Of formative importance to his artistic development was his nearly 11-year collaboration with Karlheinz Stockhausen in the 1980s and 1990s. His exchanges with Stockhausen and other composers, such as Peter Eötvös, Beat Furrer, Helmut Lachenmann, Wolfgang Rihm and Frank Zappa, allowed him to premiere more than 400 works over the last 30 years. Michel Roth is professor of composition and music theory at the Basel Academy of Music and a member of their research department. As a composer, he has been a regular guest at various international music festivals and more recently particularly in the area of music theatre. Numerous radio and CD productions document his compositional output for which he has also been awarded the composition prize by Music Viva, Munich. In addition Roth also researches and publishes on subjects concerned with music and art theory.

The Concerto Op.85 in B minor for tenor trombone, was composed for one of the 'Gambara” Musical Lycée, Edoardo Paletti. The first problem was to conceive a concert piece that could unify the usual three movements, but without being too long. So the composer decided to write a concerto in one movement, divided in three parts: the first (Allegro marziale), is a Sonata-form exposition, starting with a martial theme always in anacrusis, to which follows a second theme in jazz style. Les bonnes raisons ne manquaient pas pour m'encourager à composer un concerto pour trombone basse et Orchestre d'Harmonie. Cette composition concrétise, en premier lieu, l'amitié fraternelle qui me lie au tromboniste basse Ben van Dijk depuis trente-cinq ans, et coïncide avec mes trente ans de carrière de musicien professionnel (1er mai 2007). D'autre part, j'ai souhaité apporter ma contribution au répertoire solo pour trombone basse, bien pauvre en oeuvres lyriques qui exploitent pleinement les capacités mélodiques et musicales de l'instrument. Enfin, ce concerto est un hommage à Piet van Dijk (1920-2003), le père de Ben, qui fut un musicien dans l'âme et un être extraordinaire. En tant que professeur de trombone et d'euphonium, il a joué un rôle essentiel dans ma carrière future de musicien et je lui en serai toujours reconnaissant. Un festival ambitieux autour du trombone offrait le cadre idéal pour la création de mon oeuvre : le festival Slide Factory 2007 organisé à Rotterdam par les membres du New Trombone Collective, ambassadeurs idéaux pour la littérature contemporaine pour le trombone. La création de Canticles (Cantiques) fut une expérience enthousiasmante, enrichie par l'étroite collaboration avec Ben van Dijk. D'ailleurs, je tiens à le remercier chaleureusement pour ses excellentes suggestions, son savoir-faire et sa passion. Je suis convaincu que cette pièce trouvera sa place dans les salles de concert !
