The

Wilten-Innsbruck
(Austria) invited Belgian
composer Jan Van der
Roost to write a work to
mark the bicentenary of
the Tyrolean fight for
freedom, which was
settled in 1809. Various
musical elements reflect
this historical event.
First, a hymn-like
section rings out, based
on melodic fragments from
the ‘Tiroler
Landeshymne’ (by
Leopold Knebelsberger),
which intertwine in a
counterpoint-like
arrangement. The second
passage is more bellicose
in character, and mirrors
the fight of the
Tyroleans - under the
inspiring leadership of
freedom fighter Andreas
Hofer (1767-1810) -
against Bavarian, French
and Italian troops. Next,
a broad, chorale-style
melodyappears again:
here, the imposing beauty
of nature in Tyrol, and
the amiable, lively
temperament of the people
who live in this
mountainous region, are
glorified.This is neither
a programmatic work
around an historical
reconstruction, nor a
politically inspired
work: it is a combination
of factual and cultural
components, with an
artistic and sonorous
character. The use of the
flugelhorn in particular
gives Tirol Terra
Fortis its
‘couleur
locale’: for this
beautiful instrument can
invariably be found in
the Austrian wind band.
The commissioning music
society had therefore
specifically asked the
composer to incorporate
the instrument in this
work. It certainly
enhances the already
extensive colour palette
of the modern concert
band!

2011 was a
disastrous year for
Japan: on March 11 the
northeast of the country
suffered a violent
earthquake, which
triggered a huge tsunami
and caused massive damage
to people and the
environment. The ensuing
problems with the nuclear
reactor at Fukushima only
increased the misery: a
black day in the
country’s
history…One almost
inevitable consequence of
such dramatic
circumstances is the
particular damage
suffered by the cultural
arts. And so it was in
Japan: various high
school wind orchestras in
the effected areas lost
their practice rooms
and/or instruments. It
will take a long time
before the damage
suffered is
repaired—and it
will take great effort to
overcome thepsychological
effects, too. Focusing on
the latter, Yutada
Nishida (director of The
Bandwagon radio program)
asked a few composers for
a simple work that could
be played by many
orchestras. It just so
happened that the Osakan
Philharmonic Winds (with
whom Jan Van der Roost
had conducted a concert
exclusively of his own
works on September 25th)
had had a similar idea.
This concert saw the
baptism of Song of Hope.
This piece immediately
struck a chord with
musicians and audience
alike: it begins bleakly
in the low register and
evolves to a more open,
optimistic close. There
really is hope for better
times!
2011 was
een rampzalig jaar voor
Japan: op 11 maart
teisterde een hevige
aardbeving het
noordoosten van het land,
bracht een enorme tsunami
teweeg en veroorzaakte
zeer grote schade aan
mens en natuur. De
daaruit voortvloeiende
problemenmet de
kernreactor van Fukushima
maakten de ellende nog
groter: een zwarte pagina
in het bestaan van het
land ... Dat in
dergelijke dramatische
omstandigheden ook (en
vooral) het culturele
bestel een flinke knauw
krijgt, ishelaas een
haast onvermijdelijke
consequentie. Zo ook in
Japan: verschillende high
school bands in de
getroffen regio verloren
hun repetitieruimte en/of
instrumenten: het zal
lang duren voordat de
geleden schade is
hersteld - enhet zal ook
moeite kosten om er
mentaal weer bovenop te
geraken. Met het oog op
dat laatste aspect
verzocht Yutaka Nishida
(samensteller van het
radioprogramma The
Bandwagon) een paar
componisten om een
eenvoudig werkje te
schrijvendat speelbaar is
door een groot aantal
orkesten. Als bij toeval
kwam een dergelijk
verzoek eveneens van de
kant van de OSAKAN
Philharmonic Winds,
waarmee Jan Van der Roost
op 25 september een
concert dirigeerde,
uitsluitend gewijdaan
eigen werken. Daar werd
Song of Hope dan ook ten
doop gehouden en het
werkje sloeg meteen aan
bij uitvoerders en
publiek: na een tamelijk
donkere start in het lage
register evolueert het
tot een optimistischer en
opener slot.Er is
inderdaad hoop op betere
tijden!

Yutaka Nishida vom

einige Komponisten,
darunter Jan Van der

düster im tiefen
Register, um sich dann zu
einem optimistischeren
Schluss hin zu

Glorioso<

and is dedicated to, the
‘Siena Wind

work opens after a short
aleatoric intro, with an
energetic and brassy
‘one tone
fanfare’. The note
F acts as an omnipresent
note, and is also used as
a bridge into the second,
rather static movement. A
noble sounding theme
leads to an impressive
climax, shortly followed
by the spectacular and
virtuoso finale, which is
built on the musical
elements that have been
heard before.
Stylistically, this

The term
passage can variously
describe a passageway of
travel, a musical phrase,
or perhaps the soul's
moving on from this world
to the next. In this work
for band, dark and rich
sonorities are contrasted
with a lilting,
Celtic-flavored melody as
it alternates with
striking passages from
the brass. Later, an alto
sax soloist adds a
haunting quality to the
mood followed by a return
of the ethnic drumming
heard earlier. This
unique and rewarding
composition is
beautifully paced and
skillfully orchestrated

Claudio
Monteverdi composed this
toccata as an
instrumental introduction
for the opera
L’Orfeo (1607).
According to the
composer, this
introduction should be
played three times before
the rising of the
curtain. This is actually
the first overture in the
history of opera.)The
story of Orfeo, who
enchanted nature with his
music, is tragic, as he
loses his beloved
Eurydice and decides to
retrieve her from the
underworld. On their
return journey, one
glance back at her is
fatal: he loses her for
the second time.)This
arrangement for wind band
is very suitable as a
concert opener. The
toccata is played three
times just like the
original. The first time
it is played by a
quintetconsisting of two
trumpets and three
trombones.)Various ways
of performing this
toccata are possible. The
tension builds up more
intensely if the quintet
starts off stage.
Eventually, these five
players join the band,
after which the tutti
version follows two
times. You can also have
the brass play from the
gallery during the second
or third time for a
double choir effect.
Claudio
Monteverdi componeerde
deze toccata als
instrumentale inleiding
tot de opera
L’Orfeo
(1607). Dit arrangement
voor harmonieorkest is
dan ook heel geschikt als
openingswerk. De toccata
wordt drie keer gespeeld,
de eerste keer door een
kwintet van twee
trompetten en drie
trombones. De opbouw van
de spanning is intenser
als het kwintet in de
coulissen of achter het
podium begint. Vervolgens
voegen deze vijf
muzikanten zich bij de
rest van het orkest,
waarna de tutti-versie
nog twee keer
klinkt.
Claudio
Monteverdi schrieb diese
Toccata als
instrumentales Vorspiel
zur Oper l'Orfeo.
Sie sollte drei Mal vor
der Hebung des Vorhangs
gespielt werden. Damit
hatte er tatsächlich
die erste Ouvertüre
der Operngeschichte
geschaffen! Wie im
Original, wird auch in
dieser Bearbeitung die
Toccata drei Mal
gespielt: zunächst von
einem Trompeten- und
Posaunenquintett, dann
zwei Mal vom gesamten
Blasorchester. Ein
ideales
Eröffnungswerk!
Claudi
o Monteverdi (1567-1643)
compose questa Toccata
strumentale per
l’ouverture
dell’opera tragica
L’Orfeo (1607). Il
compositore desiderava
che questo brano di
apertura fosse eseguito
tre volte a sipario
chiuso. Così facendo,
compose la prima
ouverture nella storia
dell’opera. Questo
arrangiamento per banda
è ideale per iniziare
un concerto. Fedele alla
versione originale, la
Toccata è interpretata
tre volte, di cui la
prima dal quintetto
composto da tre tromboni
e due trombe.

klinken komen.
Geleidelijk wordt het
klankbeeld helderder:
hetzelfde thema maakt in
diverse varianten als het
ware eenronde door het
orkest. Met een paar
imposante tuttipassages
kan het orkest goed
uitpakken. Nadien komt
een energiek allegro met
een krachtige thematiek
naar voren, gevolgd door
een lyrisch gegeven. Deze
ingrediënten wisselen
elkaaraf op weg naar een
opwindende finale. Het
klankidioom is zeer
toegankelijk en alle
geledingen van het orkest
komen aan
bod!
Anlässlich
der 150-Jahrfeier der
Stadt Algona im US-Staat
Iowa komponiert, strahlt
diese klare,
eingängige
Ouvertüre spontane
Energie aus. Zwar beginnt
das Werk sakral und
flehend mit dunkel
gefärbten Tönen,
doch allmählich wird
der Klang klarer und
heller, während das
Thema in verschiedenen
Gewändern und
Varianten durch das
Blasorchester wandert.
Dem folgenden energischen
Allegro folgt ein
lyrisches Thema, und
beide Elemente
verschmelzen
schlieÃ?lich in einem
aufregenden Finale. Alle
Register des
Blasorchesters werden
hier beleuchtet, sodass
sowohl Spieler als auch
Zuhörer fortwährend
überrascht und
bezaubert
werden.
Qu
esto brano è dedicato
a tutti i cittadini che
vivono, che hanno
vissuto, e che vivranno
nella cittadina americana
di Algona, che ha
commissionato questo
brano per festeggiare il
suo 150. anniversario.
Algona Overture inizia in
un universo sonoro dai
colori scuri. La musica
rivela una dimensione
sacra, uno spirito di
supplica. Un canto
indiano datato di alcuni
secoli risuona come un
canto dimenticato.
Imponenti passaggi
affidati al tutti svelano
le sontuose sfacettature
dellâ??orchestra di
fiati. Algona Overture
è una composizione
coinvolgente che
trasmette entusiasmo e
spontaneit . In un brano
dove la scrittura
orchestrale privilegia
tutte le sezioni
dellâ??organico, la
musicariesce a
sorprendere e
accattivarsi il pubblico
e gli interpreti.

Claudio
Monteverdi composed this
toccata as an
instrumental introduction
for the opera
L’Orfeo (1607).
According to the
composer, this
introduction should be
played three times before
the rising of the
curtain. This is actually
the first overture in the
history of opera.)The
story of Orfeo, who
enchanted nature with his
music, is tragic, as he
loses his beloved
Eurydice and decides to
retrieve her from the
underworld. On their
return journey, one
glance back at her is
fatal: he loses her for
the second time.)This
arrangement for wind band
is very suitable as a
concert opener. The
toccata is played three
times just like the
original. The first time
it is played by a
quintetconsisting of two
trumpets and three
trombones.)Various ways
of performing this
toccata are possible. The
tension builds up more
intensely if the quintet
starts off stage.
Eventually, these five
players join the band,
after which the tutti
version follows two
times. You can also have
the brass play from the
gallery during the second
or third time for a
double choir effect.
Claudio
Monteverdi componeerde
deze toccata als
instrumentale inleiding
tot de opera
L’Orfeo
(1607). Dit arrangement
voor harmonieorkest is
dan ook heel geschikt als
openingswerk. De toccata
wordt drie keer gespeeld,
de eerste keer door een
kwintet van twee
trompetten en drie
trombones. De opbouw van
de spanning is intenser
als het kwintet in de
coulissen of achter het
podium begint. Vervolgens
voegen deze vijf
muzikanten zich bij de
rest van het orkest,
waarna de tutti-versie
nog twee keer
klinkt.
Claudio
Monteverdi schrieb diese
Toccata als
instrumentales Vorspiel
zur Oper l'Orfeo.
Sie sollte drei Mal vor
der Hebung des Vorhangs
gespielt werden. Damit
hatte er tatsächlich
die erste Ouvertüre
der Operngeschichte
geschaffen! Wie im
Original, wird auch in
dieser Bearbeitung die
Toccata drei Mal
gespielt: zunächst von
einem Trompeten- und
Posaunenquintett, dann
zwei Mal vom gesamten
Blasorchester. Ein
ideales
Eröffnungswerk!
Claudi
o Monteverdi (1567-1643)
compose questa Toccata
strumentale per
l’ouverture
dell’opera tragica
L’Orfeo (1607). Il
compositore desiderava
che questo brano di
apertura fosse eseguito
tre volte a sipario
chiuso. Così facendo,
compose la prima
ouverture nella storia
dell’opera. Questo
arrangiamento per banda
è ideale per iniziare
un concerto. Fedele alla
versione originale, la
Toccata è interpretata
tre volte, di cui la
prima dal quintetto
composto da tre tromboni
e due trombe.

The German
composer Johannes Brahms
(1833-1897) wrote his
Academic Fesival Overture
in the summer of 1880,
together with the Tragic
Overture. The occasion
was the honorary degree
which Brahms had received
a year before from the
University of Breslau.
Initially, Brahms had
sent a thank-you note,
but he was expected to
express his gratitude
with a composition. The
premiere took place on 4
January, 1881 - conducted
by the composer himself -
in Breslau. For this
sparkling work, Brahms
used various German
student songs as a basis
in an inventive way - and
a little jestingly. Owing
to the accessible
development, lyrical
warmth, humor, and
persuasiveness, the
Academic Festival
Overtureis still a
popular concert work.
This transcription for
concert band, which has
been written by Tohru
Takahashi, does justice
to the original
composition.
Voor
dit sprankelende werk
gebruikte Brahms op
inventieve wijze - en een
tikje schertsend -
verschillende Duitse
studentenliederen als
basis. Dankzij de
toegankelijke opbouw,
lyrische warmte, humor en
meeslependheid is de
AkademischeFestouvert
¼re nog altijd een
geliefd concertwerk. Deze
transcriptie voor
harmonieorkest, die is
geschreven door Tohru
Takahashi, doet recht aan
de originele
compositie.
Als
Basis für dieses
strahlende Werk, das er
zum Dank für die ihm
verliehene
Ehrendoktorwürde der
Universität Breslau
schrieb, verwendete
Brahms in erfinderischer
und heiterer Manier
verschiedene deutsche
Studentenlieder. Dank
seiner leicht
zugänglichen
Entwicklung, der
lyrischen Wärme,
seines Humors und seiner
Ãœberzeugungskraft ist
das Stück heute noch
sehr beliebt.
