Prelude: Alnwick Town
was commissioned by the
Alnwick Playhouse Concert
Band (with Ray Thompson
as conductor) to
celebrate their first 25
years. It opens
majestically with
answering phrases between
various sections of the
band, leading to a faster
march-like section its
main theme echoes the
rhythms of the opening
material. A bridge
passage featuring
snippets for saxophones
and trumpets leads to a
new theme, more legato in
nature and repeated after
a change of key. The
bridge passage returns to
herald a restatement of
the main theme before the
opening material
reappears to close the
work with a
flourish.

Prelude: Alnwick Town
werd geschreven in

vraag-en-antwoordfrasen

secties, gevolgd door een
sneller, marsachtig
gedeelte waarvan het
hoofdthema de ritmes van
het openingsmateriaal
weerspiegelt. Een
bridgepassage met
fragmenten voor de
saxofoons en trompetten

modulatie. De
bridgepassage kondigt een

The Golden
Age is a programmatic
composition in four
movements. I
Overture For the
Netherlands, the
seventeenth century was a
period of great
flourishing in the fields
of economy, culture and
politics; thus it is
called the Golden Age.
Overseas trade boomed,
and the Dutch East India
Company (known as the VOC
by the Dutch) was founded
and expanded to become a
powerful -and, at the
time - modern enterprise.
II ¡Adiós
españoles!(Farewel
l, Spaniards!) In 1567,
the Spanish army invaded,
led by the Duke of Alva.
There was a fierce
resistance against the
Spanish tyranny; toward
the end of the sixteenth
century, the Dutch
proclaimed theRepublic.
However, the Spanish
continued the war. Only
with the Treaty of
Münster in 1648 did
the Dutch get their much
sought-after
independence. This was
also the end of the
Eighty Years’ War.
III Rembrandt’s
Night WatchThe field
of culture, particularly
literature, painting,
sculpture, architecture,
the art of printing, and
cartography developed
fast. It was in the
Golden Age that the
celebrated painter
Rembrandt van Rijn
created his famous Night
Watch. IV The
Admiral Overseas
trade entailed the
colonization of large
areas in Asia, from where
precious products that
yielded lots of money
were brought in.
Surrounding countries
were also involved in
such practices.
Colonizers poached on
each other’s
territories in the
literal and figurative
sense - in this context
the Anglo-Dutch Sea Wars
are legendary. The fourth
movement starts with the
English patriotic song
Rule Britannia, after
which the Dutch Admiral
Michiel de Ruyter makes
the English change their
tune; one can even hear
the roaring of cannons.
When the smoke of battle
has cleared, a small
fragment of a Dutch song
about Michiel de Ruyter
appears, followed by a
fitting closing.

Valon is a
one-part composition. The
surprising opening
measures describe the
sudden entrance into
another world. After
these initial measures,
we hear a choral-like
melody, which is repeated
three times in different
instrumentations with
increasing intensity.
This represents the
procession of the ghosts
dwelling in the
underworld of Avalon,
headed by the mighty
magician Merlin.The
exalted sound is then
suddenly interrupted by a
fast movement, in which
ostinato figures
alternate with bi-tonal
motives. This represents
the attempt of some evil
characters to invade
Avalon. Mordred is the
leader of this horde and
together they disturb the
peace and quiet in the
otherwisecalm Avalon. The
flourish of trumpets
heralds the entrance of
the Knights of the Round
Table who drive away the
intruders and return to
their castle, Tintagel,
in a triumphal
procession. Upon their
return, the next problem
presents itself. An
inexplicable disease
plagues the resting
ghosts.The Knights and
the Council of the Wise
are convened to find out
the cause of this
problem. Musically this
can be heard in the
repetition of the initial
themes. The Knights and
the Council of the Wise
determine that the
presence of mortals is
the reason that the
resting ghosts are
suffering. There is
simply no room for mortal
souls in Avalon. After a
powerful statement by
King Arthur, we hear a
glissando referring to
the very first measures,
and… we are back in
the normal world. The
journey through the
underworld has come to an
end and a dream is over.

This three
movement work, modeled on
his earlier work
Rhapsody for
Brass, develops from
and mirrors the earlier
work, but with more
modern tonal outlines and
original melodic
material. The first
movement opens with
several fanfare-like
figures, which recur at
various times in
different instrumental
combinations. With
development, this music
takes on a carnival-like
atmosphere before
concluding with an upward
flourish. The second
movement commences
quietly with a slower
theme shared by several
solo instruments and
develops into an extended
study on The Water is
Wide, a folk song
which seems to have its
beginnings in the United
Kingdom as O Waley,
Waley. Thethird
movement reverts to the
rhapsodic format with a
lively theme marked
‘in a playful
manner’. This
substantial work is a gem
in the concert band
repertoire.
Dit
werk is opgedragen aan
wijlen Sir Dean Goffin en
in grote lijnen gevormd
naar de structuur van
diens Rhapsody in
Brass. Het eerste
deel opent met
fanfareachtige motieven,
die terugkeren in
verschillende
instrumentgroepen.Deel
twee begint met een
langzaam thema dat in
diverse solo-instrumenten
naar voren komt. De
muziek ontwikkelt zich
hier tot een etude over
het Amerikaanse lied
The Water is Wide.
In het levendige derde
deel gebruikte
Bulla,refererend aan
Goffin’s afkomst,
het Maori-lied Shout
the Sound. Na een
majestueuze herhaling van
de opening van het deel
wordt het werk afgesloten
met een presentatie van
technisch
kunnen.
In drei
unterschiedlichen
Sätzen entwickelt
dieses Werk die
Rhapsody in Brass
von Sir Dean Goffin
weiter, dem die
Symphonette auch
gewidmet wurde. Fanfare
ähnliche Figuren
eröffnen den ersten
Satz, der dann eine
ausgelassene Stimmung
entfaltet. Im zweiten
Satz wird ein langsameres
Thema von verschiedenen
Soloinstrumenten
präsentiert. Er
entwickelt sich zu einer
Studie über ein altes
englisches Volkslied. Im
letzten, rhapsodischen
Satz folgte Bulla Goffins
Wurzeln, indem er ein
Lied der Maori aus
Neuseeland verarbeitete.

Richard's
exciting overture
captures feelings of
adventure and daring as
we look towards a new
frontier and flourishing
future. The percussion
section is featured at
the start, as layers of
patterns build up to a
vibrant full band
statement of the main
theme. The lyric middle
section features short
solos for clarinet and
trumpet accompanied by
lush background harmonies
from the ensemble. The
fast pace returns
introduced by a playful
baritone sax solo
followed by a full band
recap of the opening
theme and a rousing
finish.

The
second half of the 18th
century, for the people
of East Central Europe,
was the time of the
awakening of national
consciousness. The
leading force in the
Hungarian enlightenment,
the lesser nobility, also
regarded as important the
national character of the
country's culture. A
valuable kind of national
music was the Hungarian
dance music that
flourished in the 18th
century. The greater part
of the repertoire
naturally perpetuates the
'Hungarian-style' pieces
from the previous
centuries (appearing in
foreign collections too
described as hungaricus,
ungaresca, saltus
hungaricus or Ungarischer
Tanz), but beside these
we can encounter
contemporary European
dances and entertaining
instrumental pieces in
almost every style. The
majority of the sources
are collections compiled
by non-professional
musicians and intendedfor
private music-making. In
this work the composer
uses melodies from the
18th-century Linus dance
collection, in trioform,
with harmonies and bass
appropriate to that
period. The musical
fabric is rich in
counterparts, the sound
is mademore colourful
with many kinds of
percussion instruments.
The register and rhythmic
simplicity of the parts
make thepieces easily
playable even by music
school
pupils.

Nordanvind
is a tour de force
symphonic rhapsody that
is built on three
Scandinavian folk songs.
Composer Carl Strommen
has composed these
Viking-influenced
melodies into a concert
setting that brings out
all of the history of the
Scandinavian people. The
piece is at times bold
and aggressive, at other
times beautiful. Carl
employs all of the
instrumental colors of
the concert band to
create a new work for
more advanced
ensembles. Modern
Scandinavians are
descendants of the
Vikings, an adventuresome
people who were known for
their love of the sea,
their naval prowess, and
as fierce fighters . The
Scandinavian Vikings were
warriors from Denmark,
Norway, and Sweden who
traded, raided and
settled in various parts
of Europe, Russia, the
North Atlantic islands,
and the northeastern
coast of North America
.Starting around 1850,
over one million Swedes
left their homeland for
the United States in
search of religious
freedom and open farm
land . Augustana College
was founded in 1860 by
graduates of Swedish
universities and is
located on the
Mississippi River in Rock
Island, Illinois . Home
of the
“Vikings,â€
Augustana College is the
oldest Swedish- American
institution of higher
learning in the United
States . This powerful
and lively piece takes
inspiration from Swedish
history and from Swedish
folk songs and hymns
.Havsdrake (Dragon of the
Sea)The Nordanvind or
“North Windâ€
blows a cold wind during
a journey of a group of
courageous Viking rowers
. The
“Dragon-shipâ€
or long ships designed
for raiding and war was a
sophisticated, fast ship
able to navigate in very
shallow water . To
musically portray these
magnificent seafaring
vessels, the director is
encouraged to use an
Ocean Drum (or a rain
stick) during the
introduction . Wind
players may consider
blowing air through their
instruments to suggest
the North wind . Adding
men’s voices to
accompany the haunting
low brass and percussive
“rowerâ€
sounds can be helpful in
creating the dark and
ominous portrayal of
Viking adventurers
.Slangpolska efter Byss -
KalleIn Sweden, a
“polska†is a
partner dance where the
dancers spin each other
(släng in Swedish
“to sling or
tossâ€) .
Slangpolska efter Byss -
Kalle is attributed to
Byss-Kalle, who was a
notable Swedish folk
musician, specifically a
nyckelharpa player .
Slangpolska efter Byss -
Kalle is a traditional
“polskaâ€
dance song most often
played on the Nyckelharpa
or keyed fiddle and is
commonly heard in pubs
and at festive events
throughout Sweden .
Approximately 10,000
nyckelharpa players live
in Sweden today, and the
Swedish and the American
Nyckelharpa Associations
are dedicated to this
Swedish National
instrument . The director
is encouraged to share
video and audio examples
of the nyckelharpa
playing the original
Slangpolska efter Byss -
Kalle .Tryggare Kan Ingen
Vara (Children of the
Heavenly Father)Tryggare
Kan Ingen Vara Is a
traditional Swedish
melody, possibly of
German roots, and was
believed to be arranged
as a hymn by the Swedish
hymn writer, Karolina
Wilhelmina Sandell-Berg
(1832–1903) . As a
daughter of a Swedish
Lutheran minister, she
began writing poems as a
teenager and is said to
have written over 1,700
different texts . There
are two different
accounts as to the
inspiration for this hymn
. The first story is that
Lina (as she was called)
wrote the hymn to honor
her father and to say
thank you to him for
raising her and
protecting her . A second
belief is of her
witnessing the tragic
death of her father . She
and her father were on a
boat, when a wave threw
her father overboard . It
was said that the
profound effect of
watching her father drown
is what caused Lina to
write the text to this
hymn . Although this is a
treasured song to people
of Swedish descent
everywhere, it speaks to
all people about a father
tending and nourishing
his children, and
protecting them from evil

The
twofold title of this
concert work is directly
connected with the band
who commissioned it. The
â??Harmonie Municipale
Grevenmacherâ?? from the
town of the same name, by
the river Moselle in the
Grand Duchy of Luxembourg
was founded in the
year1834. The name
Machera is derived from
the word machara, which
in turn originated from
maceries (old wall).
Later, Machera evolved
into Machern,
Grafenmachern, and
finally Grevenmacher.In
2009, this music society
the third oldest still in
existence in the country
celebrated its 175th
anniversary. And after
all these years the
society still flourishes!
The dynamic committee,
led by Georges May, fully
supports and inspires
themusical leader of the
band, Claude Weiland, as
well as his 60-strong
ensemble. This
well-functioning team
took the initiative to
ask Jan Van der Roost to
write an anniversary
composition, inspired, on
the one hand, by the
rural character
ofGrevenmacher and its
surroundings (where the
famous Moselle wine
growing dominates the
countryside), and on the
other hand, by the
dynamics, creativity and
joie de vivre the band
exudes. All of this
resulted in a twofold
work with alternating
peaceand excitement,
virtuous and melodic
features, orchestral
splendour and soberly
orchestrated passages.
The première, on 10
January 2010, was
conducted by the composer
himself at a successful
gala concert which
brought a fine year full
of musicalfestivities to
a close. The â??Harmonie
Municipale
Grevenmacherâ?? faces
the future with
confidence, and will now
prepare for its next
milestone: the 200th
anniversary!
1834
- Machara Impressions was
a commission for the
175th anniversary of the
band Harmonie Municipale
Grevenmacher from the
town of Grevenmacher -
formerly Machara - in
Luxemburg. It is a work
of many contrasts with
alternating peace and
excitement, virtuous and
melodic features,
orchestral splendour and
soberly orchestrated
passages - reflecting the
peaceful and turbulent
history of the band.

Questo brano
sottolinea ed elogia il
dinamismo della Banda

stesso tempo la storia di
questa cittadina, situata

si alternano
armoniosamente a passaggi
più vivaci, elementi
virtuosi si mischiano a
tratti melodici, mentre
sul tutto aleggia uno
splendore e una sobriet
