The tune
SEGUNDO is intended
specifically for hymn
texts in long meter (LM,
or 88 88) that
can benefit from a
sense of gravitas. In
performance, the entire
hymn may be sung by
unison choir, or if
desired, the beginning
stanzas may be sung by
one or more soloists or
sections allowing the
piece to build over its
four stanzas, so that the
last stanza, with its
soaring descant, pours
forth rife with
emotion.

At Her
Ladyship's Request (2016)
was an idea born out of
admiration for the wind
works of Percy Grainger -
most notably his
Lincolnshire Posey. The
names and places here are
all fictitious. Four
countrymen have come
forward at Her Ladyship's
request as we commoners
(and for as long as I can
remember) have been led
to believe Her Highness
has grown complacent in
her aged betrothal to His
Lordship. I. It has long
been established in this
hill country that young,
svelte Tom Abel has
caught her fancy eye. He
knocks about with the
swagger of a visiting
dignitary, confident and
cocksure. And then there
is his father's fortune.
Cecil Abel may be the
richest man in the land
save for His Lordship.
Tom, his only son, will
run his face straight
into that pile the moment
his old man kicks. II. It
is rare to spy Father
Daniel Bennett, High
Priest from the Abbey at
Lockwood Cross, loitering
in our very own town
square...but not as of
late. III. Is Her
Ladyship so desperate as
to call upon Old Man
Dimplesweet? Were you to
confirm this, I would
have straightened my back
and spit the ground
before you. Then I saw
what could not possibly
be misconstrued. And
where is His Lordship
anyway? IV. Pettybone!
Conniving... insidious. I
don't believe there has
been a greater rivalry
among men for
generations. The Duke's
ego alone could run our
nation. The grudges he
grows are notorious. His
mount is legendary. The
day has come to collect
his toll. At Her

Resig
nation was
composed in memory of
one of Ed Kiefer's best

struggle of coming to
grips with the loss of a
dear friend, the piece is
based on the hymn, My
Shepherd Will Supply My
Need. It is dramatic,
heartfelt, and
overwhelmingly beautiful.

NotesThere is no possible
way I could compose a
piece of music worthy of
the memory of my close
friend, Dr. David Kirby,
who died very suddenly at
an early age. Neither
could I write a piece
that could come close to
reflecting his kind
spirit, wit, personality
or talent. In fact, it
was almost impossible for
me to write anything at
all. My own grief and the
stages of my
grief kept getting in
the way. I ended up with
a setting of the
hymn-tune, Resignation.
Resigned. To the fact
that he is no longer
with us. I know he is
in a better place, but we
are not. We miss him very
much. And so, My Shepherd
Will Supply My Need seems
to speak to those of us
he left behind. I
apologize if this piece
does not reflect your
special feelings for him
or help you celebrate his
moving on. Unfortunately,
I could only put down
what I have come to
accept and hope in some
way it may speak to any
of you that knew him or
to others of you who have
also lost a close friend.
My Shepherd Will Supply
My Need. That is my
hope and my hope for
you.Although technically
very easy, this
composition requires a
maturity of musicianship
to be performed properly.
The Bb contrabass
clarinet part is integral
to the composition, but
there are cues in the
tuba part if you need
them. Â Make sure you
bring horns to the fore
at m. 53 and the low
brass at m. 59 so the
melody can be heard
without effort.
Exaggerate dynamics to
bring more emotion to the
piece. Be careful not to
diminuendo too soon near
the end or it will be
difficult to diminish
even further at the very
end, where the lone
clarinetist holds over a
couple of measures,
fading into nothing. I
hope your students will
enjoy this piece and take
from it a greater
appreciation for the way
making music can express
feelings.

About
Jónas
HalgrÃmsson
(1807-1845) was an
Icelandic poet, author
and naturalist, who is
considered one of
Iceland's most renowned
poets. Considered a
Romantic writer, the
strong imagery in his
poetry was influenced
heavily by the landscapes
around him.The imagery,
excitement, and curiosity
of the universe leapt off
the page and the music
almost wrote itself.
Reflecting on the cosmos
and origin of the
heavens, the poetry
elicits excitement and
stirs spatial imagery -
...speeding spark of
light, ...wings swifter
than wind..., ...I
watched the stars...rise
from the still stream of
heaven... The pure and
almost child-like
fascination with the
universe and its
expansion and progression
fuels the perpetual
rhythm of the work as it
continually pushes
forward.A good friend
asked if I would write a
song for her ensemble.
The original voicing, for
SAB choir, contained
parameters in that it had
to be three-part with a
limited range in the Bass
part. With these
stipulations I began to
write. I searched for
something that would be
exciting for them and
landed on Jonas
Halgrimsson’s
writings. I believe it is
equally as exciting,
accessible and
challenging for
tenor-bass
choirs. Directorâ€

Composer Bud
Woodruff takes his
musical inspiration for
Adventurer's Dream from a
rooster named Wally. Mr.
Woodruff turns this
charming four-note crow
into the main thematic
material for this piece
that is reminiscent of
classic movie
scores. The principal
theme to this piece has
an interesting history .
We had a very young
rooster named Wally . He
had a quite rhythmic
four-pitched crow, which
was very unique and
consistent . As he aged,
his crow settled into
pitches and the opening
melodic figure of this
piece is the very pitches
and rhythm of
Wally’s crow .
However, Wally had a
touch of a glissando
between the last two
pitches, which I chose to
eliminate, for
musicality’s sake
. Wally's crow is spun
out in different ways and
used one way or another
in all the sections of
the piece . Wally was a
very energetic, if not
egotistical, young bird,
and the piece should be
performed accordingly, in
a dashing, swashbuckling,
heroic style, which Wally
would appreciate greatly
and agree that it was
very
appropriate!Rehearsal
suggestions:The most
difficult thing to
accomplish in this work
will be deciding if you
want the repeated
eight-note figure on the
string or off the string
. I don’t care as
long as it sounds
staccato . On the string,
it needs to be played at
or by the camber point;
off the string, that
point will change
depending upon your
tempo, but the stroke
itself should remain
consistent .Although the
basses never have the
melody, they are a
critically important
section and can make or
break this piece . Their
part counters the others
and fills in rhythmic
gaps in a number of
places . It needs to be
played aggressively and
metronomically; they are
the glue that makes the
piece work . The cellos
need to sing for all they
are worth at m . 63 and
do so with joy in their
hands . Their theme needs
to be very lyrical and
smooth . The
countermelody at m . 79
should be understated,
yet not buried while
being intertwined with
the cellos’ theme
. It harkens back to the
main theme and needs a
dreamy quality to it .The
piece was written as a
string orchestra piece .
The optional harp part
was added later and is
not necessary for an
effective performance of
the piece . However, it
does add some extra
variety and color to the
piece, and reinforces the
basses when they fill in
those rhythmic gaps to
which I referred earlier
.A very special thanks
goes to harpist Jane
Minnis for the great and
insightful suggestions
for this part .Thank you
for playing this piece .
I trust you will enjoy it
as much as I do .
