An authoritative Urtext
edition of Three Fantasy
Pieces Op.111 by Robert
Schumann, edited by Ernst
Herttrich with fingering
by Walther Lampe.
Following Schumanns move
to the Rhine, where he
had become the musical
director of the
Dusseldorf Music Society,
times became hard for
him. Despite several
initial successes, he
increasingly encountered
resistance from
notabilities, musicians
and the public. He thus
worked all the more
intensively at home on
his new works. R. has
composed three piano
pieces of a very serious,
passionate character,
which greatly please me,
Clara Schumann wrote in
her diary in September
1851. This edition of the
Fanasy Pieces, which
display a certain
affinity with the
Romances Op.28, has been
thoroughly revised and an
informative preface has
been added.

Frederic
Chopin's Piano Concertos
in e minor op. 11 and f
minor op. 21 were written
when the composer had
just barely entered his
twenties. Since he needed
effective, virtuoso works
for his major concert
appearances with
orchestral accompaniment,
he decided to simply
write them himself.
Although it is clear that
the piano part always
holds center stage in
these pieces, Chopin
never degrades the
orchestra by turning it
into a stereotypical
cue-giver. This is
confirmed by the
imaginatively
orchestrated tutti
transition in the first
movement, the lengthy
string tremolo in the
middle movement and the
col legno passage in the
finale.The first
performance of the
f-minor concerto took
place in Warsaw on 17
March 1830. The first
edition of the score was
published in 1879 by
Breitkopf & Hartel in
Leipzig. The present
edition for two pianos by
Ignaz Friedmann was first
issued in 1913 in the
framework of the
12-volume Chopin edition
for which the Polish
pianist undertook a
careful evaluation of the
sources.

Johanna
Senfter studied music at
the Conservatoire in
Frankfurt and then in
1908/9 with Max Reger at
the Leipzig
Conservatoire. Her late
Romantic music draws
inspiration from the
polyphonic structure of
Reger and Bach, as well
as from the complex use
of sounds and motifs in
the music of J. Brahms,
which did not leave her
in an easy position in
the context of twentieth
Century modernism.
Growing interest in the
work of female composers
has also led to a
rediscovery of J. Senfter
in recent years. Her
extensive work includes
piano music, orchestral
works and chamber music,
including the Piece for
flute, clarinet (in A),
two bassoons and four
horns, first performed in
Karlsruhe in 1934.

by Camille Saint-Saens.

Carus-Verlag
is now publishing this
early work by Camille
Saint-Saens in a critical
new edition. Among the
sacred works by
Saint-Saens there are
just two settings of the
mass: the Messe de
Requiem op. 54 from his
middle period (1878), and
the Mass op. 4 dating
from 1856. This was first
performed on 21 April
1857. Camille Saint-Saens
was a devoted follower of
historicism as part of
the reform movement in
French church music. This
is more evident in the
mass published here than
anywhere else. The model
for this work is the
unison Messe Royale by
Henry DuMont (1610-1683).
Saint-Saens combined its
Gregorian style in a
convincing manner with
contemporary elements of
Romantic composition, an
expressive chromaticism,
which determines the
harmonic progression.
Alongside the orchestral
forces, the Grand Orgue
plays an important role.
Used as a solo
instrument, it is an
equal partner in the
composition. Score and
