Jacob de Haan was commissioned to compose this concert piece by the St. Peters Wind Symphony from Brisbane, Australia. Ross Roy is the monumental late 19th century villa where St. Peters Lutheran College was founded in 1945. The villa has always remained the school symbol. In this composition, Jacob de Haan sees the Ross Roy as a metaphor for the years spent at school (a monument in time), where one's personality is formed. So, the opening theme the artist calls the Ross Roy theme initially has monumental characteristics.The rhythmic motion, which strides along in the lower register and percussion at the beginning of the next section is typical of Tempo di Marcia. Thismovement, accompanied by repetitions of sound, is a metaphor for the structure and discipline in school. This is the introduction to a march theme, symbolic of passing through the classes up to the final examinations.Then, the Ross Roy theme is dealt with again, now in a playful, humorous variation. As if the composer is saying there should also be time for a smile in school. The same theme can be heard in major key and a slower tempo in the following section, expressing pride and self-confidence. This is also the introduction to the expressive middle section that represents love, friendship and understanding.We then return to the march theme in a slightly altered construction. The oriental sounds, constituting the modulation to the final theme, are symbols of the diversity of cultures in the school. The characteristic final theme first sounds solemn, but turns into a festive apotheosis. It is no coincidence that the final cadence is reminiscent of the close to a traditional overture, for the school years can be considered the overture to the rest of one's life. The premiere of Ross Roy was conducted by Jacob de Haan in Brisbane, on August 22, 1997.

L’œuvre tient son nom de l’imposante villa éponyme située Brisbane en Australie et qui abrite en ses murs le Collège Saint Pierre, une institution luthérienne fondée en 1945. C’est pour l’Orchestre d’Harmonie de cet établissement que Jacob de Haan composa cette œuvre riche en métaphores. « J’ai tenté de décrire les valeurs de cette école. Ainsi, le thème initial se développe-t-il sur un motif rythmique imposant qui alterne entre les instruments graves et la batterie. Ce motif symbolise l’autorité et le cadre structuré de l’école. On retrouve ce thème plusieurs reprises et notamment sousune forme humoristique et espiègle : nous découvrons les bons côtés de l’école, la joie des élèves, les sentiments de fierté, d’amour et d’amitié. Autre élément thématique, une marche qui symbolise la progression des élèves dans leur cursus pour arriver leurs examens de fin d'étude. » En guise de conclusion, Jacob de Haan nous offre un thème grandiose qui s’élargit en apothéose.

Centenary 2019 is a three-movement suite based on a local folksong and was commissioned by Chr. Fanfare De Lofstem, from the Dutch province of Friesland, on the occasion of its 100th anniversary in 2019. ‘Awakening Village’, the first movement, musically describes the waking up and coming to life of the village. ‘Bintje Monument’ was inspired by a famous sculpture that was placed to honour headmaster Kornelis Lieuwes de Vries (1854-1929) who developed the well-known potato variety called ‘bintje’. The finale, ‘Journey into the Unknown’ refers to the band’s memorable 2011 concert trip to the United States of America, in which the composer combines elements of thefolksong and fragments from ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’. The piece consists of a wide range of playful and melodic sequences as well as some galvanizing rhythmical passages.

Het driedelige werk Centenary 2019 werd gecomponeerd in opdracht van Chr. Fanfare De Lofstem uit het Friese Sumar ter gelegenheid van het honderdjarig jubileum van de vereniging in 2019. Het is gebaseerd op een plaatselijk volksliedje. In het eerste deel, ‘Awakening Village’, wordt verklankt hoe het dorp ontwaakt en tot leven komt. Deel twee, ‘Bintje Monument’, is ge nspireerd op een sculptuur ter nagedachtenis van hoofdonderwijzer Kornelis Lieuwes de Vries (1854-1929), die het bekende aardappelras bintje ontwikkelde. De finale, ‘Journey into the Unknown’ verwijst naar een concertreis die de muziekvereniging in 2011 naar de VS maakte. De componist laat elementen uit hetleidmotief en flarden van ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ in het slotdeel van dit werk samenkomen. From Ancient Times is een mijlpaal in het oeuvre van Jan Van der Roost. Doorgaans vinden zijn werken hun oorsprong veelal in de Vlaamse vocaalpolyfonie uit de renaissancetijd. Maar met gregoriaans gezang en middeleeuwse dansen grijpthij nu terug naar nog eerdere tijden. De basis voor dit grootse werk mag dan in ‘ancient times’ liggen, de toonspraak is dat zeer zeker niet..!

Mais elle deviendra un grand succès peu après, lorsque Frank et Nancy Sinatra la chantent en duo. Plus récemment, Somethin’ Stupid s’est offert une nouvelle jeunesse. Klezmer music originated in the ‘shtetl’ (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as ‘klezmorim’, had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages. Since the 16th century, lyrics had been added to klezmer music, due to the ‘badkhn’ (the master of ceremony at weddings), to the ‘Purimshpil’ (the play of Esther at Purim) and to traditions of the Yiddish theatre, but the term gradually became synonymous with instrumental music, particularly featuring the violin and clarinet. In recent years it has again become very popular and in A Klezmer Karnival Philip Sparke has used three contrasting traditionaltunes to form a suite that will bring a true karnival atmosphere to any concert.

De wortels van de klezmerstijl liggen in wereldlijke melodieën, populaire dansen, het joodse ‘hazanut’ (cantorijmuziek) en de ‘nigunim’, de melodieën die worden gereciteerd door de ‘hasidim’ (orthodoxe joden). De term werd in de loopder tijden synoniem aan instrumentale muziek, waarin met name de viool en klarinet de hoofdrol spelen. Voor A Klezmer Karnival zijn drie traditionele melodieën gebruikt: Choson kale mazel tov, een bruiloftsdans,Freylekh , een joodse kringdans, en Sherele, een Duitse herdersdans.

Phili p Sparke verarbeitete in seinem Werk drei unterschiedliche traditionelle Klezmermelodien: einen Hochzeitstanz mit Glückwünschen für Braut und Bräutigam, einen Rundtanz und einen so genannten Scherentanz. Daraus entstand A Klezmer Karnival, das die dem Klezmer eigene Mischung aus Fröhlichkeit und Melancholie ausgezeichnet wiedergibt. Ein ebenso abwechslungsreiches wie stimmungsvolles Konzertwerk, mit dem Ihr Blasorchester überzeugen wird!

Klezmer music originated in the ‘shtetl’ (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as ‘klezmorim’, had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages. Since the 16th century, lyrics had been added to klezmer music, due to the ‘badkhn’ (the master of ceremony at weddings), to the ‘Purimshpil’ (the play of Esther at Purim) and to traditions of the Yiddish theatre, but the term gradually became synonymous with instrumental music, particularly featuring the violin and clarinet. In recent years it has again become very popular and in A Klezmer Karnival Philip Sparke has used three contrasting traditionaltunes to form a suite that will bring a true karnival atmosphere to any concert.

De wortels van de klezmerstijl liggen in wereldlijke melodieën, populaire dansen, het joodse ‘hazanut’ (cantorijmuziek) en de ‘nigunim’, de melodieën die worden gereciteerd door de ‘hasidim’ (orthodoxe joden). De term werd in de loopder tijden synoniem aan instrumentale muziek, waarin met name de viool en klarinet de hoofdrol spelen. Voor A Klezmer Karnival zijn drie traditionele melodieën gebruikt: Choson kale mazel tov, een bruiloftsdans,Freylekh , een joodse kringdans, en Sherele, een Duitse herdersdans.

Phili p Sparke verarbeitete in seinem Werk drei unterschiedliche traditionelle Klezmermelodien: einen Hochzeitstanz mit Glückwünschen für Braut und Bräutigam, einen Rundtanz und einen so genannten Scherentanz. Daraus entstand A Klezmer Karnival, das die dem Klezmer eigene Mischung aus Fröhlichkeit und Melancholie ausgezeichnet wiedergibt. Ein ebenso abwechslungsreiches wie stimmungsvolles Konzertwerk, mit dem Ihr Blasorchester überzeugen wird!
