Patrick
Hawes' Two Angel Preludes
, scored for solo Piano.
' Cherubim : This piano
prelude aims to create a
sense of weightlessness
and tranquillity whilst
at the same time having
momentum and energy. Like
the Seraphim, the
Cherubim are ceaseless in
prayer, and the repeated
note figurations are
designed to enhance this
image.' ' Seraphim : The
triple meter and lilting
melody in this piece for
solo piano combine to
create a sense of quiet
joy as the Seraphim
perpetually pray to the
heavenly Father.' -
Patrick Hawes.

Little
Cadenzas, Canons and
Preludes for Pianoforte,
an album of 36 piano
miniatures in all keys of
the circle of fifths and
in church modes, as well
as two preludes by
Eusebius Mandyczewski
(1857-1929) that modulate
through all keys, are
presented here for the
first time in print.
Mandyczewski, who went
down in music history as
a Brahms friend, editor
and archivist of the
Vienna Musikverein,
composed numerous vocal
and piano works,
including twelve Orthodox
liturgies and two cycles
of variations on themes
by George Frideric
Handel. The album, a
birthday present from the
composer to his
twelve-year-old daughter
Virginia, was written in
the middle of the First
World War and was not
premiered publicly until
a century later - after
the manuscript was found
in a Ukrainian library -
at the Mandyczewski
Festival in Chernivtsi
(Ukraine) in 2017.
Mandyczewski shows
himself here as a master
of the small form and
counterpoint, but also as
a demanding teacher - and
so the pieces, once
reserved for his
daughter, will now be
made accessible to a
wider circle of young
musicians to enjoy.

Cyril Scott
(1879 - 1970) composed
Deux Preludes in 1912.
Includes: I. Poeme
erotique and II. Danse.
In the first of two
Preludes, Poeme Erotique,
the continually changing
time signatures are the
defining factor,
displacing the bar
accents between a rocking
three and a rhapsodic
five-quaver meter. The
Danse that follows relies
even more on the rhythmic
acuity of its
interpreters through an
unfolding sucession of
unusual meter changes.
These two pieces will
appeal to an advanced
player wishing to enrich
his repertoire with
superb effective
performance pieces.
Schott's exemplary
printing on buff-colored
paper with
slightly-larger-than-usua
l notation should serve
to bring the unjustly
neglected Scott back into
the violin-repertoire
fold.--Strings

I am
presently collecting the
fugues of Bach - not only
of sebastian, but also of
Emanuel and friedeman,
wrote Mozart to his
father in April 1782.
This could be a hint that
the Six Three-Part
Preludes and Fugues were
derived from this
collection: Mozart wrote
string-trio arrangements
of two preludes and five
fugues by Johann
Sebastian Bach, and of
one fugue by Wilhelm
Friedemann Bach. This
apparently plunged him
into such a creative mood
that he simply wrote the
missing preludes himself.
It is to Johann Nepomuk
David that we owe the
first edition of this
work, which introduced
this unique document to a
broad public for the
first time. The present
edition has retained
David's basic editorial
decision to adapt the
divergent passages of
Mozart's arrangement to
Bach's original music

The Six
Three-Part Preludes and
Fugues are regarded as a
unique testimony to
Mozart's profound
interest in the works of
Bach. Or was it a
brilliant contemporary of
his who arranged the two
preludes and five fugues
by Johann Sebastian, and
one fugue by Wilhelm
Friedemann for string
trio and supplemented the
collection with further
preludes? The new
editions put the music
text of Johann Nepomuk
David's edition of the
parts to the test,
especially the editor's
practical arrangement,
which reflected the
performance style of his
time. These new editions
go one step further, also
in a
performance-practical
sense. The publication of
the score and
(orchestral) parts also
enables string orchestras
to play this piece for
the first time - an
instrumental possibility
that is perfectly
legitimate, both
musically and
historically. It is a
fascinating addition to
the repertoire that one
can recommend to every

Twelve
Astrological Preludes
were written over a
period of roughly two
years and several were
broadcast on BBC Radio
2's Friday Night is Music
Night as well as in other
concerts. Aquarius was
written in 1994 as a
filler to apopular BBC
solo piano series of the
time called At the Piano.
It was named Aquarius for
programming purposes and
as Elms left the studio
the producer called after
him 'Only eleven to go'
and so Twelve
Astrological Preludes
cameinto
being.
The
preludes, which run in
the usual cycle, are
based upon two melodic
strands and there is one
piece in each of the
twelve major keys. The
character and style of
each prelude alludes
to certaincharactertraits
of its particular birth
sign and each piece bears
the initials of a friend
born under that
particular sign.
Each prelude is prefaced
by a printed description
of some of the general
characteristics deemed to
beassociated with that
sign. These are, of
course, generalisations!
Some preludes show a
little deference to some
of my favourite
'masters'.
Elms
has recorded Twelve
Astrological Preludes for
the Herald label and they
areavailable on the CD
Moody Moves together with
other pieces of his
chamber music including
the piano sextet from
which the CD takes its
name. More information is

French
harpist, composer and
teacher, Marcel Tournier
(1879-1951) wrote
important repertoire for
the harp which expanded
the harmonic and
technical possibilities
of the instrument. His
Four Preludes for Two
Harps is no
exception. Published in
1921, Four
Preludes is still
performed and recorded by
harpists. The second
volume comprises the
third and fourth preludes
in which tonality and
rhythm are sublimely
experimented with, as
well as uses of
harmonics. Tournier's
Four Preludes is
suitable for all
intermediate to advanced
harp duets seeking to
explore varied repertoire
on the instrument.

Following the
model established by Bach
and Chopin, George
Gershwin (1898 â??
1937) originally planned
to write 24 modern
preludes for piano, one
in each major and
relative minor key. The
collection was to be
called The Melting
Pot as it combined
cross-cultural elements
of classical, popular,
jazz, and blues styles.
Already established as a
composer of popular
songs, Broadway musicals,
and masterpieces like
Rhapsody in Blue and
Concerto in F,
Gershwinâ??s frenetic
musical activities and an
early death intervened,
and for various
reasonsâ??only three
of the completed 5-7
preludes were published
in 1927. By omission and
circumstance, these three
compositions have endured
the test of time as
Gershwinâ??s Three
Preludes. ÃÂ
This book presents
idiomatic flute/guitar
arrangements of
Gershwinâ??s iconic
Three Preludes.
The original keys of the
preludes were altered to
accommodate drop-D guitar
tuning and highlight the
strengths and tessituras
of the two instruments.
The music is written in
standard notation only
and presented in guitar
and flute scores, guitar
accompaniment with
extensive suggested
fingering, and a pull-out
flute solo part with
guitar cues. Includes
access to an outstanding
online audio recording by
The Cypress Duo,
featuring flutist Amanda
Hoke and author/guitarist
Justin
Hoke. ÃÂ Audi
ences are going to love
hearing these preludes
rendered by the flute and
guitar, particularly
â??Prelude
IIâ?Â, in
Gershwinâ??s words,
â??a sort of blues
lullabyâ? that is
familiar to many
musicians and listeners
alike.
