Metastasio's libretto to
azione sacra La Passione
di Gesu Cristo (1730) is
a prototype for the
Italian Catholic oratorio
of the 18th century, in
which the Biblical text
is entirely transformed
into free verse.
Originally written for
Antonio Caldara, the text
has been set to music
many times. However, the
famous poet wrote in a
letter to the 26-year-old
composer that the
setting, in the style of
Italian Opera seria, was
the most expressive music
that has ever been
written for this poem.

Karl VI. Caldara's
festive setting of the
sequence for Whitsun,
Veni Sancte Spiritus,
which may have been
composed around 1725, is
now made available for

The catchy and compact
piece is suited for
concert performance and
is also excellently
suited for the liturgical
context of Whitsun:
during the Mass, for
example, as entrance or
exit music or as music
for the offertory.
Through similar scoring
requirements Caldara's
setting of the sequence
can also be used with
many compositions of the

Antonio
Lotti was employed at St.
Mark’s Basilica in
Venice for almost his
entire life. In 1717,
however, he was lured for
two years to Dresden by
the Saxon court as a
composer of operas. A
score of his Kyrie in G
minor and his Gloria in G
major, combined under the
title Missa Sapientia,
was later found amongst
the personal belongings
of Dresden court composer
Jan Dismas
Zelenka.
Zelenka
was not the only one
person impressed by the
Mass: at least two other
illustrious composers had
copies made, namely
Johann Sebastian Bach and
George Frideric Handel.
Indeed, the Mass is a
magnificent piece,
following the concertante
style of the time, with a
brilliant yet warm string
sound (2 violins and 2
violas). Score available

by, among others, J. S.

arrangement was the one
made around 1800 for the
Vienna Court Kapelle, in

I. X. Ritter von Seyfried
added woodwind
instruments and obbligato

addition the 2-part

Following
his death, Pergolesi's
last larger composition,
the Stabat Mater of 1736,
immediately became one of
the most popular sacred
works of the late
baroque-early classical
era. Numerous
publications made this
icon of Italian sacred
music known throughout
Europe. It was arranged
by, among others, J. S.
Bach (Tilge, Hochster,
meine Sunden, BWV 1083),
J. A. Hiller and Abbe
Vogler. The most popular
arrangement was the one
made around 1800 for the
Vienna Court Kapelle, in
which Antonio Salieri,
Franz Xaver Sussmayr and
I. X. Ritter von Seyfried
added woodwind
instruments and obbligato
trombones to the string
accompaniment. In
addition the 2-part
texture of the upper
voices in the original
was arranged for 4 parts
with obbligato soli. It
was only in this opulent,
sonorous version, which
Otto Nicolai and three
composer colleagues
offered to 19th century
Viennese music lovers.
The piece is of medium
difficulty. In the
Viennese version it is a
rarity that offers an
enrichment to the
repertoire for choirs
wishing to discover
something new.
