Par BUNK GERARD. As a 20th century composer, Gerard Bunk developed a distinctive musical style comparable perhaps to that of Max Reger or Sigfrid Karg-Elert. In addition to Bunk?s large-scale organ work ?Legende? Op.29 and its symphonic version Op.29II, there is a further well-known ?Legende? Op.55b written for organ and string orchestra (or string quartet) which was composed in 1945. This edition offers the earlier version of this work, dating from 1914, in its original instrumentation for organ and brass quartet. In order to facilitate performance, the sketchily notated score is carefully supplemented by performance markings from the string version. Par SPARKE PHILIP. South Down Pictures was commissioned by Millenium Brass 2000, an organisation comprising three brass bands from the county of Sussex, England. The bands (Patcham Silver, Hangleton and Brighton Silver) had got together to organise many events to mark the new millennium and these culminated in a concert in Hove Town Hall on July 9th 2000 when all three bands combined to give the first performance of South Down Pictures. The composer spent much of his childhood amongst the South Downs, a range of hills in Sussex which runs parallel to the sea. Opening with a strong unison passage, interrupted briefly by faster figures based on the interval of a fifth, South Down Picturesdevelops with an often-passionate legato melody. Reaching a climax, this is then followed by the main vivo section of the work, whose main theme is based on the earlier ‘fifth’ figures. A bridge passage leads to a short chorale figure and a rhythmic climax which dissolves into a plaintive cornet solo over staccato chords. This theme is taken up by the whole band and leads back to a recapitulation of the main theme and earlier material. The cornet tune returns triumphantly in the major key before the opening unison passage reappears to provide a stirring coda. / Niveau : 4 / Pièce de concert / Répertoire / Brass Band

Let the Trumpet Sound is a collection of 22 pieces from the great masters of three centuries in easy to moderately difficult arrangements for trumpet and organ by Jan van Beekum. With works by Purcell, Telemann, Handel, Bach, and others, the focus of the book is clearly in the Baroque era. But the Classical and Romantic periods are also well represented. The solemn character of many of the pieces makes them ideal for performance in church, but they are also ideal for formal concerts and recital evenings. Depending on the occasion, the organ accompaniment included in the music can also be played on the piano. The accompanying CD can be used for practice-or whenever an accompanist isn't available. Par HENZE HANS WERNER. “Requiem, 9 sacred concertos for piano solo, trumpet and large chamber orchestra” is the title of the original work of which Henze said: “These nine instrumental pieces speak of the fears and needs of mankind today; of sickness and death, of love and loneliness.” Three movements of this extremely demanding and complex work - Rex tremendae, Lacrimosa and Sanctus - have here been skilfully arranged for the organ by the composer Moritz Eggert. This arrangement, which is now often played in churches, places great demands upon the musicians who perform it – but they can always be sure of producing a deep impact with these three Requiem movements. Par GOODALL HOWARD. Shackelton's Cross was inspired by a painting created in 1957 by the English artist Edward Seago (1910-1974). The title refers to a cross which was erected to the memory of Sir Ernest Shackleton, who led a number of explorations to the Antarctic. Shackleton died in 1922 whilst on a Polar expedition, and the cross can be found on a promontory at the entrance to the bay at Grytviken Whaling Station in South Georgia. The painting is owned by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, and was part of an exhibition at Buckingham Palace from October 2011 to April 2012. Originally scored for oboe, trumpet and small orchestra, Daniel Hall's sensitive arrangement follows the composer's alternative version for solo trumpet and organ, created for Crispian Steele-Perkins (trumpet) and David Goode (organ). / Répertoire / Ensemble de Cuivres
