Thi
s six-movement chorale
cantata was first
performed on 26 December
1724. The text is based
on the Lutheran
translation of the early
Christian hymn A solis
ortus cardinem. The outer
movements frame two arias
for tenor and bass, and
two secco recitatives for
alto and soprano. The
first and sixth movements
are in old-fashioned
style, with four-part
vocal writing and colla
parte instruments. In the
aria (movement 2) the
tenor is accompanied by
an obbligato oboe
d'amore, and in the 4th
and most striking
movement, the three
string parts accompany
the bass. The demands on
the singers,
instrumentalists, and
chorus are typical of a
Bach cantata. Score

With a
duration of about 10
minutes, Schubert's
Magnificat D 486 in C
major is one of the more
concise settings of the
well-known Marian
canticles, originally for
the service of Vespers.
It was composed in late
summer 1815, and is
therefore probably one of
a series of church music
works Schubert wrote in
his youth for Lichtenthal
Parish Church. The work
requires a large-scale
orchestra with strings,
woodwind, and brass. The
four-part choir contrasts
with four soloists; this
quartet sings the
peaceful middle section
of the three-section
work. For the Carus
edition Schubert's own
autograph manuscript of
his Magnificat was
consulted again for the
first time since 1888.
Until 1989 this had been
thought to be lost. This
work is now available in
carus music, the choir
app! Score available

As
one of the three
canticles from the New
Testament, the Magnificat
- the Canticle of Mary -
has at all times held a
prominent position in
church music. Telemann's
setting of Luther's
German translation of the
text bears eloquent
witness both to the
composer's rich
imagination and to his
ability to mold a variety
of musical shapes into a
coherent formal Baroque
architecture. Four solo
movements with colorfully
contrasting
instrumentation are
juxtaposed with four
emphatically homogeneous
choral movements; all of
the latter are in 6/8
meter and in motet
setting with instruments
doubling colla parte.
Particularly the choral
movements are
characterized by lively
text portrayal and a
wealth of at times
dramatic imagery. A work
of exceptional magnetism
for both listeners and
choir singers! Score and
part available separately
