Composer
Note: In 1990, after
eight years in the United
States, I wrote my first
work for solo piano,
titled My Song,
commissioned for Peter
Serkin. At the time, my
primary compositional
concentration was to
develop a melodic and
harmonic style within the
boundaries of Chinese
folk music, which are
mostly in pentatonic
modes, and contemporary
Western Classical music.
As a result, all the four
movements in My
Song were either
based on existing Chinese
folk tunes or written in
their style. I was asked
recently by another
virtuoso pianist friend,
Yefim Bronfman, to write
a work for solo piano.
After the passing of 17
years, I wonder if there
is any change in my
writing. I therefore
titled the new suite
My Other
Song.
There
are four movements in the
composition, the first
three of which are brief
and provide contrast in
character. The theme of
the last movement, the
longest, is based on a
Buddhist chant heard at
the wake for my mother in
February
2005.–Bright
Sheng.

This title
is taken from Dvorak.
However. The models from
which the songs are
derived are clearly
identifiable, as are the
composers from whose
language they have been
derived. The piece
appears to be in one
movement though it is in
fact two with a coda. The
first is French in style,
a sort of Waltz. It is
quick and harks upon the
likes of Francaix and
where its idiom becomes
more advanced, Messaien.
The other is Germanic, a
slow movement with echoes
of German expressionism -
perhaps Richard Strauss,
perhaps Mahler. The two
movements are partly
complete; the cod
reconciles their
differences and completes
them. I see the piece as
my own version of En
blanc et noir.

Hungarian Folk.
In
2014, Chanticleer
commissioned me to make a
new arrangement of the
Hungarian-Romani folk
song Jarba, Mare Jarba
for their 2014 touring
program. Passed down
orally through the Romani
communities, this
beautiful folk song, with
text in a language called
Beas (beh-osh), speaks of
a deep longing to visit
one's homeland, a place
where the singer can
never return. Chanticleer
consists of twelve men
whose vocal ranges span
from low bass to high
soprano, equivalent to
the range of a mixed
choir of women and men. I
composed slow sections of
original material to
represent the singers'
longing to return home;
these are interspersed
with the folk song's
traditional fast
sections. The
incorporated shouts and
calls in the score are
typically found in the
performance of Central
European folk songs. I
hope you enjoy singing
this new version of
Jarba, Mare Jarba that
contains all of the vigor
and excitement of the
Chanticleer version.
PERFORMANCE NOTES All
spoken sounds (indicated
by x noteheads) should be
performed by individuals.
Feel free to elaborate
with more sounds of your
own in the tradition of
Eastern European folk
music. If the piece is
memorized, feel free to
experiment with clapping
on the off-beats of m. 93
to the end. TEXT

Jesus
Reassures His Mother is a
setting of medieval lyric
poetry written
anonymously in the 14th
century. The poet
recounts a vision of the
young Mary rocking the
infant Christ to sleep.
The child requests his
mother to sing a lullaby
but, alas, knowing her
child’s fate she is too
sad to sing. Jesus tells
her that all mothers
worry about their
children’s futures and
insists that she should
sing nevertheless. Mary
recounts the visit of
Gabriel and the events of
Christ’s birth but
reflects how sad it is to
have delivered a child to
such a fate. Jesus
reassures his mother that
he will be with his
father in heaven where
Mary will come to join
Him at the end of time,
there to livein eternal
bliss. At this point Mary
is persuaded by and
echoes her child’s
reassuring words, and she
is joined in this by the
choir (now representing
us all). The vision fades
away in the voice of the
narrator whose loneliness
and longing return. We
learn that it is
Christmas Day. This
setting grows from the
visionary mystical world
inhabited by Julian of
Norwich whose Revelations
of Divine Love provided
the inspiration for a
work Anne Boyd composed
in 1994. The medium has
been expanded from the
Song Company’s six solo
voices used in the
Revelations to the double
motet choir of the Sydney
Philharmonia who
commissioned this work
for their 75th
anniversary. The parts of
the infant Jesus, Mary,
the Narrator and the
angel Gabriel are taken
by choir soloists:
soprano, alto, tenor and
bass. The work is
situated in the context
of Boyd ’s personal
musical aesthetic which
she describes as the
intersection of Christian
Love with Buddhist
silence.
