justify his choices. Most of the work depicts the struggle within the mind of the Samurai, between ending his life and living in the end of his enemies. The screaming altissimo at the end is the climax of his strugglewhich then followed by a 10 second silence that represents his death.
