The piano
series entitled Games,
written from 1973
onwards, was conceived as
a piano method. As the
years went by, the series
lost its didactic
character, at it came to
be seen as a document
from Kurtág's
workshop, offering a key
to his grander symphonic,
chamber and vocal works
as well.Tenth volume is
divided into two parts:
In the first half,
earlier, hitherto
unpublished pieces line
up from Suite, written in
1943, to the 1980s,
providing insight into
the development of
Kurtág's musical
language. The second half
includes pieces composed
between 2002 and 2011.
The movements, often
aphorismic in their
briefness, hide
associations with various
aspects of European music
history.Many of them are
hommage or in memoriam
pieces, or subjective
personal messages to
friends, colleagues, and
beloved family members -
and thereby to all
music-loving people. This

This present
edition follows a double
aim: to assist music
students in getting
acquainted with and
growing fond of the music
in Bach's time on the one
hand and to prepare and
facilitate teaching and
studying Bach's small
preludes, on the other.
To meet the latter
objective the more
difficult dances and
suite movements prove to
be the most suitable. It
is primarily a practical
edition that follows
closely the original
music material. The
original slurring has,
however, been changed due
to teaching purposes and
in the interests of
easier study (in several
cases by omitting the
original or by adding the
most essential phrasing
and articulation slurs).
Suggestions for
tempo,performance,
dynamics and fingering
have also been given. The
eventually unusual
fingering in some places
promotes correct
phrasing, articulation.
Original ornaments that
would pose considerable
difficulties for the
students have been
omitted while the ones
that can eventually be
omitted depending on the
rechnical skill of the
students have benn put in
brackets. In such cases
an easier solution is,
however, always indicated
above the original in
brackets. This does not
exclude naturally that
students capable of
properly executing the
original ornaments of
these works without the
distortrion of the
melkody arches and rhythm
should not play them in
their full, not
simplified form. Piano
students on advanced
level are recommended to
compare the present
edition with other,
original text editions
which disclose ornaments
in their original form.
As an example two pieces
of this collection have
been included in the
appendix in the form they
appear in the original
text edition. This
attempt provides
possibilities both for
the teachers and students
to assess the nature and
extent of editorial
alterations. The name of
the composer has only
been indicated in case
where it could be
unambiguously identified.

composer’s
children. It therefore
matches another piece
written for a similar
occasion “I
Shall Love But
Theeâ€. The
lyrics are from the book
Respiro Neve by
the internationally
renowned art photographer
Luca Artioli who
possesses poetic talent
as well. The first
movement is stately and
serene as where the
contrasting allegro is
much more dynamic and
cheerful, requiring the
solid high register of
the singer. The
conclusion is festive and
radiant, partly thanks to
the contribution of a
piccolo trumpet! This
work is a wonderful
addition to the
bandrepertoire wanting to
perform with an excellent
vocal soloist!

The tune Old
Hundredth is one of
the best-known melodies
in all Christian musical
traditions and first
appeared in the 1551
psalter Pseaumes Octante
Trois de David, where it
is used as a setting for
a version of Psalm 134;
it is usually attributed
to the French composer
Louis Bourgeois (c.1510 -
c.1560). The melody was
then used in 1561 by the
Scots clergyman, William
Kethe in Sternhold and
Hopkins’ Psalter
for his paraphrase of
Psalm 100 - All People
that on Earth do
Dwell<(I>, which is still
the most familiar hymn
sung to this noble tune.
When Tate and
Brady’s New
Version of the Psalms was
published in 1696, the
melody became know as the
‘old’
version - henceits
current title. This
arrangement presents
three contrasting verses
and is effective as a
concert piece as well as
an instrumental interlude
as part of a church
service or wedding.

This work
for soprano and concert
band was originally
written for a special
occasion: the wedding of
one of the
composer’s
children. It therefore
matches another piece
written for a similar
occasion “I
Shall Love But
Theeâ€. The
lyrics are from the book
Respiro Neve by
the internationally
renowned art photographer
Luca Artioli who
possesses poetic talent
as well. The first
movement is stately and
serene as where the
contrasting allegro is
much more dynamic and
cheerful, requiring the
solid high register of
the singer. The
conclusion is festive and
radiant, partly thanks to
the contribution of a
piccolo trumpet! This
work is a wonderful
addition to the
bandrepertoire wanting to
perform with an excellent
vocal soloist!

publish the work in

edition profits from
Tobias Glockler's
experience of many years.
As with the other great
double-bass concertos of
the classical Viennese
repertoire (Dittersdorf,
Hoffmeister), Glockler
arrives at convincing
solutions. He began by
filtering out a solid
musical text from the
source (which was not
always free of
contradictions) that was
supplied with many
additions. The
disposition of the solo
part required detailed
knowledge of performance
practice, since the work
was written in the
historical Viennese
double bass tuning, and a
few passages cannot be
played without difficulty
on a modern instrument.
As with Dittersdorf and
Hoffmeister, the piano
reduction makes it
possible to use three
different double-bass
tunings (solo, orchestral
and Viennese). Moreover,
it contains the editor's
virtuoso cadenzas as
well.I have performed the
Vanhal in Viennese tuning
and it was my thesis
topic so I am thrilled to
see an edition that makes
this tuning so
accessible. I highly
recommend this
all-encompassing edition.
