This recording
of Gregorian Chant from
the Gloriæ Dei
Cantores Schola
celebrates the Feast of
the Resurrection, which
is rooted in the earliest
centuries of Christian
worship. This celebration
of celebrations is a time
for rebirth, and this
recording reflects that
sense of personal renewal
and joy. The Chants of
Easter includes the
Propers of Easter Day and
Gregorian chants for the
octave of Easter---daily
services that are part of
the week-long celebration
of the Easter miracle.
These chants are conveyed
with careful attention to
subtleties in the ancient
Gregorian notation,
inviting listeners to
share the experience of
Christ's resurrection in
all its richness.

“Fren
ch composer and
conductor, Henri Tomasi
(1901-1971) published
Gregorian Variations on a
Salve Ragina 1964. As
with his other wind
compositions, Gregorian
Variations for Trumpet
and String Orchestra and
Organ reduction was
well-received by
audiences. Tomasi was
born in Marseille, but
his Father and Mother
were originally from La
Casinca in Corsica.
Despite being pressured
in to musical studies by
his parents, Tomasi
dreamed of becoming a
sailor, and during the
summer, he stayed with
his Grandmother in
Corsica where he learnt
traditional Corsican
songs. However, in 1921,
he began his studies at
the Paris Conservatoire
and went on to become a
high profile composer and
conductor. Tomasi did not
forget his Corsican
routes, often
incorporating themes of
the songs he had learnt
during the summers with
his Grandmother into his
compositions. Gregorian
Variations on a Salve
Regina is a highly
unusual and modern work
based on an old Marian
Hymn (a song for the
Virgin Mary). The
variations exploit
tonality, rhythm and
structure amongst other
aspects. This Tomasi
piece is suitable for
advanced trumpeters,
providing an exciting,
alternative addition to
the instrument's
repertoire.â€.

Eero Sipila was an
organist by training. His
liking for Gregorian
chant left its mark on
his compositions in the
form of stylistic
borrowings or at least
reflections. In one of
his letters Sipila
mentioned as his main
work the quartet that was
to be the last thing he
wrote. The name Lux
aeterna is a reference to
the section in the
Gregorian mass, melodic
motifs from which
dominate the entire
quartet. There is no
trace of the modernistic
tendencies of the works
composed in the 1960s,
but the pungent seconds
harmonies characteristic
of Sipila are all
there.

About 40
compositions, including
half for accompanying and

currently in the catalog
of young Polish composer
Katarzyna Danel (born
1992). After several
national composition
competitions, she won the
13th International

Musica Sacra Nova with
her Misericordias Domini
for eight-part mixed
choir a cappella. The
complex spiritual a
cappella choir is based
on the Gregorian chant of
the same name (Psalm
89,2). Three principal
structures are
characteristic of this
Latin-language choral
piece: on the one hand,
aleatoric sound clouds in
major pentatonic scales,
soundally supported by
long-held organum-like
notes taken from the
Gregorian choral melody;
As well as a
renaissance-like
polyphony, which is
linked with modern
harmony; And finally long
static chords that blend
into harmony and space. A
wonderfully
mystical-spherical
composition, which also
gives the individual
performer the possibility
of individual design
through the ad libitum
passages marked in the
sheet music.

On the
occasion of the
quincentenary of
Reformation Day in 2017,
the composer Enjott
Schneider thoroughly
studied Martin Luther the
individual and all his
contradictions. The
result is a brilliant,
demanding organ symphony
which is perfect for
concerts on the subject
of Reformation and Martin
Luther.The composer
describes the five
movements of the symphony
as follows:'1st
movement:Wir glauben all
an einen Gott with its
quintuplet-like beginning
is very Gregorian in
style, outlining the
range of Lutheran
emotionalism between the
Middle Ages and the
modern era. The
irrationality of faith
ultimately has priority
over any thought and
evidence. At the
beginning of the
movement, sounds of
knocking on wood remind
of the nailing of the
Ninety-Five Theses to the
doors of churches in
Wittenberg. The chorale
melody sometimes hides
with an almost rough
medieval saltarello,
referring to Luther's
robustness and vitality
with which he knew to
carry away even common
people.2nd movement:In
1530, the electoral
prince of Saxony
presented to Luther at
Coburg Castle the golden
signet ring with the
Luther rose which became
the symbol of his
theology of grace. A
white heart with black
cross is fixed on a
five-petalled rose. To
him, white is the colour
of angels and ghosts,
black stands for the pain
of crucification: The
just shall live by faith,
but by faith in the
Crucified. But the fact
that the rose and the
heart are the dominating
symbols shows how
Catholic Marian piety
remained an ingredient of
Luther's spirituality
throughout his life. In
line with the dominant
five-petal structure of
the rose, this movement
was composed, to a large
extent, in accordance
with the floating,
lyrical rhythm in 5/8
time.3rd movement:The
omnipresence of death and
dying - from the plague
and war to the
never-ending dangers of
daily life - was an
essential part of the
world view of that time.
Fears ensued that might
heighten into the
grotesque, e.g. in the
pictures of Hieronymus
Bosch. The Danse macabre
was a popular motif in
those years. Luther's
chorale Mitten wir im
Leben sind / mit dem Tod
umfangen from 1524
(Enchiridion from Erfurt)
is based on the Gregorian
chant Media vita in morte
sumus created in France
around 750 and, with its
idea of transience,
inspired a simplistic
air.4th movement:The
famous confession
delivered at the Diet of
Worms in 1521, I stand
here and can say no more.
God help me. Amen, are
not Luther's words but
the version later used as
text for a pamphlet.
However, it represents
quite plainly the
straightforwardness and
inevitability of his
mission. Musically, it
was made into a perpetuum
mobile, i.e. a dogged,
ostinato and never-ending
musical air.5th
movement:The Mighty
Fortress, on the other
hand, is one of the great
symbols of Martin Luther
which, with its shining C
major key, embodies the
Protestant ideology and
willful nature of the
Reformation unlike any
other song. Heinrich
Heine called it the
Marseille anthem of the
Reformation, Friedrich
Engels the Marseillaise
of the Peasants' Wars.
This disputability is not
thought through to the
end but rather
interrupted: With a
jubilant birdcall version
of the melody, the finale
shows a rather
chamber-music-like side
of the ideals of freedom
of Christians.'.

This setting
is characterized by the
use of Gregorian chant
and melodious lines. The
simple, sonorous and
melodic treatment, even
in the individual voice
parts, with its
accompanying piano
figuration, is
reminiscent of the
treatment of Gregorian
chant in French choral
music of the 19th
century. But Matsushita
has found a tonal
language entirely his
own, with the use of
sparsely employed
modulations, short,
flashing dissonances
(especially between the
melodies of the choir and
the piano accompaniment),
and through the
surprising use of
chromatic intervals. The
piece is quite accessible
for all girl's and
women's choirs, and the
piano accompaniment can
also be performed by an
organ.

Matsushita
has conceived his setting
of the Pentecost sequence
entirely in the
Renaissance polychoral
tradition. He employs the
full choir (within
individual choirs divisi
passages also
occasionally occur)
solely for magnificent
sounding climaxes at
conclusions, prior to
these occurrences he
repeatedly combines
groups of voices or he
allows individual choirs
to sing, effectively, in
alternation. This type of
reduction is even carried
over to quasi Gregorian
passages sung by one
voice in unison. The
piece is tonal
throughout, with
occasional diatonic
seasoning. The
consistently homophonic
setting is oriented
towards the declamation
of the Latin text.
Melodically it is in the
style of modal, Gregorian
structures, without
quoting the well-known
sequence. A fast,
rhythmically syncopated
declamatory section
introduces, the
dramaturgically
appropriate climax to the
solemn conclusion, which,
molto legato, returns
once again with large
upward swings to the text
of the first strophe.
Matsushita writes in a
comfortable vocal range
so that the work can be
sung, at the same time,
in both a relaxed and
grandiose manner. For
large choirs, even for
oratorio choirs with only
limited experience in a
cappella singing, this
piece is aptly suited for
performance and the music
is both grateful and
brings much joy for
singers.

Modern
French composer, organist

Langlais (1907-1991)

won many prizes. He is
best remembered for his
Masses and Organ works,
Nine Pieces being no

compositional uses of
Gregorian chant and
polymodal harmonies. The
Nine Pieces are entitled;
1) Song of Sorrow, 2)
Song of Joy, 3) Song of
Peace, 4) Heroic Song, 5)
In quiet Joy, 6) Out of

Enjo
tt Schneider, professor
of music theory and film
composition at the Munich
Academy of Music, is one
of the most versatile
composers of our time.
His oeuvre ranges from
classical choral and
instrumental works via
the opera to musicals and
film music. At the age of
19, Schneider got his
first job as an organist
and has since felt
connected to church music
as well. His work Rorate
caeli is based on the
Gregorian responsory of
the same name.
Originating in the 17th
century, this chant was
handed down from France
and is characterised by
its fresh melody and
simplicity. In this work,
Schneider skilfully
combines old and new
elements of music. He
sets the Gregorian chant
as a canon, giving it a
light and joyful
character which is
contrasted by a dark
organ sound with a mystic
undertone, heralding the
great secret of Advent.
An interesting work that
expresses the joyful
anticipation of, and the
secrets of Christmas.
