Although
conceived as a comical
academic musical
representation by its
renowned composer, this
overture is lyrical and
exciting. There are
opportunities for your
students to present
sudden stylistic changes
and tempo shifts which
permit for both
performance and teaching.
It is still used in a
variety of settings (even
in its comedic intent) in
films and on the more
serious concert stage.
This arrangement includes
generous cuing to
accommodate incomplete
instrumentations.
Classic, familiar and
even humorous, it is a
sure winner for your
developing band. (3:45)

The fast
paced rondo has a Dorian
flavored melody with
hints of quartel (based
on an interval of a
fourth) harmony to give
it a contemporary sound
The players are presented
with solo opportunities
as well as harmonic turns
and twists that will keep
them. Rondo in the
Nick of Time was
originally the third
movement for a woodwind
quintet piece that I
wrote in 1990. I have
always been fond of this
little piece and felt
that it would adapt well
to larger ensembles. I
have also scored this
piece for band as part of
a suite called Upon a
New Horizon.The main
theme is based on the
Dorian Mode. The use of
quartal harmony makes up
most of the harmonic
material. Each statement
of the theme is followed
by an episode that
increases in length each
time. There is a sudden
change of style and tempo
in the middle of the
piece, where fragments of
the theme are developed.
The title is a
play-on-words, since the
work contains hemiola
effects that alter the
feel of the time.As with
all of my pieces for
strings, the bowings are
given only as a
reference. Feel free to
alter them to fit the
needs of your students. I
have indicated a rather
fast tempo for the piece.
I really like the piece
to fly, but it will work
and sound fine at a
slower tempo as well.
Just endeavor to keep
their energy moving
forward.It has been my
pleasure to have the
opportunity to write this
piece. I hope that you
and your students enjoy
it and find it useful in
your program.-Larry

Throu

continually confirms the
relationship of time and
death, and the colorful

environments that only
too few have survived.
There is also the sense

growing up; the too soon
conclusion of life as in
Frozen Ceremony - the
static going nowhere of
the midnight ladies - the
age old plea of the Neon
Philosopher - the time is
out of Starbright - the
sudden awareness of
getting older in Funeral

Imag
es of the sea figure
prominently throughout my
life and memories: from
holidays on the Atlantic
coast during my Canadian
childhood to my current
Baltic home, and the
imagined, only later
experienced Mediterranean
of my ancestral heritage.
As an immigrant (son of
an immigrant) bound to
two northern countries,
the sea is emblematic of
my twin homelands, from
the expanses of water
surrounding them to those
separating them. A Mari
usque ad Mare. The sea is
also an enduring image of
the unknown, of expanses
unexplored, of the raw
power of nature and, for
too many currently, of
terror holding a hope of
refuge - or the pain of
loss. Such disparate
ideas were captured for
me in the seascapes of
the New York painter
MaryBeth Thielhelm, whom
I met in 2008 during a
residency on the Gulf of
Mexico. Her vast,
abstract, nearly
monochromatic depictions
of imaginary seas in
wildly varying moods were
the catalyst for a
concerto where the piano
is frequently far from a
hero battling a
collective, but rather
acts as a channel for
elemental forces surging
up from the orchestra,
floating - sometimes
barely so - on its
constantly shifting
surface. There are few
themes to speak of,
beyond a handful of
iconic ideas that
periodically cycle
upward. Rather, the
piano's material is
largely an ornamentation
of the more primal
rhythmic and harmonic
impulses from the
orchestra below - a
poetic interpretation, if
you will, of the more
immediate experience of
facing the vastness of
some unknown body of
water. The title
Nameless Seas is borrowed
from one of Thielhelm's
exhibitions, as are those
of the four movements,
which are bridged
together into two halves
of roughly equal weight -
one rhapsodic and free,
the other more
single-minded and direct,
separated only by a short
breath. The opening
movement, Nocturne, is
predominantly calm, if
brooding, darkness and
light alternating
throughout. Lyrical
arabesques sparkle over
gently lapping
cross-currents in the
strings and mirrored
timpani, the piano's full
power only rarely
deployed. The waves
gradually build, drawing
in the full orchestra for
a meeting of forces in
Land and Sea, a brighter,
more warmly lyrical scene
that unfolds in series of
dreamlike, sometimes even
nostalgic visions, which
for me carry strong
memories of sitting on
rocks above surging
Atlantic waves. The third
movement, Wake, is a
fast, perpetual-motion
texture of glinting,
darting rhythms and
sudden shafts of light,
with a prominent part for
the steel drums, limning
the piano's quicksilver
figurations. An ecstatic
climax crashes into a
solo cadenza that grows
progressively calmer and
more introspective rather
than virtuosic. Much of
the tension finally
releases into Unclaimed
Waters, a drifting,
meditative seascape in
which the piano is
progressively engulfed by
a series of ever-taller
waves, ultimately
dissolving into a
tolling, rippling
continuum of sound.
It has been a great
privilege to realize such
a long-held dream as this
piece, and to write it
for not one, but two
great pianists.
Risto-Matti Marin and
Angela Hewitt, both of
whose friendship and
support have been
unfailing and humbling,
share the dedication.
Nameless Seas was

Canada's National Arts
Centre, with the
premieres in Ottawa and
Helsinki led by Hannu
Lintu and Olari Elts.

In 1979,
Martin produced a set of
three quintets, in
consideration of Gorky's
piece Nighttime Enigma
Nostalgia. Each is scored
for flute, clarinet,
violin, cello, and piano.
As the title suggests,
the music is in a state
of perpetual questioning
using a variety of
approaches. For example,
Enigma opens using
ostinati (plural of
ostinato) that do not
match in length, like a
staircase with each step
a different height.
Additionally, the music
has sudden starts and
stops, again unexplained.
There are dramatic and
powerful explosive
passages that are
interrupted. The
technique, used to create
this feeling of a
perplexed music world
where things seem often
not to make sense and to
be left unresolved, is
called in poetry and
literature, anticlimax.
In Enigma, the music
suggests one direction;
then refuses to continue,
striking out in another
direction. Artists use
approaches such as this
to force themselves into
creative circumstances
that they otherwise might
not have discovered.
(From the performance
notes.).

Preludes is a set of four
pieces with two hands for
upper intermediate
players. It covers the
Preludes Nos. 1 to 4
written in 1928. Each of
these preludes is written
on one to four pages and
canbe played separately.
The first one is short,
to be played like a
romance, with chords
only. The second one
lasts longer and features
distinctive parts,
starting with an
energetic section
followed by a sudden
musical burst, therest of
it being slower until the
animated close. The third
prelude is quite slow and
very expressive while the
last piece of this book
is quite short and
simple. Federico Mompou
was a Spanish pianist and
composer. He

songs.
