intermediate/advanced
drummer to improve
musical, technical
control and reading
ability, and presents
several rhythmic styles,
such as funk, jazz and
Latin. I'm not trying to
educate you on the
'correct' Cuban or
Brazilian grooves, but
have used this music as
an inspiration for
different phrashings and
concepts. In the notes
you can find book
recommendations to
explore the styles fully.
Please feel free to use
the material creatively,
like repeating bars when
you feel like it. You can
also use the pieces for
advanced sight reading,
but I suggest that you
take time to look
carefully at the dynamics
and stickings. All the
stickings are basedon a
right handed player
(please reverse them if
you are left handed). The
basic concept is to have
rhythmic compositions
with basic classical
notation and technique,
that you can play on a
drumset or on a practice
pad with your feet
stompin' at the floor.
The first part is snare
and bassdrum with hi-hat
foot suggestions. Later
in the book hi-hat (with
stick) and snarerim are
added. The advantage of
these concepts is that
playing through these
etudes is very closely
related to what is going
on in modern music.
Especially important for
players in Jazz, Rock and
Latin, but also very
useful for a classical
percussionist who needs
solid music training. The
last part of this book is
a few pages of technique
studies and rhythmic
concepts that is related
to the compositions. The
purpose is not to include
all basic strokes and
principles (there are
already many great books
for that) but to show you
some concepts that I have
found useful and special
through my years of
playing and teaching.

blazer, both as a singer
and guitarist, but also
as a commercial
phenomenon, for he was
the first blues musician
to establish the
tremendous appeal that
blues, as played and sung
by rural African American
folk, had for the
record-buying public. It

Lemon’s records
paved the way for a host
of other solo rural blues
musicians to record in
his wake and made the
record companies more
willing to give other
musicians a chance, in
the hopes of achieving
similar

Lemon
’s record sales
weren’t what made
him a great musician,
though - that could only
be attributed to his
startlingly virtuosic
guitar - playing and
soulful singing,
developed over years of
busking, building on his
natural gifts with a
great deal of practice
and work. In the Guitar

presents transcriptions,
in standard notation and
tablature, of 22 of
Lemon’s greatest
performances, with an

examining Lemon’s

in spectacular landscape
towards the southern end
of the Rocky Mountains
and is a popular tourist
resort for skiing and
hiking. The Academy plays
an important part in the
life of the area and
serves as a base for the
USAFA Band, one of the
professional bands
forming part of the
musical life of the U.S.
Air Force. The suite is
in three movements: 1.
The Springs (fanfare) -
“The Springsâ€
is the local residents'
name for the town, and
this first movement
starts with a stirring
fanfare for brass and
percussion, opening with
bold unison horns. The
rest of the brass join in
and woodwind add
decorative figures. After
a short change of style,
the opening material
reappears to close the
movement. 2. Seven Falls
- Seven Falls is a
spectacular waterfall
near to the town which
cascades 181 feet in
seven distinct steps down
a solid cliff of pikes
peak granite. In this
movement, high woodwinds
describe the sparkling
water as it descends to a
popular lookout post near
the bottom of the falls.
3. Pikes Peak - To the
north-west of the town
and reaching an altitude
14,110 feet, Pikes Peak
is the farthest east of
the big peaks in the
Rocky Mountain chain,
which contributed to its
early fame among
explorers and pioneers,
and made it the symbol of
the 1859 Gold Rush to
Colorado with the slogan,
“Pikes Peak or
Bust.†It is the
second-most visited
mountain in the world
behind Japan's Mount
Fuji. This atmospheric
movement describes the
majesty of the mountain
and is based around the
fanfare from the first
movement. Opening on a
solitary bassoon, it is

Marsling Octafuzzdrive
– a pedal as
distinctive as its sound.
The Beings at IAM take a
modern spin on the
discontinued '70s era
fOXX, enhanced with two
interstellar
modifications. First, the
octave-up effect is now
at your feet, offering
on-the-fly versatility
with a footswitch.
Additionally, a tone
control toggle switch has
been incorporated,
empowering players to
select from three unique
tonal profiles. The
Marsling stands out as
the epitome of
versatility within the
Interstellar galaxy. The
Marsling Octafuzzdrive is
a recreation of the fOXX
Tone Machine, first
released in 1971 and
discontinued in 1978. The
Tone Machine is a thick
fuzz that uses a phase
spliter and complementary
rectifier to create an
octave overtone. The Tone
Machine has a lot in
common with the Fender
Blender, but with a more
pronounced octave and
smoother tone, as well as
the ability to disable
the octave by turning off
half of the phase
splitter. And the tone is
not unlike the Superfuzz,
although it uses a
different method of
octave generation to get
there. The Marsling is
faithful to the original,
but with two added
modifications. First, the
octave switch for octave
up is on a footswitch for
on and off capabilities
instead of a toggle
switch. The second
modification is the tone
control. The tone control
of the original is
somewhat similar to the
Big Muff, but many people
find it's difficult to
get good sounds from the
treble side of the
rotation. By increasing
the value of the
treble-side tone
capacitor, it improves
the usability. A switch
has been added to let you
choose between two
different capacitors in
addition to the

Metropolitan District of
Sandwell prior to his
appointment to
Staffordshire. He has
long experience as a
conductor, particularly
in the choral and band
fields and also wide
experience as an
adjudicator and examiner.
He has written
prolifically for bands
and orchestras and his
didactic publications are
used in many countries.
He has over eighty
published compositions
and arrangements, many of
which have been broadcast
on radio or television.
His commissioned works
include the cantata David
and Goliath which was
first performed at the
Royal Festival Hall,
Oregon Overture for wind
orchestra, Landscapes,
Sinfonietta No 2, Wessex
Dances and A Castle
Suite. Stuart Johnson has
recently completed
several commissions,
funded by National
Lottery grants, for bands
in Cumbria, the Isle of
Wight, and Staffordshire.
Requiem for Soprano,
Chorus and Orchestra, was
premiered successfully in
front of a capacity
audience in Lichfield
Cathedral in March 1997,
and received its first
London performance at St.
John's Smith Square in
March 1998. This
prestigious venue also
saw the first performance
of Songs and Sonnets for
unaccompanied mixed choir
in 2001. Stuart Johnson
has written extensively
for the theatre, his
music for the production
of Anna of the Five Towns
was used for both the
radio and television
adaptations His music
ranges in style from the
evocative and demanding
Sinfonietta for Wind
Orchestra, which has
received many
performances since its
premiere in the Royal
Festival Hall, including
a broadcast by the Band
of the Scots Guards, to
his ubiquitous Bandstand
Boogie which has set feet
tapping all over the
world. Apart from the
latter his most performed
work is probably Circus
Suite which was the
British Youth Band
Championship test piece
in 1980. Northumbrian
Suite and Landscapes have
also been used as
National Brass Band
Championship test pieces.
The Flint Knappers
commissioned as a test
piece for the 1998 East
Anglian Band Festival was
selected as a test piece
for the 1999 Australian

became interested in the
work of Plato through my
friend and collaborator,
the writer and
philosopher Paul
Woodruff. Paul's new
translation, with
Alexander Nehamas, of the
Symposium gave me
insights into ancient
Greek ways of thinking
about Love, Beauty, and
Wisdom -- and managed to
keep the earthy, and
often bawdy side of it
all in full view. But
their new translation of
Plato's later dialogue
Phaedrus went even
further: the beauty of
the speeches is
breathtaking, and the
discourse itself is
enough to keep one awake
at night. Basically the
Great Speech of Socrates
in the Phaedrus dialogue
has to do with the place
of Eros in the world, and
with the conflict in the
soul between fleshly
pleasure and philosophic
discovery. I will not
attempt to encapsulate
this brilliant discourse
in a program note:
suffice it to say that
reading it gave rise to
my two-sided work for
clarinet, violin, and
piano, Phaedrus. The
first movement represents
the Philosophic life, and
is thus subtitled
Apollo's Lyre (Invocation
and Hymn). It begins with
an unaccompanied melody
for the clarinet, which
(after a pair of
harp-like flourishes for
the piano, expands into
an accompanied canon. The
voices in the dialogue
(clarinet and violin)
follow each other by a
prescribed number of
beats, but the music is
totally devoid of any
meter at all. The piano,
representing the lyre,
accompanies this lyric
love-feast with repeated
strummed chords. The
canon has three large
sections, and ends with
violin echoing the
unaccompanied clarinet
invocation as the sound
of the lyre fades. The
second movement, called
Dionysus' Dream-Orgy
(Ritual Dance) presents,
after a brief
introduction, another
kind of unmetered music.
Rather than long lyric
flights of philosophic
song, however, this time
we hear a unison dance of
unbridled energy and
sensual transport. The
piece soon forms itself
into a loose arch form,
with contrasting metered
dance sections divided by
the unison unmetered orgy
tune. Midway through the
movement, Apollo's melody
returns from the first
movement, but it is a
temporary reminiscence.
The orgiastic dance
returns, reaches a
climax, and ends with a
stomping of feet. While
Plato asserts that a
proper balance between
lust and reason is
necessary in all men, he
(naturally) gives the nod
to Philosophy as the
better choice in which to
live. Not so in my music:
the two sides are meant
to coexist and to
complement each other. No
sides are taken. Phaedrus
was commissioned of the
Verdehr Trio by Michigan
State University. It is
dedicated to the Vedehr
Trio with great affection
