James Miley
brings us an original,
fresh and fun-to-play
composition titled Swing
State. With bop-ish lines
over a swing feel (with a
funky back-beat), this
chart brings new life to
an eager rhythm section
and interesting,
interactive rhythmic
figures to the ensemble.
You choose the soloists
from tenor saxophone,
trumpet and/or trombone.
There is also some solo
space for your drummer.
Miley is a wonderful
composer, and this chart
is a great addition to
our growing library of
contemporary composers.

Every
band from Tommy Dorsey to
the Tonight Show Band to
Ted Heath seemed to have
a version of this great
Sy Oliver tune. Bob
Curnow compiled some of
those versions into one
great, new arrangement.
It features, of course,
the trumpet section (Bob
wrote it for an optional
5-player section) and two
improvised trumpet solos.
The swing band feel is
very much a part of this
chart which culminates in
an ending that will knock
your socks off. Your
audiences will LOVE this
one. 5-5-4-4.

As
recorded by the Stan
Kenton Orchestra on
Adventures In Standards
CD, this is a wonderful,
swinging chart on a great
tune. As usual, Lennie
does a great job
arranging it, with
terrific section work and
limited ranges for the
brass (written high D for
1st Tpt). There is a
nice, lengthy solo for
Baritone Sax. 5-5-5-3
(can be played with 8
brass).

This chart was
originally written for
Charlie Parker to perform
with the Stan Kenton
Orchestra. Eventually it
was recorded by Lee
Konitz. The ensemble
writing is very playable
with no range concerns in
the brass. If you have a
great alto saxophone
player (the solo is
mostly chord symbols),
this is an easy tune to
put together with your
band and will be a
spectacular addition to
any concert program.

This
is, unquestionably, one
of the most beautiful
ballads ever written. And
this arrangement really
takes advantage of the
richness of the Kenton
Sound. This chart
captures that wonderful
feeling of warmth and
power without high
trumpet parts or extra
demanding dynamics. A
great choice for
festivals.
