These studies have been written to provide the ambitious student with material with which to carry on beyond the point where most methods and study books leave off, after which point the player is either compelled to continue on his own or is left with the idea that, having conquered all of the material at hand, he is well equipped to enter the ranks of professional players. However, these days the demands made upon brass players are beyond anything contained in the older methods, material which, however necessary for the student to conquer during the first years of study, was certainly never intended to develop the player to the point of present-day demands upon his lip, tongue, and breath. The pieces in this book were written as studies, not as musical compositions, that include, in more or less profusion, such figures as the student will be apt to meet with during the course of an active career. The studies are generally tuneful and pleasant in character. This book is not intended for beginners or students who have not already developed a good technique and strong embouchure by their work in the methods such as Arban´s and St. Jacome´s. Par VAN DER ROOST JAN. ‘Toccata Festiva’ was commissioned in 1994 by the Dutch Brass Band Championships. The wind band version was made a year later by the composer himself. Historically speaking, the toccata is considered to be one of the first independent instrumental forms for keyboard instruments. Originally the toccata was typically more or less improvised, later this musical form was given a more regulated structure. Both elements are used in the ‘Toccata Festiva’: on the one hand the different themes are developed freely, on the other, the piece has an orderly structure. It is in a three part form (quick-slow-quick) and includes both strong rhythmical figures and broad melodic lines. The words and lyrics of the Christmas Carol From Highest Heaven I Come To Tell were written by the great Martin Luther (1483-1546) and can be found in The Hymns of Martin Luther. Martin Luther expressed radical views which began the reformation movement. His followers protested at the treatment given to Martin Luther, the event from which the term 'Protestant' was derived. It was first published in Joseph Klug's Gesangsbuch in around 1535.
