PROGRAM NOTES by the ComposerJohn Henry was born a slave in the 1840’s or 1850’s. It is important to remember that no one knows for sure if John Henry existed or is a tall tale created by writers. That is one of the things that makes the legend so intriguing.According to the legend, he grew to stand 6 feet tall, 200 pounds – a giant in that day.Though the story of John Henry sounds like the quintessential tall tale, it is certainly based, at least in part, on historical circumstance. There are disputes as to where the legend originates. Some place John Henry in West Virginia, while recent research suggests Alabama. Still, all share a similar back-story.In order to construct the railroads, companies hired thousands of men to smooth out terrain and cut through obstacles that stood in the way of the proposed tracks. One such chore that figures heavily into some of the earliest John Henry ballads is the blasting of the Big Bend Tunnel, more than a mile straight through a mountain in West Virginia.Steel-drivinâ� �™ men like John Henry used large hammers and stakes to pound holes into the rock, which were were then filled with explosives that would blast a cavity deeper and deeper into the mountain. In the folk ballads, the central event took place under such conditions. Eager to reduce costs and speed up progress, some tunnel engineers were using steam drills to power their way into the rock. According to the great American tall tales, on hearing of the machine, John Henry challenged the steam drill to a contest. 3. Exit Music
Swift is marked Intense and is very rhythmic and angular. Longing is a beautiful lyrical movement marked Cantabile and Exit Music is marked Lively mixing chromatic, lyrical and syncopated segments, ending in a giant climax.
Both the solo and accompaniment parts are written for advanced performers.
The work's premier was performed in 2015 by retired Principal Trombonist of the Boston Symphony, Ronald Barron and accompanied at the Piano by Pianist Larry Wallach.

Dr. James Bicigo, Associate Professor of Trombone, University of Alaska, Anchorage Virtuoso piece, the dramatic first movement opens with a Bold statement followed by the beautiful love theme. It reaches up to the Cry of the Heart, then everything ruptures and crashes. Now the trombonist must rebuild and gain strength through dramatic cadenzas until reaching the recapitulation where the opening Bold melody is transformed into a majestic march in 3/4 time. The love theme returns, and the movement ends in triumph. The second movement is a setting of the famous Japanese folksong, Red Dragonfly. The trombonist and pianist play the lovely song amidst the sound of fluttering wings that appear and disappear like memories of the heart. Thank you to the Nihon Gakugeki Kyoukai Foundation for permission to use the melody in this trombone sonata. A solo glissando opens the third movement in American folk dance style with tongue in cheek and twinkle in both eyes. The subsequent variations include a perfect triple canon, a taste of New Orleans jazz, and a dramatic augmentation which spills into a flashback of the first movement’s love theme. This melts away and we recapture a glimpse of the Red Dragonfly melody, this time growing to the Triumphant restatement of the first movement’s main theme. And finally, the exuberant coda drives to a spectacular ending. Faure's Les Berceaux (The Cradles), Opus 23 No. 1 written in 1879 is a song set from a poem by Prudhomme. The song's melody is simple, flowing, lyrical and sad. It beautifully describes ships as they head out to sea carrying men, lured by the mystery of the seas, rocked in the water and cradled by women and held back by the soul of The Cradles. Faure's magical enchanting style in this 3 minute work is captured perfectly by Jason Beghtol's fine arranement for Intermediate Trombone.

Bartok's Allegro Barbaro, composed in 1911 is one of his most famous solo piano works, written in his typical style using folk elements based on Hungarian Pentatonic and Romanian chromatic scales. The music has even been used on a composition by the Progressive rock group Emerson, Lake and Palmer from their 1970 debut album.

Ralph Sauer's brilliant arrangement for Trombone and Piano is reminiscent of the famous Trombone passage from the Miraculous Mandarin ballet suite.

This 3 minute work is suitable for advanced performers.

I remember well when I began to write these pieces: I sat down at the piano in the conservatory, which was almost completely empty at the time... and I improvised the first chords of the first piece. After that I wrote the theme. The music rang loudly in that large auditorium and I could hear how it echoed about the empty corridors of the conservatory... it reminded me of the overture from Charles Gounod's Faust, as my hands still played out the melodies, stretching the limits of the theme which would become, in a sense, the introduction to the whole cycle. Alexander Scriabin's music has been described as mystical, lyrical and idiosyncratic. He was a most innovative and controversial early modern Russian composer. His works were ignored for many years until recently and are now seen as sincere expression(s) of genius.

The Three Etudes for Trombone and Piano are early works of Scriabin, originally written for solo Piano. They show lyricism, passion, moodiness, chromatic harmonies and great expression.

Mr. Sauer has once again brought three wonderful new works for advanced performers who wish to explore this area, largely unknown to the Trombone world. Those who do will be richly rewarded with the depth of musicanship found in these works.

The Petite Suite, published in 1885, is Borodin's major work for the Piano and originally comprised of seven movements. Mr. Sauer's arrangement incorporates three of them: Intermezzo, Reverie and Serenade. The Petite Suite was dedicated to the Belgian Countess Louise de Mercy-Argenteau, who was a supporter of Borodin and his music. After Borodin's death in 1887, Glazunov orchestrated the Suite.

The music has that Eastern flavor so indicative of Borodin's melodies, mysterious, lyrical and subtle. Advanced performers will enjoy this work which has been so beautifully arranged by Mr. Sauer.
