Frigyes
Hidas.
Frigyes
Hidas (1928-2007) was the
most prolific Hungarian
composer for wind
ensembles, and his works
are the most often
performed. His worldwide
popularity is based on
works such as Balettzene
(Ballet music), Vidam
zene (Cheerful music), El
nem tancolt balett
(Undanced ballet),
Requiem and Save the Sea.
His folk song suites,
which are enormously
popular in his homeland,
are fine examples of
Hidas' mature style in
the genre of folk song
arrangements. The first
suite works up nine folk
songs of differing
character and atmosphere,
while the second, with
its recurrent structure,
makes use of five
melodies, creating a
modern harmonic
environment around them
and thereby highlighting
even more the beauty of
the melodies. To perform
these works effectively,
ample technique is
required, as well as an
ability to shape the
music freely. Highly
recommended for ensembles
with an interest in
Hungarian wind music and
folklore.
Composed by J. Curnow.

The melodies in

nature of the coastal
region is evident in many
of the melodies.
Gustav Holst did
not have much success in
getting his early
compositions published.
In 1905, he began a
career as a gifted
teacher when he was
appointed Director of
Music at St. Paul's Girls
School in Hammersmith. It
was also a time when he
developed the friendship
of Ralph Vaughan Williams
and the two developed an
interest in English folk
music. This became a
turning point in Holst's
style as he left behind
the heaviness of the
Wagnerian style for the
simplicity of folk
melodies. Vaughan
Williams wrote 'we were
dazzled, we wanted to
preach a new gospel, we
wanted to rhapsodise on
these tunes just as Liszt
and Grieg had done on
theirs - we simply were
fascinated by the tunes.'
Enthusiastic archivist
Cecil Sharp, of the Folk
Song Society, encouraged
Holst to write 'Two
Selections of Folk Songs'
based on material Sharp
had collected in the West
of England. Songs of the
West was the first of the
pair noted as Opus 22 was
written in 1906; A
Somerset Rhapsody was
completed the following
year. The melodies in
Songs of the West differ
in styles, keys, and
tempos. The nautical
nature of the coastal
region is evident in many
of the melodies.
Originally written for
orchestra, noted composer
James Curnow was
commissioned in 1986 to
arrange the work for
concert band.

Chen
Yi’s most
performed and most
beloved choral music is a
series of 10 Chinese folk
songs adapted for
S.A.T.B. Chorus
(published in 3 volumes:
312-41731, 312-41732,
312-41733). This special
version is a setting of
the familiar collection,
adapted for
children’s chorus
and
strings. Remembering
when I studied
composition in the
Central Conservatory of
Music in Beijing, I
learned to sing hundreds
of Chinese folk songs
collected from more than
twenty provinces and
fifty ethnic groups, and
went to countryside to
collect original folk
music every year. I
got to know that the folk
songs are a mirror of
people’s daily
lives, their thoughts and
sentiments, local customs
and manners. They are
sung in regional dialects
and use the idioms of
everyday speech with
their particular
intonations, accents and
cadences. This
correlation between
speech and music
distinguishes folk songs
of one region from
another. I learned
all songs by heart and
sang them back in the
exams every week.Â
They melted in my blood
and became my natural
music language. The
more I walk into the
music life,the more I
treasure the rich culture
I have learned from my
homeland. When I
became the
Composer-in-Residence of
Chanticleer and was
invited to write the
first work for its
concert program, as well
as another version for
its
Singing-In-The-Schools
program, I decided to
introduce A Set of
Chinese Folk Songs to my
American audiences, and
add a new flavor to
Chanticleer’srich
repertoire. The work
includes ten folk songs,
taken from eight
provinces (Anhui,
Shaanxi, Yunnan, Shanxi,
Taiwan, Sinkiang, Jiangsu
and Guizhou) and five
ethnic groups (Han,
Hasake, Uighur, Miao and
Yi). I arranged them
for choirs (men’s
or children’s
chorus) with various
combinations in voices,
to be sung mostly in
Chinese, some in
English.  From the
mysterious mountain songs
originally sung in the
open air with high and
long notes that can carry
over great distances, the
sweet and delicate
melodies of young love
compared with nature, the
humorous antiphony by
little children, and the
lively dancing tune by
villagers, you may get an
idea of various music
styles in Chinese folk
songs according to
geographic, ethnic and
linguistic differences,
and appreciate the beauty
of the Chinese folk
music. The pure choir
sound and the
sophisticated singing by
Chanticleer, in terms of
pitches, language and
musical expressions,
really attract and
inspire me to create some
more new works in the
years to come. In
thisedition of A Set of
Chinese Folk Songs for
standard SATB mixed choir
(with piano rehearsal
score), I divided these
ten songs into three
volumes. They are
Fengyang Song, The
Flowing Stream, Guessing,
Thinking of My Darling,
Mayila, Jasmine Flower,
Riding on a Mule,
Awariguli, Diu Diu Deng,
andMountain Song and
Dancing Tune.—Chen

veshur me të bardha
(Dressed in White -
Kosova) is the most
popular wedding song
which is sung not only in
Kosova, but in every
Albanian wedding. As in
most folk songs, these
tunes are remarkably
short. The melodies
themselves have not been
altered, but have been
extended, enriched in
texture, and presented in
different ways. The
melodic lines serve as a
point of departure for
the proliferation of a
distinct harmonic
vocabulary for each song.
Within the overall folk
idiom of the piece, each
song has its own flavour
and character.

A truly
masterful fantasy on an
English folk song, this
piece shows the
exceptional musical
development found in many
of the greatest classical
symphonies. The fantasy
is roughly in the style
of the classical rondo
(ABACA) and features fine
counterpoint and engaging
melodies. This piece can
be played in an
orchestral and quartet
setting and is both
challenging and fun to
play. My Fantasy
on The Wee Cooper of Fife
was one of four such
fantasies I wrote for my
daughter April when she
was studying the violin,
and I had hopes that when
she reached the age of
wisdom and proficiency
she would play them with
her friends. Life being
what is it, she
eventually gave up the
violin and chose a
completely different
career for herself-though
we are still the best of
friends! I found the song
in a collection of folk
songs for children where
it is called Rissoldy
Rossoldy. Except for
a few notes, the song was
almost identical to the
English folksong The
Wee Cooper of Fife,
which begins: There was a
Wee Cooper named Fife /
nickity nackety roo noo
roo / He took him to wed
a gentle wife / nickity
nackety roo noo roo / She
would na card she would
na spin / for fear 't
would harm her gentle
skin.... The tune is
rollicking and words are
amusing, and yes,
eventually they worked
out their problems!
The Fantasy is
roughly in the style of
the classical rondo,
which is ABACA coda, such
as one finds in the last
movements of some of
Haydn's later symphonies.
This composition may be
performed by a string
orchestra or solo string
quartet. - Douglas

na spin / for fear 't
would harm her gentle
skin.... The tune is
rollicking and words are
amusing, and yes,
eventually they worked
out their problems! The
Fantasy is roughly in the
style of the classical
rondo, which is ABACA
coda, such as one finds
in the last movements of
some of Haydn's later
symphonies. This
composition may be
performed by a string
orchestra or solo string
quartet. - Douglas
Townsend. My Fantas
y on The Wee Cooper of
Fife was one of four
such fantasies I wrote
for my daughter April
when she was studying the
violin, and I had hopes
that when she reached the
age of wisdom and
proficiency she would
play them with her
friends. Life being what
is it, she eventually
gave up the violin and
chose a completely
different career for
herself-though we are
still the best of
friends!I found the song
in a collection of folk
songs for children where
it is called Rissoldy
Rossoldy. Except for a
few notes, the song was
almost identical to the
English folksong The
Wee Cooper of Fife, which
begins:There was a Wee
Cooper named Fife /
nickity nackety roo noo
roo / He took him to wed
a gentle wife / nickity
nackety roo noo roo / She
would na card she would
na spin / for fear 't
would harm her gentle
skin....The tune is
rollicking and words are
amusing, and yes,
eventually they worked
out their problems!The
Fantasy is roughly in the
style of the classical
rondo, which is ABACA
coda, such as one finds
in the last movements of
