poems by Franz Liszt. His
own symphonic poem
“Danse
macabre†reflects
not only his affinity to
medieval superstitions
but also constitutes a
tribute to Liszt’s
“Totentanzâ€.<

macabre†is based
on the eponymous song
Saint-Saëns composed
in 1872 after Henri
Cazalis’ poem. At
its premiere, the work
was not well-received; in
fact it was booed,
possibly due to the
“diabolicâ€
solo violin playing on an
E-string that was tuned
down to E-flat, which the
audience might have
misinterpreted as being
out of tune. However
within ten years the work
had become so popular
that Saint-Saëns
quoted some of its
musical themes in
“The Carnival of
the Animalsâ€. Since
the composer’s
death, “Danse
macabre†is among
the works most often
mentioned in connection
with the theatrical face
of death found in popular
mortuary cult.

This work
for solo violin was
commissioned by American
Violinist Wendy Case for
her CD of works for solo
violin by living
composers titled The
Tiger and The Clover
released in February 2022
by the label Blue
Griffin. Just as Wendy
proposed this new work, I
heard the news that the
Polish poet Adam
Zagajewski who I had met
through mutual friends,
had died. I had long
admired his essays that
thoughtfully and with
grace and ease, merged
the past with the present
in the way that only a
poet can, lifting the
reader onto a plain of
images, thoughts and
words that conjure
seamless journeys through
time, space and the
imagination. His essays
often refer to the music
of Bach and I found
myself writing this piece
inhabited by the physical
pleasure of playing
Bach's suites for Lute
transposed for the
guitar. The piece
revolves around a simple
repetitive semiquaver
motif playing with the
Aeolian mode starting on
G. The motif ascends and
descends playing with and
against the low G string
to extend itself away
from the home mode, then
returning and gradually
extending into quavers to
reach the key of E major
while hinting at A minor.
The repetitive nature of
the piece invites the
player to explore
variations in sound
quality and dynamics and
to enjoy the effect of
the notes playing against
each other as they rise
and fall away but always
maintain a constant tempo
and rhythm.

Quedlinburg. Born in
Berlin, she was one of
ten surviving children of
the royal family of King

I had
written the Cadman
Requiem in 1989 for the
Hilliard Ensemble in
memory of my friend and
sound engineer Bill
Cadman, who was killed in
the Lockerbie air crash.
His death affected me
very deeply and, pending
a recording of this
piece, Manfred Eicher
asked if I might like to
develop an instrumental
work from this, using the
same instrumentation for
accompaniment and
retaining the same
opening bars as part of a
new ECM album. The piece
is after the Requiem
therefore in the musical
sense of being based on
it, in the chronological
sense of following on
from it, and in the
spiritual sense of
representing that state
which remains after
mourning is (technically)
over. I wrote the piece
in Venice in September
1990 and finished it in
Oslo on the day of the
recording, where I added
the electric guitar of
Bill Frisell. This, I
felt, blended
particularly well with
low strings (2 violas and
cello). Coincidentally,
having used certain
distortion effects on the
guitar, we found that we
were recording on the
twentieth anniversary of
the death of Jimi
Hendrix. Within the music
I use one or two modified
extracts from the Cadman
Requiem itself, and from
its common source
Invention of Tradition,
for which Bill Cadman had
done the sound design.The
piece is dedicated to the
two Bills (Cadman and
Frisell).

natural harmonics or on
open strings. There are
no harmonics higher than

Quartets I attempted
sectional, agglutinative
forms: in my Fourth I
return to the
conventional four
movement form of my First
Quartet of 1962. Both
works build up (as in the
19th century symphony) to
the Finale, thus making
it the most substantial
movement, which provides
a climax to the work. The
First Movement has, in
both works, only the
status of an
Introduction. But there
the consciously willed
resemblances end. This
Introduction follows the
Second Quartet to a
certain extent, in that
it provides a sort of
'cauldron', from which
elements to be used later
can all be plucked. Its
opening will reappear at
various points throughout
the work, most completely
at a climatic point of
the Finale (bar 110).
Subsequent material will
be more fully worked out
in the second movement, a
large Scherzo. The
Introduction concludes
with an unusually placed
violin cadenza (itself a
rare feature in a string
quartet, the idea lifted
from Elliott Carter's
First Quartet) of which
the opening is to
reappear halfway through
the Finale. The Scherzo
(which follows attacca)
does not have at its
centre a discretely
characterized Trio: a
figure in double-stops
like a distant fanfare
supplies the necessary
contrast of a second
idea. The Slow Movement
has a secondary idea
first heard on the cello
and marked appassionato:
an agitato middle section
recalls the opening of
the work, but in a
formulation which will be
found closely to
anticipate its
reappearance in the
Finale. The Finale is
planned on a broad scale.
Only after a fully worked
exposition of both
primary and secondary
material does the opening
of the whole work return,
now in a greatly extended
form. Then, at bar 140,
the tune of the violin
cadenza is first
harmonized in fanfare
style on the upper
instruments, then
presented as a chorale on
the lower ones, with a
rushing semiquaver
accompaniment above. This
climatic activity mounts
to the very end. The work
is dedicated to the
Chilingirian Quartet, old
friends over many years.

Programme note: In 1999
my friend, American
guitar virtuoso David
Starobin, wanted me to
write a concerto for
guitar and orchestra. It
quickly dawned on me,
that this commission
presented a golden
opportunity to contribute
to the time-honoured
tradition of composing a
series of variations on
Nicolo Paganini's famous
24th Caprice for violin
solo, a work which itself
is a set of variations.
The 16 bar (with the
first 4 bars repeated)
theme is not particularly
sophisticated or
intricate, but its
inherent simplicity and
logic just grow on you,
almost to the point
ofdistraction - and the
secret behind it being
hauled through the
wringer by composers as
disparate as Liszt,
Brahms, Rachmaninoff and
Lutoslawski is perhaps
found in its - what I'll
call, with a quick
nervous look over my
shoulder: brilliant
banality. You can do
anything with that tune,
it'll always be
recognizable and just
there, however much you
maul it. The piece
(subtitled Guitar
Concerto no 2) was
written pretty quickly,
premiered and
subsequently recorded for
Bridge Records with David
and the Odense Symphony
Orchestra conducted by
Jan Wagner, and everybody
was happy. But the story
didn't end there, and it
must be the ultimate
proof of the durability
of the theme, not to
mention the flexibility
and far-sightedness of
David Starobin , when he
14 years later suggested
why not transcribe the
solo part for piano?. The
idea appealed to me
immediately. One thing
was clear from the
beginning: the new
version could in no way
sound like a
transcription. My aim was
to end up with a
solo-part sounding like
were it the one-and-only,
the real thing, if you
like. The orchestral
score remains exactly the
same in both cases. Both
versions, the two
Paganini Variations, are
comparable to a set of
twins, not quite
identical, but almost.
And both each others's

Director of Choirs at
Chetham’s School
of Music until 2013. He
continues as Musical
Director of the Chester
Bach Singers, a Vocal
Tutor at Manchester
University, Chairman of
the Finzi Friends and a

The toccata
genre has undergone great
change since BachÂ’s
time. Originally denoting
works of recitative or
improvisatory character,
since the 19th century
the emphasis has been on
a continuous pulsating
rhythm. In
ProkofievÂ’s
masterpiece, composed in
1912, this rhythm grows
into a hammering motoric
drive that dispenses with
developed themes or
motifs. That which seems
fascinating and
enthralling to us today
came as a shock to the
critics of that time. But
there were also
proponents such as
Prokofiev's friend
Nikolai Myaskovsky, who

Zemlinsky's music was
long unjustly
overshadowed by what was
regarded as the
“more
progressive†Second
Viennese School. Although
Zemlinsky was close
friends with its
protagonist Arnold
Schönberg, he never
did take the latter's
radical step into
dodecaphony. At the same
time, he composed works
that were no less
original or fully
fledged. Composed between
1913 and 1915, his Second
String Quartet in
particular pushed the
contemporaneous
understanding of form and
tonality to its limits.
With just one movement
but spanning over 1,200
measures, this
multi-faceted work
numbers among the most
significant contributions
to the genre of the time
and has long merited a
critical new edition. The

Zemlinsky's music was
long unjustly
overshadowed by what was
regarded as the
“more
progressive†Second
Viennese School. Although
Zemlinsky was close
friends with its
protagonist Arnold
Schönberg, he never
did take the latter's
radical step into
dodecaphony. At the same
time, he composed works
that were no less
original or fully
fledged. Composed between
1913 and 1915, his Second
String Quartet in
particular pushed the
contemporaneous
understanding of form and
tonality to its limits.
With just one movement
but spanning over 1,200
measures, this
multi-faceted work
numbers among the most
significant contributions
to the genre of the time
and has long merited a
critical new edition. The
