Havi
ng written over five
hundred choral works,
Salvation is Created,
written in 1914, is
perhaps Pavel Chesnokov's
most famous. Yet
ironically, it was one of
his very last sacred
works before he was
forced to secular
composition by the new

government. This
beautiful arrangement by
James Tranquilla of

a beautiful communion
hymn based on Kievan

Barumba
is an original
composition by former
iTromboni Bass Trombonist
Kenneth Pearce. It was
the very first original
composition written for
the ensemble. Barumba is
a light hearted, playful
Bossa Nova which attempts
to capture a bit of the
droll humour of its
composer! This 3-minute
composition is scored for
4 Tenor Trombones, 1 Bass
Trombone and is suitable
for medium-advanced
performers. Trombone 1
contains a repeated 16
bar improvised solo and
Trombone 3 contains a
high D!

Sinfonietta
was written for large
orchestra with 25 brass
players. The composer was
inspired to write the
work after hearing a
brass band perform and
was excited to write some
fanfares himself. The
work is dedicated To the
Czechoslovak Army. Cory
Mixdorf arranged this
exciting music to the
first movement fanfare
for 8-part Trombone
Ensemble and Timpani. For
advanced performers.

Nabucco is
the opera which
established Verdi's
reputation as a great
composer and even he
realized its importance
as he noted this is the
opera with which my
artistic career really
begins. iTromboni alum
Kenneth Pearce and Andrew
Poirier have skillfully
set the Overture to
Nabucco to highlight the
beautiful melodies and
technical flare in their
arrangement for trombone
quintet (2 altos, 2
tenors, bass). As in the
original, it all begins
with a stately trombone
chorale, hints at the big
melody of Va, pensiero
(the great chorus of the
Hebrew slaves) and
reaches its energetic
conclusion full of gusto!
This arrangement is
suitable for advanced
performers and can be
heard on iTromboni's
debut album: there goes
the neighbourhood.

Stephansdom is
a new composition,
descriptive of the iconic
St. Stephan's Cathedral
in central Vienna. Ryan
Diefendorfer wrote this
work for the Indiana
University Trombone
Ensemble for Bass
Trombone solo and
Trombone Choir (6-part)
to be performed by Carl
Lenthe at the 2012
Eastern Music Festival.
Ryan's work was awarded
the winner of the 2012
Eastern Trombone Workshop
National Composition
Competition.
St.
Stephen's Cathedral, also
known as Stephansdom, is
one of Vienna's most
remarkable city icons.
Dating back to 1137,
Stephandsom towers above
the rest of Vienna's
skyline and has been a
constant presence in the
lives of the Viennese for
nearly one thousand
years. Among the
buildings that the
Viennese find closest to
their hearts, Stephansdom
is certainly one of
them
I.
Groundbreaking The
first movement depicts
the troubles that St.
Stephen's Cathedral had
in getting its
groundbreaking as a
church. The opening of
the piece marks the
celebration of the
Viennese when St.
Stephen's was first
constructed in 1137,
during the Romanesque
era. However, the church
faced many
issues—from being
destroyed by the
Babenberg Empire to being
decimated by a
fire—before the
church began its
construction in the
Gothic style in 1307. The
first movement depicts
these struggles before
resolving to an open
chord.
II.
Steffl Steffl, the
nickname for
Stephansdom's soaring
north tower, is one of
the characteristics of
the cathedral that the
Viennese find so
endearing. This movement
is very upbeat and is
meant to portray the
excitement shared by the
Viennese for this
beautiful addition to
Stephansdom, which was
completed in 1433.
Stephansdom's north tower
is the tallest structure
in Vienna, and distinctly
stands out within
Vienna's
skyline.
II
I. 1945 As World War
II was coming to a close
in 1945, Stephansdom's
roof caught fire from a
neighboring building,
destroying large portions
of the church. One climax
occurs at m.30, which
depicts Stephansdom's
great bell, the Pummerin,
crashing down to the
ground. This movement
depicts the chaotic
nature of the raging fire
of
1945.
IV.
Anton Pilgrim Anton
Pilgrim was the last, and
perhaps most beloved,
architect who worked on
St. Stephen's Cathedral
in the Gothic style. One
of his most famous
projects was the St.
Stephen's organ loft,
which is depicted by an
opening organ-like canon.
The final movement to the
piece ends in a
chorale-like fashion,
demonstrating the
Viennese's love for Anton
Pilgrim, as well as
Stephansdom, one of
Vienna's most iconic
sights.
This
work of 12 minutes in
length is appropriate for
advanced performers.

Partite is a
continuous--that is,
connected--set of
variations on the chorale
melody Herzliebster Jesu,
was hast do verbrochen
translated in some modern
hymnals Ah Holy Jesus,
how has Thou offended?.
The basic form of the
work is rather
traditional--a theme
played by bass trombone
preceded by an
introduction and followed
by a series of
variations. A more
fundamental aspect,
however, is the shape
created by a succession
of moods: the
introduction is
questioning, or perhaps
questing; the statement
of the theme is quiet but
troubled; the three
variations following
become gradually more
mocking and sarcastic,
but are overcome by the
serene and accepting
final section, which
incorporates one of J.S.
Bach's most moving
harmonizations of the
chorale. Partite was
commissioned by the
University of Georgia
Trombone Choir, Dr.
Phillip Jameson,
Director. It is dedicated
to the memory of Mark A.
Lea. Copyright 1987.

Here is a
description of this
beautiful work by the
composer: Reflection and
Celebration for 8-part
Trombone Ensemble is a
musical homage to a man
who was revered for his
mentorship, musical
intellect and delightful
humor. The work opens
with a somber melodic
solo, capturing the noble
spirit of this great
mentor. Several
repetitive 5-note
ascending motives follow
which is a symbolic
reference to students
learning and
accomplishing under
Conklin's mentorship. The
bold fanfare style (in
measure 32) is presented
to capture the presence
and tall stature of
Conklin. Finally,
Conklin's down-to-earth
personality and his
infectious humor is
referenced (in measure
83). Even the fanfare
theme returns in a faster
tempo, thus highlighting
the frivolity,
lightheartedness, and
wisdom of this adored
music teacher. The music
is about 6 1/2 minutes in
length and is appropriate
for moderately advanced
performers.
Composed by Gustav Holst.
Arranged by Ronald
Barron. 20th Century
British. Score and parts.
Published by Cherry
Classics (CY.CC2762).
The
Evening-Watch was written
in 1925, when Holst lived
in Thaxted, England
having had to
temporarily leave his
teaching duties because
of overwork and illness.
This setting of Henry
Vaughan's
‘Dialogue
between the Body and the
Soul' was too
austere for
listeners of its day and
it remained out of print
for thirty years, until
1965. Its mood of calm
strength and passionate
resignation sounds as if
it belongs to the 1960's.
This
beautiful arrangement for
8-part trombone choir by
Ronald Baron seems
altogether appropriate
given the instrument's
vocal character, its
frequent use for music at
funerals and Holst's
other musical passion;
his short career as a
trombonist.
The
4 minute piece is
appropriate for
moderately advanced
performers.
Composed by Johann
Hentzschel. Arranged by
Nathan Siler.
Renaissance. Score and
parts. Published by
Cherry Classics
(CY.CC2875).
Canzon 1649 by
Johann Hentzschel for
8-part Trombone ensemble
is reminiscent of
Gabrieli and others of
the late Renaissance
period with antiphonal
writing for multiple
choirs. The music has
been expertly edited by
Nathan Siler and is
lively with notable
sections of imitation and
dance rhythms. This
3-minute work is
appropriate for
moderately advanced
performers and has no
endurance or range
challenges. The fine
live performance of this
work is led by the editor
himself, Trombonist,
Nathan Siler.
