Everybody in
the band gets their own
special day in this
creative holiday rock
arrangement of the
familiar tune. The melody
gets traded off from
section to section in a
fairly predictable way
until it's the piano
players turn. Then things
change abruptly and some
funky fun begins. This
leads up to an open solo
section over only 2
chords, and the
background parts sound so
good you could even omit
the solos if desired. A
few bars of piano sets up
the melody again - this
time in a canon - which
leads to a big ending. At
least 12 days of
creativity in one fun and
easy to prepare
chart!

composer writes: The slow
choral-like music which
initiates Adieu was the
result of an image or
almost a dream that I
had. Without being able
to explain why, I
imagined a procession of
people, maybe medieval
munks, wearing large gray
mantles with
Ku-Klux-Klan-like white
cowls on their heads,
something like a funeral
procession. The title
Adieu is partly a comment
on this funeral
procession, but also used
because the piece is
split up by three
slow-ascending glissandi,
a kind of farewell
glissandi which removes
the intervening music.
The first absorbing
glissando is soft and
removes both the slow
funeral choral and the
agitating figures in the
first half of the piece.
The second glissando is
given only to the cello
and crawls out from the
elegiac melodies in the
middle part. The third
and final glissando is
intense and agitating,
and prepares the way for
the end of the piece.
This end primarily deals
with the relationship
fast - slow. This
relationship is turned
topsy turvy: the music
gets faster and faster
until it is so fast that
it suddenly becomes slow,
so slow in fact that it
is very quickly able to
become extremely fast
again.

Cuarteto Casals
approached me with the
idea of illuminating
Beethovens quartets anew,
you can imagine the many
thoughts and feelings
that where going through
my mind: what a joy, what
a great honor What an
intriguing
head-scratcher! How can
you possibly shine a new
light on something that
is already perfect?
Weeks, months went by in
search of a common ground
between the Master and
myself until I finally
found it in the
realization that a word
lays hidden in the St.
Johns hymn that gave
musical notes their
original name: Re, Sol,
Ut, Io (D, G, C, B in
English music notation)
Perfect!
“Resolutioâ€
in Latin means both the
resolution of aproblem
and the re-solution: a
re-blend of many elements
that will eventually
coagulate to make
something new. There was
finally themelodic and a
rhythmical canvas for my
piece. On this canvas I
wrote the story of a
funny little contest,
played on a sunny
Mediterranean square,
between street musicians
and Cuarteto Casals just
minutes before they are
about to go on stage to
perform Beethovens Harp
Quartet. After all the
characters, each in his
own way, had the chance
to tell their story, a
gentle rain starts to
fall, dissolving
(Re-solving) again the
music sheet to eventually
leave us with just a
white piece of paper for
somebody else to continue

ssohn's setting of Psalm
98 was written in a few
weeks to satisfy a
commission in his new
position as general music
director of Prussia and
was premiered by the
Berlin Cathedral Choir on
1 January 1844. As he
neither released the work
for publication nor
produced a vocal score,
his psalm setting did not
appear in print until
after his
death.
For this
edition the authoritative
Mendelssohn specialist
John Michael Cooper drew
primarily on the
autograph score with its
many subsequent
corrections and
amendments. In this way
it differs from many
other editions, which
tend to treat the
autograph as a
subordinate source.
Rounding off the edition
are an informative
Foreword and a detailed
Critical Commentary. The
piano reduction is based
on the first printed
edition, published by F.
Kistner and Evers & Co.
in 1851.

in the spring of 1786 to
fulfill a commission from
Joseph II for performance
during a visit to Vienna
by the Governor-General
of the Netherlands. The
visitors were meant to be
entertained with a short
German and an Italian
musical comedy during a
festival arranged on
short notice in
Schonbrunn Palace. The
choice of composers fell
to Mozart and Salieri.
Both pieces spoofed the
theatrical practices of
the day. Der
Schauspieldirektor, by
Gottlieb Stephanie the
Younger, has a
loosely-constructed plot
that hinges on the vanity
of opera singers and the
empty-headedness of many
traveling companies.
Frank Lustig wants to
create a new theatrical
troupe, for which Herr
Eiler is willing to
supply money, but only on
condition that his lady
friend is allowed to
join. In the course of
the piece, appearances
are made by other ladies
with resonant names who
want to be retained as
singers and who attempt
to outdo each other until
reason is allowed to

Mark Passion, which
probably originated in
the first decade of the
18th century, by a
composer known until now
only as Kaiser, is only
preserved in various
copies. It occupies a
prominent place in Bach's
music library as the only
music for Passion by
another composer which he
performed several times,
usually in different
forms. For the young Bach
in Weimar this St. Mark
Passion was a didactic
piece for learning the
art of the modern
narrative recitative; as
the Leipzig Thomaskantor
he also performed it
(1726). The present
edition reconstructs the
third version, first
performed in Leipzig
(1747), in which Bach
inserted seven arias from
Handel's famous
Brockes-Passion. Only in
this pasticcio did a
direct encounter occur
between him and his
famous compatriot in
London, a real encounter
which Bach longed for,
