comments: A Bach for
string quartet is another
evocation of the past, in
this case of J.S. Bach's
works for violin. Written
in 2004, it is a
recreation of two of the
most important movements
in the series of Sonatas
and Partitas: The Adagio
of the third Sonata and
the Prelude of the third
Partita (BWV 1005 and
1006, respectively).
Jordi Cervello was a
violinist and, as such,
it should come as no
surprise that he once
again makes use of
compositions written for
his instrument. The
Adagio, here in common
time (the original by
Bach is in three-four
time), keeps up the
constant rhythmic figure
of the dotted quaver and
semi-quaver throughout
the movement, with a
calmness that is shrouded
in mystery. The second
movement, Preludiando,
retains the same lively
spirit as the original,
but explores different
moods. Moments of calm,
vigour and even some
dramatic points give it a
new dimension thanks to
the fact that it is
written for a quartet and
to Cervello's original
treatment of harmony and
counterpoint.

en todo el movimiento la
constante figura ritmica

...c
alled dusk II for string
quartet draws its
inspiration from a line
in Samuel Beckett's short
story Lessness: 'Figment
dawn dispeller of
figments and the other
called dusk'.The work is
a kind of double
Chaconne, each part of
which contains 26 chords
based on specific
permutations of
fundamental notes and
their harmonics. Each of
the parts pass through
alternating, harmonically
contrasted planes,
becoming entwined in the
manner of a chimera
through their rhythmic
structure and dynamics.
This intermittently
produces a sort of 'inner
voice' which runs through
all four instruments. The
fundamental notes and
harmonics separate during
the progress of the
composition, becoming
independent and then
disintegrating. The
consonant harmony
resulting from the
amalgamation of the two
planes ultimately
collapses into a rigid
motor-like linearity.

I fell
in love with the
remarkable singing of the
Tenores di Bitti on
hearing their recordings
as a student. Their
uniquely intense vocal
timbre, their harmony,
which seemed pure and
rough at once, and the
sense that this music
was, at root, not so much
about performance as
simply being together in
the world, in a community
of spirit. At the time, I
had no intention of using
this music to my own
creative ends, but now,
here we are: Sardinian
Songbook is the second in
a cycle of works for the
Ligeti Quartet, all based
on transcriptions of
music from different
throat-singing
traditions. Like string
quartets, the tenores
usually sing in groups of
four voices, but being
free from instruments
they stand very close
together enabling the
resonances of their
voices to blend and
interact in a special
way. The quartet, of
course, can only sit so
close before their bows
clash, so I have chosen
instead to reflect this
physical closeness
inversely, by getting the
players to stand
increasingly far from one
another as the piece
progresses. In so doing,
the initial state of
sonic blend gives way to
hocketing lines, opening
up the sense of
space.Christian Mason,

Ignac
e Strasfogel (1909 -
1994), a master student
of Franz Schreker and
Leonid Kreutzer, the
youngest student at the
Berlin Hochschule and the
youngest recipient of the
prestigious Mendelssohn
Prize of the Weimar
Republic, made a career
as a conductor at the
Metropolitan Opera after
his emigration in 1934.
His String Quartet No. 1,
probably written in 1927
as the final work of his
studies with Schreker, is
an early work of the
highest perfection. In
the first of the two
movements,
grotesque-capricious
scenariosare revitalized
by contrapuntal artistry.
The second, non less
polypohnic, is a widely
branched scherzo with an
elegiac trio section.
Just as striking is the
harmony: With
individually shaping of
all four parts, all
facets up to polytonality
and complete detachment
from functional tonality
are explored - in a
certain affinity with the
musical language of Alban
Berg, not without
tongue-in-cheek
references to the
neoclassicism of the
1920s. A just as original
as important contribution
to the quartet
repertoireof the early
twentieth century.

Lowel
l Liebermann's 4th String
Quartet was commissioned
by the Canandaigua Lake
Chamber Music Festival
and the Wood Library,
Canandaigua, NY, for the
Orion Quartet in
celebration of their 20th
Anniversary. The quartet
was premiered by the
Orions at the Canandaigua
Lake Chamber Music
Festival in Rochester, NY
on February 9th, 2008. To
quote the writer Mark
Greenberg: It's a
remarkable piece. The
mood is elegiacal and
meditative, the melodic
lines sinuous and
searching, the harmonies
rich and astonishingly
beautiful. Liebermann
works within the
traditions of Western
tonality, but that is a
mansion with many rooms.
Liebermann inhabits all
of them as his expressive
purposes require, and he
doesn't mind knocking
down a wall to create new
harmonic spaces. The
Fourth Quartet doesn't
exactly fit the
neoromantic niche into
which Liebermann is
sometimes placed. Much of
the music, especially
near the beginning, is a
highly advanced and fluid
chromatic expressionism
with modernist
tendencies. Sometimes
this roiling cloudscape
breaks open to allow a
patch of near-classical
harmony and
almost-resolution. Near
the midpoint the clouds
lift in leaping
modulations. Several
chordal passages recall
Russian Orthodox chant.
Suddenly, when you've
begun to think the
somber, deliberate pace
has gone on a bit too
long, Liebermann
introduces a kind of
hobbled, stilted jazz
idiom. The piece dies in
pensive quiet.

Kale
vi Aho (b.1949) was only
18 years old when he
completed his String
Quartet no. 1 in g minor
(1967). Nonetheless it
was already the second
one of its kind: the
earlier string quartet in
a minor got christened
String Quartet No. 0 and
banned from performing.
The g minor quartet was
heard the first time only
50 years after it was
born, when the Kamus
Quartet premiered it at
the Musica Kalevi Aho
Festival in Forssa on
June 28, 2019. In Aho's
home town, Forssa, it was
not possible to study
composition with a
teacher: My model in this
and the other works I
composed while I was at
school was all the mostly
tonal music I had
personally played on the
violin or heard on the
radio. The first
movement, Moderato,
begins in variation form,
until followed by a fugue
based on the variation
theme. The initially
lyrical second movement
has a quick, virtuosic
and light middle section.
The third movement is a
very quick scherzo that
becomes dramatic, and the
work ends with a
chorale-like finale. The
composer tells: When I
got to study composition
at the Sibelius Academy
in autumn 1968 and showed
the quartet to my
teacher, Einojuhani
Rautavaara, he said there
was no point my studying
tonal harmony and tonal
formal constructions any
longer; that I could do
the exams in them
straight away and start
the courses in modern
music resources there and
then..

Due to the
small number of required
instruments, this musical
fairy story for children
can also be performed in
small rooms. Tristan
Schulze who is very
successful in the field
of children's theatre
tells the story in a
modern language. The
music is written in
classical harmony. The
four string instruments
provide a musical
accompaniment of or
comment on the text, or
let the narrated action
continue to have an
effect in instrumental
interludes. With
imagination and love of
experimentation, the work
can be complemented by
scenic actions, pictures
and performances. Thus,
'Der gestiefelte Kater'
playfully introduces
children to the
music-theatre genre.
