Het verhaal is opgebouwd rond een mismaakt muzikaal genie dat gemaskerd in de krochten van de Parijse Opéra leeften invloed probeert uit te oefenen op de carrière en het leven van Christine, de jonge zangeres op wie hij verliefd is. Deze dramatische musical leverde een aantal prachtige bekende melodieën op, waarvan Lorenzo Bocci de volgendein zijn eenvoudige arrangement verwerkte: The Phantom of the Opera, All I Ask of You, Masquerade en The Music of the Night.

Aggression, despair, but also hope for peace can be clearly heard within this work. In Banja Luka Jan de Haan reflects aspects of the former Yugoslavia, stricken by a civil war which brought terrible suffering to the people of this area. Banja Luka was written for the International Horn Festival in Leeuwarden in the Netherlands.

Banja Luka is een stad in Bosnie-Herzegovina en kent een rijke geschiedenis, wat blijkt uit de vele bewaard gebleven bezienswaardigheden. Mededoor zijn strategische ligging heeft Banja Luka achtereenvolgens onder Romeins, Turks en Oostenrijks bewind gestaan en ontwikkelde het zich in de loop van de eeuwen tot een belangrijk handelscentrum. De stad werd in 1969 dooreen aardbeving grotendeels verwoest en is daarna weer in moderne stijl opgebouwd. De naam Banja Luka betekent bad van Lukas. Grieg’s suite from ‘Sigurd Jorsalfar’ remains one of his most popular works and here, arranged by Wil van der Beek, we are pleased to be able to offer a version for Concert Band. This one will be a sure-fire hit with any fans of classical music.

In 1872 - Twee jaar voor hij Peer Gynt gegon te werken - componeerde Grieg de muziek bij het toneelstuk Sigurd Jorsalfar (Sigurd de kruisvaarder) van Bjørnsterne Bjørnsons. Enkele jaren later voegde hij de drie belangrijksteorkestgedeel ten samen tot een gelijknamige concertsuite. In The King's Hall is overigens de orkestversie van een inn 1867 door Grieg geschreven gavotte voor viool en piano. Wil van der Beek schreef de versie voor armonieorkest.

In der Königshalle erweckt die Atmosphäre der historischen Szenerie, in der sich das mittelalterliche Drama Sigurd Jorsalfar abspielt, zum Leben. In der Bühnenmusik wird mit diesem Stück der zweite Akt eingeleitet, in dem die beiden Brüder zum Wortgefecht um den Königsthron in der Königshalle antreten. Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson influença profondément la littérature norvégienne du XIXème siècle. En 1872, Grieg écrivit une musique de scène pour la nouvelle pièce de thé tre de son ami, intitulée Sigurd Jorsalfar (‘‘Sigurd, le croisé’’ ). La musique comporte huit pièces, dont deux chorals. En 1892, Grieg remaniait trois de ces pièces qu’il faisait publier un an après, sous forme de suite séparée, Op. 56. La première pièce, Prélude : dans le hall du roi (In The King’sHall) développe un thème solennel qui chemine vers des mélodies plus intimistes auxquelles les bois apportent une coloration nostalgique.

My dedication to the string instruments has been a constant throughout my compositional career and I knew that sooner or later the time would come to compose a concerto for violin and orchestra. That moment came in the autumn of 2002 and after ten months of uninterrupted work I finished it in August of 2003. It is a work structured similarly to the traditional concertos. An important impetus for the elaboration of my concerto was due to the ill-fated violinist Ginette Neveu. Her version of Sibelius' Concerto has always stayed with me. For this reason the first movement, Moderato-Allegro, begins with a contemplative atmosphere similar to that of Sibelius' Concerto in which the principal thematic ideas appear tentatively. These ideas, two rhythmic and two melodic, are reaffirmed through a broad development that culminates in an orchestral fullness. A calm, mysterious passage recalls the introduction and after becoming blurred, three bars burst in leading to the rapid section of the movement. Soloist and orchestra engage in a dialectic struggle of a dramatic nature. The agitation subsides leaving only a tranquil and suggestive clarinet phrase. This will be taken up by the soloist who leads up to the movement's most dramatic moment playing an accelerating triplet figure supported by an orchestral pedal in crescendo. From here the soloist's cadenza emerges beginning with soft double notes. It finishes with an ascending progression and the soloist settles into the high register to elicit the orchestra's intervention in a soft and transfigured atmosphere. Once internalised the second movement, Adagio poco sostenuto e leggero begins. It has a solemn character and opens with two trumpet calls answered by the violoncellos and the contrabasses. The violin soloist introduces and plays two nostalgic themes, the first in the low register and the second, more extensive, in the middle register. The soft and delicate Misterioso e leggero begins with the violin singing on high. The rhythm of the constant quaver figures gradually accelerates until the soloist provokes a dramatic full orchestra as in a cadenza. Once again, the Calmo, in which the soloist with less and less orchestral attire serenely bids farewell. A rising series of double stops by the soloist serves to initiate the Finale-Scherzo. In 6/8 rhythm and with the character of a rondo it carries us along in a carefree, virtuosic ambiance. The principal motives, brief and concise, emerge from the happy, playful theme presented by the soloist. With an intricate progression of rapid sixths in double stops it reaches a tense and somewhat combative moment. However this resolves itself in a diminuendo that the soloist peacefully takes up with the notes re-la to commence the cadenza. This culminates in a series of tied notes to reintroduce the principal theme. A moment of melodic suspension serves as a farewell before the brief and jovial final coda. --The author

A lo largo de mi carrera compositiva mi dedicacion a los instrumentos de cuerda ha sido constante y sabia que, tarde o temprano, llegaria el momento de componer un concierto para violin y orquesta. Este llego en otono de 2002 y, tras diez meses de trabajo ininterrumpido, lo termine en agosto de 2003. Se trata de una obra estructurada de manera similar a los conciertos tradicionales. Un importante impulso a la elaboracion de mi concierto lo debo al recuerdo de la malograda violinista Ginette Neveu. Su version del concierto de Sibelius ha permanecido siempre dentro de mi. Por ese motivo, el primer movimiento Moderato-Allegro se inicia con una atmosfera contemplativa cercana a la del mencionado Concierto, en la que aparecen cautamente las principales ideas tematicas. Con un amplio desarrollo se llega a un lleno orquestal en el que estas ideas -dos ritmicas y dos melodicas- quedan reafirmadas. Un pasaje calmo y misterioso rememora la introduccion. Tras desdibujarse, irrumpen tres compases que nos llevan a la parte rapida del movimiento. Solista y orquesta establecen un combate dialectico de caracter dramatico. La inquietud desaparece hasta una tranquila e insinuante frase del clarinete. Esta sera recogida por el solista, quien, a base de una figuracion de tresillos cada vez mas rapidos apoyada por un pedal de la orquesta in crescendo, conduce hacia el momento mas dramatico del movimiento. De aqui nace la cadenza del solista, que se incia con suaves notas dobles. Finaliza con una progresion ascendente y el solista se coloca en el registro agudo para llamar la intervencion de la orquesta dentro de una atmosfera suave y transfigurada. Interiorizado es el segundo movimiento Adagio poco sostenuto e leggero. Con dos llamadas de las trompas respondidas por los violonchelos y contrabajos inicia el Adagio de caracter grave. El violin solista introduce y canta dos temas nostalgicos. El primero en el registro grave y el segundo, mas amplio, en el medio. Inicia el Misterioso e leggero, de caracter suave y delicado. Con el violin cantando en agudo. La constante figuracion de corcheas acelerara poco a poco el ritmo hasta que el solista a modo de cadenza provocara un dramatico lleno orquestal. De nuevo el Calmo, donde el solista, cada vez con menos ropaje orquestal, se despide serenamente. Una subida de dobles cuerdas a cargo del solista sirve para iniciar el Finale-Scherzo. Este, en ritmo de 6/8 y con caracter de rondo, nos transporta en un clima virtuosistico y despreocupado. Del tema alegre y jugueton presentado por el solista nacen los principales motivos, breves y concisos. Con una intrincada sucesion de rapidas sextas en doble cuerda se llega a un momento crispado y algo combativo que, sin embargo, se resolvera en un diminuendo que el solista recoge apaciblemente con las notas re-la para inciar la cadenza. Esta culmina con un suave rosario de notas en ligado para introducir de nuevo el tema principal. Un momento de suspension melodica sirve como despido antes de la breve y jovial coda final. La obra fue estrenada el 23 de septiembre de 2005 en el Teatre Monumental de Madrid por la Orquesta Sinfonica de RTVE con Markus Placci de solista y Uwe Mund de director. The ensuing problems with the nuclear reactor at Fukushima only increased the misery: a black day in the country’s history…One almost inevitable consequence of such dramatic circumstances is the particular damage suffered by the cultural arts. And so it was in Japan: various high school wind orchestras in the effected areas lost their practice rooms and/or instruments. It will take a long time before the damage suffered is repaired—and it will take great effort to overcome thepsychological effects, too. Focusing on the latter, Yutada Nishida (director of The Bandwagon radio program) asked a few composers for a simple work that could be played by many orchestras. It just so happened that the Osakan Philharmonic Winds (with whom Jan Van der Roost had conducted a concert exclusively of his own works on September 25th) had had a similar idea. This concert saw the baptism of Song of Hope. This piece immediately struck a chord with musicians and audience alike: it begins bleakly in the low register and evolves to a more open, optimistic close. There really is hope for better times!

2011 was een rampzalig jaar voor Japan: op 11 maart teisterde een hevige aardbeving het noordoosten van het land, bracht een enorme tsunami teweeg en veroorzaakte zeer grote schade aan mens en natuur. De daaruit voortvloeiende problemenmet de kernreactor van Fukushima maakten de ellende nog groter: een zwarte pagina in het bestaan van het land ... Dat in dergelijke dramatische omstandigheden ook (en vooral) het culturele bestel een flinke knauw krijgt, ishelaas een haast onvermijdelijke consequentie. Zo ook in Japan: verschillende high school bands in de getroffen regio verloren hun repetitieruimte en/of instrumenten: het zal lang duren voordat de geleden schade is hersteld - enhet zal ook moeite kosten om er mentaal weer bovenop te geraken. Met het oog op dat laatste aspect verzocht Yutaka Nishida (samensteller van het radioprogramma The Bandwagon) een paar componisten om een eenvoudig werkje te schrijvendat speelbaar is door een groot aantal orkesten. Als bij toeval kwam een dergelijk verzoek eveneens van de kant van de OSAKAN Philharmonic Winds, waarmee Jan Van der Roost op 25 september een concert dirigeerde, uitsluitend gewijdaan eigen werken. Daar werd Song of Hope dan ook ten doop gehouden en het werkje sloeg meteen aan bij uitvoerders en publiek: na een tamelijk donkere start in het lage register evolueert het tot een optimistischer en opener slot.Er is inderdaad hoop op betere tijden!

Am 11. März 2011 löste ein heftiges Erdbeben in Japan einen riesigen Tsunami mit desaströsen Folgen für Mensch, Natur auch das kulturelle Leben. Yutaka Nishida vom Radioprogramm The Bandwagon bat daher einige Komponisten, darunter Jan Van der Roost, ein einfaches, für viele Orchester spielbares Werk zu schreiben. Song of Hope beginnt düster im tiefen Register, um sich dann zu einem optimistischeren Schluss hin zu entwickeln. Es gibt sie, die Hoffnung auf bessere Zeiten... !

2011 fut une année tragique pour le Japon : le 11 mars, le nord-est du pays connut un violent tremblement de terre qui entraîna un gigantesque tsunami, occasionnant de nombreuses pertes humaines et de gros dég ts environnementaux. La catastrophe du réacteur nucléaire de Fukushima ajouta encore ces malheurs : une période bien sombre de l’histoire du pays…Des événements aussi dramatiques ont souvent un impact négatif sur les arts culturels. Ce fut le cas au Japon : plusieurs orchestres d’harmonie des collèges des régions affectées perdirent leurs locaux de répétition et/ou leurs instruments. Il faudra beaucoup de temps pour que les choses reviennent la normale - et pour estomperles cicatrices psychologiques. S’intéressant particulièrement celles-ci, Yutada Nishida (directeur du programme radiophonique The Bandwagon) demanda quelques compositeurs d’écrire une œuvre simple pouvant être interprétée par de nombreux orchestres.Il se trouva que l’Harmonie Philharmonique d’Osaka (que Jan Van der Roost avait dirigée lors d’un concert exclusivement composé de ses œuvres, le 25 septembre) avait eu la même idée. Ce concert vit la création mondiale de Song of Hope, qui interpella immédiatement les musiciens et l’auditoire. Cette pièce débute sombrement dans le registre grave avant d’évoluer vers une conclusion plus pétillante, plus optimiste. Il est assurément permis d’espérer des temps meilleurs !

Il 2011 è stato un anno tragico per il Giappone; al devastante terremoto e al non meno catastrofico tsunami dell’11 marzo, sono seguiti i gravi problemi al reattore nucleare di Fukushima. Il settore della cultura in generale, e quello della musica in particolare hanno sofferto immensamente a causa di questi nefasti eventi naturali. Song of Hope è un brano che ha profondamente commosso esecutori e pubblico.Song of Hope inizia nel registro acuto con suoni oscuri e melanconici, ma si sviluppa in un clima di ottimismo, come a voler simboleggiare un futuro più sereno.

Cherubini made his Paris debut with Démophon, which premiered in 1788. Tohru Takahashi has arranged this dramatic overture for concert band, with specific parts for oboe, bassoon and saxophone among others. However, since the important parts are also included as cues in the score, it can be adapted to a more limited instrumentation.

In het jaar 1788 debuteerde de Italiaanse componist Luigi Cherubini in Parijs met zijn opera Demophon. Van de dramatische ouverture schreef Tohru Takahashi een arrangement voor blaasorkest. Bijzondere partijen zijn weggelegd voor hobo, fagot en saxofoon. Omdat de belangrijkste stemmen als cues in de partituur zijn opgenomen, kunt u het werk ook met een kleinere bezetting uitvoeren.

Die Oper Démophon war Cherubinis erstes Werk in Paris und wurde 1788 uraufgeführt. Tohru Takahashi arrangierte die dramatische Ouvertüre aus der Oper für Blasorchester. Besondere Rollen spielen unter anderem Oboe, Fagott und Saxophon. Da die wichtigen Stimmen auch als Stichnoten in der Partitur notiert sind, kann das Stück auch mit einer kleineren Instrumentierung aufgeführt werden.

Cherubini fi t ses débuts Paris avec l’oeuvre Démophon, qui fut créée en 1788. Tohru Takahashi a arrangé cette ouverture dramatique pour orchestre d’harmonie, avec, entre autres, des parties spécifiques pour hautbois, basson et saxophone. Cependant, compte tenu de l’importance de ces parties, celles-ci figurent également sous la forme de petites notes dans d’autres pupitres, ce qui permettra cet arrangement grandiose d’être interprété par un orchestre dont l’instrumentation est réduite.
