The third part
of the Chthonic Flute
Suite commissioned by
Areon Flutes in 2012.
This suite has two main
inspirations:
ideologically it draws
guidance from the book
The Dream and the
Underworld (1979)by James
Hillman (1926-2011) and
musically it explores the
textural possibilities of
a flute ensemble within
the context of the heavy
chamber music style I
have developed with
Edmund Welles: the bass
clarinet quartet since
1996. This style draws
virtuosic precision from
the classical realm;
innovation and texture
from jazz; and power,
rhythm and overall
perspective from rock and
metal. The term chthonic
[thon-ik] generally means
underworld. However,
Hillman thoroughly
elaborates that its true
meaning extends below the
earth and beyond it into
invisible, non-physical
and far distant psychic
realms: the deeper
mysteries of the
invisible. The trio is
divided into three
sections: The Way We
Descend--Reflection of
Narcissus--Below Nature.
Taking a break from Greek
myth-nerd terms, this
movement introduces
chthonic-flavored phrases
that elaborate on our
descent into the
underworld, specifically
through dreams. The realm
of the underworld can be
such a shock to our
dayworld, limited, egoic
consciousness that it can
seem like a violation as
Hillman points out,
referencing the Greeks:
This style of the
underworld experience is
overwhelming, it comes as
violation, dragging one
out of life and into the
Kingdom that the Orphic
Hymn to Pluto describes
as 'void of day.' So it
often says on Greek
epitaphs that entering
Hades is 'leaving the
sweet sunlight.' (p.49)
He elaborates on the
differences between
dayworld and underworld
perspectives: The dream
is not compensation but
initiation. It does not
complete
ego-consciousness, but
voids it. So it matters
very much the way we
descend. (p.112) He goes
on to describe the
various modes in which
mythical figures have
descended: Ulysses and
Aenas to learn; Hercules
to take and to test, for
example. To act like
Hercules, like the hero,
in the underworld is to
miss the point and cause
more problems, the
villain in the underworld
is the heroic ego, not
Hades. (p.113).

to England together,
doing a rapid circular
tour of Northern India on
the way. Alighting from
the plane at Delhi we
were hit by the whirling
wind and torrential rain
of the seasonal monsoon,
and early the following
morning there was also a
minor earthquake. This
experience determined the
spirit of the music, and
Northern Indian Raga
determines the purely
technical approach, with
thequasi-improvisatory
toccatalike textures
acting as decoration to a
slow-moving,
widely-spaced modal top
line which almost loses
control of the overall
shape at the mid-point -
a reflection of the
impact of those natural

In the
composition 'La terre'
several aspects of Earth
have been translated into
sounds in an associative
manner. The first part
depicts Nature, Mother
Earth, stability, the
soil which is the source
of life. Earth symbolizes
tradition, rituals,
fertility. In the music
of the composition this
can be heard in tonic and
ostinato passages.
Furthermore, human
emotions such as
gladness, sorrow, wonder,
resignation, hope and
despair, indissolubly
connected as they are to
mankind's life on earth,
are musically reflected
in sudden gusts of
expression. Earth for us
human beings is the solid
ground on which
everything in life takes
place. In the second part
different moodsare evoked
in a sort of toccata. Now
and then the music sounds
fragmented, at other
times as a solid whole.
The robustness of the
music in this part has
its roots in the earth,
originates from it. It
reflects stability and
strength, but love and
nostalgia are also
present in soft and
fragile tones. 'La terre'
is a musical narrative
about Earth, in which
music has been given
ample room to show its
many-sided beauty.

The Song of
the Earth, composed in
the summer of 1908, is
Mahler's best-known and
most personal work.
Reflecting drastic
changes in his life, its
immense emotional density
is very moving. Until the
very end, Mahler
continued to refine the
extremely differentiated
instrumentation, as is
evident in numerous
retouchings in the
autograph score and
engraver's model. It is
therefore all the more
regrettable that he was
neither able to perform
his Symphony in Songs
himself nor that he was
involved in its printing.
Unfortunately, in the
posthumously published
first edition of 1912 and
the subsequent editions
edited by Erwin Ratz and
Karl Heinz Fussl, many
questions remained
unanswered, while other
were answered in a
dubious way.The edition
is the first
text-critical one of the
work on a scientifically
sound basis. It offers
not only a more reliable
musical text, but also
systematically and
lucidly prepared
information on the
sources, their
transmission and
evaluation. All editorial
decisions have been
documented in a
transparently
comprehensible manner -
in particular those
leading to new audible
results. Work-related
notes on performance
practice, which for the
first time include
Mahler's conducting
indications, offer
valuable, indispensable
interpretive aids. In
addition to the regular
five clarinet parts, the
set of parts includes two
additional parts (3rd
clarinet/Eb clarinet,
bass clarinet/3rd
clarinet in places where
the latter plays Eb
clarinet) to allow
performances with only
four clarinets.The
completely revised piano

Composition.
Astrology is based on the
principle that each sort
of time has its own
quality. In order to
determine the quality of
a particular moment, an
astrologer looks at the
position of the planets
in the solar sustemat
that moment. Each planet
has specific types of
energies and its location
provides unique
information for a certain
moment on Earth. Thus:
its position in the sky
tells something about
what happens on
Earth.
In this
composition the typesof
energies of four planets
are musically translated.
The four planet were not
randomly chosen. There
are two pairs, whose
influence and energy are
opposite.
Venus
and Mars. Venus
represents the feminine
principle: harmony,
beauty,art, and the
ability to make
relationships and to keep
the peace. Venus
connects, and
communicates in order to
maintain the balance.
Mars represent the
masculine principle:
winning, impulsiveness,
enthusiasm, and sexual
energy for procreation.He
creates war enabling the
strongest to triumph.
Mars is musically
depicted in a stirring
march in which enthusiasm
characterises the
masculine
character.
Saturn
and Jupiter. Saturn
represents concentration
and withdrawal: the
strongnotion of
responsibility,
seriousness,
self-discipline and
melancholy. Saturn is the
hermit who will conquer
his fears and worries in
minimal conditions and by
self-chastisement. This
contemplative character
is depicted in the music
as if it isalmost
standing still, which
also reflects the given
character of this
planet. Jupiter
represents growth and
expansion: the positive,
self-confidence, the good
Samaritan, the healer.
Jupiter is the
philosopher who will make
the world a betterplace,
sees future
possibilities, and
searches for eternal
values. He is the prophet
who sometimes rants and
raves his doctrine and
proclamations, resulting
musically in a whirling
and upbeat finale. not
looking back at what has
been but searchingfor new
challenges.
Heaven and Earth was
commisioned by the Music
Lending and Information
Centre (MUI), a
department of the library
for the province of
Gelderland in Arnhem, The
Netherlands.Een
astrologische compositie.
Astrologie is
gebaseerd op het principe
dat elke tijd zijn eigen
kwaliteit heeft. Tijd
voor koffie of het was je
tijd nog niet als
bijvoorbeeld een baan aan
je neus voorbij is
gegaan. Om de
kwaliteit van een moment
te lezen kijkt
deastroloog naar de stand
van de planeten in ons
zonnestelsel op dat
tijdstip. Elke planeet
heeft specifieke
energieën en de plaats
aan de hemel geeft unieke
informatie over een
bepaald moment op aarde.
Oftewel: de stand aan de
hemel (Ouranos)
verteltiets over wat er
op aarde (Gaia)
gebeurt.
In deze
compositie worden de
energieën van vier

enthusiasm, and sexual
energy for procreation.He
creates war enabling the
strongest to triumph.
Mars is musically
depicted in a stirring
march in which enthusiasm
characterises the
masculine
character.
Saturn
and Jupiter. Saturn
represents concentration
and withdrawal: the
strongnotion of
responsibility,
seriousness,
self-discipline and
melancholy. Saturn is the
hermit who will conquer
his fears and worries in
minimal conditions and by
self-chastisement. This
contemplative character
is depicted in the music
as if it isalmost
standing still, which
also reflects the given
character of this
planet. Jupiter
represents growth and
expansion: the positive,
self-confidence, the good
Samaritan, the healer.
Jupiter is the
philosopher who will make
the world a betterplace,
sees future
possibilities, and
searches for eternal
values. He is the prophet
who sometimes rants and
raves his doctrine and
proclamations, resulting
musically in a whirling
and upbeat finale. not
looking back at what has
been but searchingfor new
challenges.

gebaseerd op het principe
dat elke tijd zijn eigen
kwaliteit heeft. Tijd
voor koffie of het was je
tijd nog niet als
bijvoorbeeld een baan aan
je neus voorbij is
gegaan. Om de
kwaliteit van een moment
te lezen kijkt
deastroloog naar de stand
van de planeten in ons
zonnestelsel op dat
tijdstip. Elke planeet
heeft specifieke
energieën en de plaats
aan de hemel geeft unieke
informatie over een
bepaald moment op aarde.
Oftewel: de stand aan de
hemel (Ouranos)
verteltiets over wat er
op aarde (Gaia)
gebeurt.
In deze
compositie worden de
energieën van vier
planeten muzikaal
vertaald. De vier
planeten zijn niet
lukraak gekozen. Het zijn
twee paren, die qua
invloed en energie
tegenovergesteldzijn.
Venus en Mars.
Venus vertegenwoordigt
het vrouwelijke principe:
