Needham's
original intent with
Chamber Symphony was to
encapsulate the 2008
presidential election,
from the Democratic
primaries to the historic
general election campaign
and win of Barack Obama.
But, says Needham, In the
midst of the general
election circus, I
decided to broaden my
inspiration and have the
work's overall goal focus
on the larger ideas of
hope and transformation.
Chamber Symphony was
commissioned by the
American Composers
Orchestra with generous
support of Paul
Underwood. Additional
support was from the
National Endowment for
the Arts. I originally
envisioned a work
inspired by the political
landscape of the 2008
presidential election,
focusing primarily on the
hard-fought Democratic
Primary race. I was
fascinated by the
historic and hopeful
spirit that both the
Barack Obama and Hillary
Clinton campaigns
embodied. Sometime later,
in the midst of the
general election circus,
I decided to broaden my
inspiration and have the
work’s overall
goal focus on the larger
ideas of hope and
transformation. Chamber
Symphony is constructed
in three movements
(played without pause):
I. Hammering Out, II.
Open-ended Echoes, and
III. Radiant Nation. The
titles suggest a general
atmosphere that each
movement attempts to
express. The outer
movements, both quick in
tempo, act as the
antithesis of each other
in terms of mood.
“Hammering
Out†employs an
aggressive, relentless,
pounding beat that
frequently shifts, often
emphasized with metallic
sounds. “Radiant
Nation†is much
lighter and more
optimistic in tone, and
uses an up-beat groove
throughout the movement.
The middle movement,
“Open-ended
Echoes,†is the
proverbial calm after the
storm. Unlike the outer
movements,
“Open-ended
Echoes†is almost
void of any strong sense
of pulse. The movement
attempts to create a
peaceful, contemplative
mood that transforms the
volatile nature of the
first movement tothe
radiant spirit of the
last. Chamber Symphony
was commissioned by the
American Composers
Orchestra for its
Orchestra Underground
Series with the generous
support of Paul
Underwood. Additional
support for the
ACO’s Emerging
Composers Program comes
from the National
Endowment for the
Arts.— November 5,
2008.

Mother
Teresa liked to surprise
people she met by giving
them a small card printed
with five concise
sentences instead of a
calling card. The brief
text on the card
beginning with the line
“The fruit of
silence is prayerâ€
was a summary of her
vision of devout,
peace-promoting
philanthropy in poetical
form. In 2013, I created
a musical setting of
Mother Teresa's
“Prayer of
Peace†which was
commissioned by the
Schleswig-Holstein Music
Festival for mixed choir
a cappella (C 55851) in
the form of a densely
woven elegiac sound
stream. Slightly later, I
extended the work to
produce a version with
piano (C 56345) which in
turn became the basis for
a setting scored for
mixed choir with string
orchestra which was first
performed in Riga in
October 2014. In 2015,
the versions for piano
quintet (ED 22450) and
string quartet (ED 22723)
also permitted my musical
setting of Mother
Teresa's words to be
performed without choir
in two traditional genres
of chamber music. The
current published version
for mixed choir and organ
extends the work series
through a further
conventional scoring.

From
the composer:
How
did it all begin? And
what happened
next?
I found
myself pondering these
questions in an art
gallery in Bremen, in a
James Turrell
installation that carved
through three storeys of
the gallery.
Looking down from the top
floor through great
circles of
colour-changing light to
the distant sparkling
points in a dark ellipse
on the ground floor, I
felt that I was looking
back in time to the
origins of the universe
– and I started to
hear children’s
voices in my mind’s
ear, accompanied by
twinkling metal
percussion.
Haydn&rs
quo;s Creation&n
bsp;immediately
comes to mind as a
precedent, but that is a
setting and elaboration
of the Book of
Genesis. I thought
we should tell the modern
version of our story, and
be as scientifically
accurate as
possible.

When
some time ago I looked at
works by the painter Egon
Schiele whom I admire
very much, I thought
which paintings would
have been painted by this
artist, had he not died
much too early. I
envisioned the works he
had never painted. Isn't
it impressive with what
modest means he achieves
maximum emotional effect?
It was this thought, too,
that accompanied me
during my work on this
piece - though painting
techniques cannot be
directly reflected in the
music, of course. Tatjana

Earth
and Sky was commissioned
by the BBC for the Proms
2000 season. In keeping
with the millennial
theme, a work presenting
a vision of the future
was requested. Trying to
be helpful, the BBC
provided me with the
predictions of various
pundits, but their ideas
seemed dizzyingly
contradictory. Then the
simple thought struck me
that however varied and
complex the answers, the
big questions will always
remain the same. We may
now have a map of the
human genome, but how to
use the map? How shall I
know where I should go?
How may I see the I
that's me? As a
musician I am hopeful
that, no matter how the
world develops, future
generations will still
come together to dance
and sing and play. The
mysterious power of music
to bind us socially and
inspire us individually
seems to be built into
our genes. So, a song of
questions; a song about
music---these were the
ideas which I took to
Vikram Seth, who had
generously agreed to
write the words for me.
The resulting poem
provided lots of
inspiration. It is
entirely monosyllabic,
enabling considerable
variety of rhythmic
treatment. I love its
permutations and its
imagery of paradox and
inversion and I have
amused myself by playing
similar games with the
musical material. But
there is seriousness as
well as fun---the text's
juxtaposition of the
certainty of death with
the search for purpose in
life achieves great
poignancy when sung by
young voices. (Alec
Roth)

Liszts Transcendental
Studies (Etudes
d'execution
transcendante) of 1852
are without doubt among
the triumphs of virtuoso
piano music, and their
visionary language and
poetic expression make
them a milestone of the
romantic age. This set of
twelve etudes represents
the results of the
composers own revision of
a collection already
published in 1827 and
1839. Accordingly, the
principal source for this
edition was a printed
copy of the earlier
version with myriad
changes in the composers
hand. Each of these
pieces, including the
famous Harmonies du soir
and Mazeppa, bears its
own title and has entered
the concert repertoire
less as an etude than as
a tone-poem with its own
distinctive flavour.
