This
short but beautifully
crafted motet for upper
voices was composed for
the combined girls choirs
of Godolphin &
Latymer School whilst
Kerensa Briggs was
Composer in Residence
there in 2019. The
well-known biblical text
(Matthew 6: 33–4),
often used as a hymn,is
set with a reflective
character in a largely
homophonic texture using
the composer's signature
rich harmonies.
Essentially in three
parts, there is further
division which adds
colour and expression.
Suitable for intermediate
upper voice choirs
looking to expand their
repertoire and bring new
life to a familiar
text.

The
cantata O God, what glut
of care and pain BWV 58,
which Bach subtitled
Dialogus and wrote for
the Sunday after New
Year, limits itself
accordingly to the dialog
couple consisting of
soprano and bass; further
soloists or a choir are
not required. In the
framing movements, the
dialog takes on the form
of a chorale arrangement:
the soprano presents a
cantus firmus whose words
are consolingly commented
on by the bass. Both the
expansive chorale
arrangements leave room
for an aria which is
framed by two
recitatives. The cantata
was composed for the
Sunday after New Year
1727, but the received
form is from a subsequent
performance that took
place six or seven years
later. For this
performance, Bach not
only expanded the
instrumentation but also
replaced an entire aria.
Later, he assigned the
cantata to his annual
cycle of chorale
cantatas, probably due to
its high proportion of
chorales; this Sunday was
missing in that annual
cycle as there was no
Sunday between New Year
and Epiphany in 1725.

Nick
Strimple has composed a
set of three easy
anthems, and lacking in
difficulty is absolutely
true. But elegant and
distinguished also
describes these settings
of familiar texts. The
words by 19th century
English poet John Bowring
is the least known text,
but it is timeless and
speaks of God's enduring
love. The organ
accompaniment contains
scrumptious suspensions
and resolutions for an
anthem that works equally
well as a choral piece, a
solo, or for unison
choir.

“I
asked my friend, the poet
Einar Askestad, if he
could write a poem for me
about love between father
and son, brothers and
God. I felt that these
forms of love are seldom
sung about. The poem
moved me greatly and I
have tried to put music
to these words which is
simple yet full of
beauty. In the four
movements of this
suite-like piece, various
aspects of these
relationships are
conveyed.†(Marten
Jansson)
â€
œMy music is my own and
I have never tried to be
original. That has always
been my motto and I have
only tried to use music
to express all the
feelings which life has
to offer. This has led
people to describe my
music as ‘so sad
that it sounds like birds
who have lost their
wings‘ but also as
‘the happiest
classical music that we
have ever
heard’. My
compositions are almost
all sacred. They express
not only my own faith but
also my appreciation and
respect for the timeless
texts that have been used
for centuries and
centuries.â€

Euge
ne Butler has crafted a
striking setting of text
from Psalm 36,
celebrating the love of
God that reaches to the

grandly and joyfully, the
music moves through
several contrasting moods
to reach a glorious

a brief, prayerful

This is a
welcome setting of these
famous words from Psalm
51. Peter Pindar Stearns
contributes a typically
imaginative melodic and
harmonic setting of the
text, but in addition, he
has given such prominence
to the organ part that it
becomes as a fifth voice.
The organ introduces the
musical material and also
provides interludes that
set the atmosphere for
the text. The vocal
ranges are moderate in
scope, thus aiding in the
learning process. This
fresh setting of these
beloved words will be
most appropriate for the
Lenten season.

in Meisterwerk, die Oper
Boris Godunow,
schrieb Mussorgski auf
der Grundlage des
gleichnamigen Dramas von
Alexander Puschkin. In
diesem Stück
erklärt sich Boris
Godunow mit
Unterstützung des
Volkes selbst zum Zaren,
versagt aber kläglich
in dieser Rolle. Das Werk
ist voll von

Compositore
essenzialmente
autodidatta, Modest
Mussorgski (1839-1881)
discende da una famiglia
agiata della nobilt
russa. Il suo capolavoro
lirico, Boris Godunov, si
basa sulla tragedia di
Alexander Puschkin, nella
quale Boris Godunov,
proclamatosi zar e
sostenuto dal popolo,
fallisce nel suo ruolo.
Nel 1896, l’opera
conosce il successo in
una versione ritoccata da
Rimski Korsakov. La
versione originale di
Mussorgski contiene idee
uniche, dettagli
armonici, melodici e
strumenti innovativi. Per
trascrivere questo brano
per banda, Tohru
Takahashi ha raccolto i
superlativi temi musicali
dell’opera.

Carol Browning's original

contemporary ensemble,
Carol's catchy refrains
spark natural assembly

spirited Give Thanks to
the Lord, based on
Psalm107, is energetic
and fun, while O Lord,
the Guardian of My Heart
offers a prayer of quiet
strength. With Grateful
Hearts is ideal for
Thanksgiving
celebrations. But perhaps
the best and brightest of
this great collection is
Ubi Caritas, a stunningly
beautiful version of the
classic chant text with
music and verse texts by
Browning. This recording
is simply a great new way
to become familiar with
the works of this rising
new composer. Contains
one each of the following
octavos: Give Thanks to
the Lord - Sing a New
Song - O Lord, the
Guardian of My Life - I
Come to You, O God -
Benediction - With
Grateful Hearts - Fill Us
with Your Love, O Lord -
God of Our Comings and
Goings - Jesus, Lamb of
God - If Jesus Wept - Ubi
Caritas - Alleluia,
Christ Is Risen.
