One
could see icecold princes
and ladies of the court
weep when he played an
Adagio. Tears even fell
from his own eyes onto
his violin while he was
playing, reported an eye
witness about the
violinist Pietro Nardini,
whose works for string
instruments were hardly
less celebrated than his
emotional playing style.
Once popular examples of
light string quartets
from the early classical
period are available here
in a reliable and
fundamentally revised
reprint based on the
first edition (Florence,
after 1770) and on a
contemporary copy. The
additions willfully added
by Wilhelm Altmann in his
edition (1937) have been
eliminated and many
irregularities
corrected.

Rheinber
ger began work on his
second Symphony during
his visit to Italy with
his wife in 1874. He was
commissioned to write it
by an orchestral society
in Florence - an
indication that his
reputation had already
spread throughout Europe.
The autograph score
contains a poem by his
wife Fanny, which in four
sections expressed the
moods of impressions of
the visit which seem to
underlie the symphony.
Contemporaries praised
particularly the beauty
of the Adagio. The work
is here presented for the
first time in an edition
based critically on the
sources.

Niccolò
Paganini's (1782-1840)
wrote two installments
(Op. 2 and Op. 3) of six
sonatas each for violin
and guitar between 1805
and 1809 while he lived
in Florence with a
guitar-playing
noblewoman. Paganini kept
both his love for the
guitar and the noblewoman
secret, and these twelve
sonatas were written for
more intimate settings
rather than the larger
public performances we
often associate with
Paganini's virtuosity.
Reprint of guitarist
Erwin
Schwarz-Reiflingen's
(1891-1964) edition. Both
Op. 2 and Op. 3 are
available from the
publisher.
